Athlete. Runner. Marathoner. Are these words you wouldn't exactly use to describe yourself? Do you consider yourself too old or too out of shape to run a marathon? But somewhere deep inside have you always admired the people who could reach down and come up with the mental and physical strength to complete such a daunting and rewarding accomplishment? It doesn't have to be somebody else crossing the finish line. You can be a marathoner. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer is based on the highly successful marathon class offered by the University of Northern Iowa, which was featured in a Runner's World article titled "Marathoning 101." The class has been offered five times over 10 years, and all but one student finished the marathon. That is approximately 200 students -- all first time marathoners and many with absolutely no running background. This book follows the same 16-week, four-day-a-week workout plan. What makes the success rate of this program so much higher than any other? The special emphasis on the psychological aspects of endurance activities. You don't have to love to run -- you don't even have to like it -- but you have to realize that you are capable of more than you have ever thought possible. One participant in the program explained it like this: "I'm doing this for me -- not for others or the time clock. I just feel better when I run, plus it helps me to cope with things in general. The skills we've learned in this class don't apply just to marathoning -- they apply to life! Just like you never know what the next step in a marathon will bring, so too, you never know what will happen next in life. But if you don't keep going, you're never going to find out. By staying relaxed, centered, and positive you handle just about anything that comes your way." This is marathon running for real people, people with jobs and families and obligations outside of running. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer has proven successful for men and women of all ages. Now let it work for you.

Read it, Do it!
By Amazon Customer
Our son gave my wife this book for Christmas. She started reading it and said she was going to run a marathon in June. After reading just the preface I said, "Let's do it". Neither of us had ever considered running a marathon before. I couldn't run around the block. In March we ran a half marathon. In June I attempted a marathon. Felt that I could've finished it, but misunderstood rules and was forced onto half marathon route. She had injured her foot and was unable to run in June. We will be running a marathon in December. I'll be 62 and she is 57. I feel better than I have ever felt in my life. I am a Marathoner.
The book lays out the program week by week, is easy to follow and a great read. Well written.

You will finish!
By Christina
I bought this book after completing some shorter races and wondering if I could ever finish a Marathon. I was inspired after reading "Born to Run" earlier this year. This authors of this book do not let you doubt yourself from week 1. I did what I was told. Put my credit card number in the online registration form for the Pensacola Marathon thinking "what in the world am I doing?" I wanted to see if all of the reviews I read were really people just like me running marathons. I wasn't a non-runner but the longest run I ever did was around 5 miles.
I stand before you today as a marathon finisher, 17 weeks later, as advertised. It was one of the proudest moments of my life and if you really WANT to, you will do it too. And you will have fun doing it. I learned so much about my own body and what it is capable of doing. I'm still in shock two days after my big finish. I'm am a slow/average runner. It took me 5 hours and 33 minutes. I ran 98% of the distance, walking up a vicious hill at mile 18, just kept convincing myself to keep going.
It is also important to note that I did not follow the books training schedule perfectly. No one is perfect and a lot of things can happen in 17 weeks. For me, around week 10, I suffered a syncopal episode along with a concussion and was not allowed to run until my head was cleared and my cardio/neuro workups were good to go, 2 WEEKS! Since I was already registered and knew no matter what, I was going to that starting line, I jumped back in and kept running. The programs longest training run to get you to the finish is 18 miles. MY longest training run was 16 and I still made through that finish line and achieved my first marathon finish. I will do it again and I will probably stick with this training plan as well. If you want to run a marathon and you aren't sure how to go about it, this is the book for you!

Fantastic book - a must get
By S. Shamsuddoha
This is one of the best books I have ever read. I am a reader and I downloaded this book on my kindle. I have already read 18 books so far in 2011 and I read this book twice because I love it and it has been helping me achieve my goal of running marathon.
I am a 48 years old bloke with a history of smoking cigarettes for over 18 years. Sometimes, while studying at the university in NYC I would end up smoking 80 cigarettes (4 packs) of red Marlboro a day and my fingers would become really yellow and stinky. I quit smoking in 1994. I used to drink a lot of beer and did not even walk for over a mile for over 33 years. I have high cholesterol and triglycerides in my body. I lived mostly on McDonald's, FKC and Burger King and mostly drank soda as opposed to water. Couple of years ago when I tried to run, I could not proceed after 100 meters. But still I wanted to run the marathon. I followed the book and transformed myself into a different person now. I eat mostly raw food (veggies of course) and very little meat and fish, no soda, no juice, no chocolate, no KFC and no fish n chips etc. I love my food and enjoy every bit of it.
I bought the book from Amazon and with enthusiasm started to read it and made notes on my Kindle and followed it through. After following the book for few weeks, now I can say that I can run 10KM (6 miles) almost without any effort. If I do not run, I don't feel good. I have already signed up for Wellington Harbor Capital 10 KM run next month followed by Adidas Auckland Marathon at the end of October, 2011 and I now have 100% confidence that I can do that. I am planning to run for NYC Marathon next year if my name gets picked up by the lottery.
The books is a fantastic mental and physical education guide. It talks about Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs and puts everything into perspective. I have a young family with my wife and three of my children. I am busy and I am the only bread earner for the family. I have a full-time job, I walk, I dance social dancing (tango), I play both indoor and outdoor games, I cook and clean, I take violin, piano and guitar lessons with my children so that they are encouraged to learn alongside, I am a book worm and read books everyday. I practice my music everyday for at least half an hour for each instrument. I am spiritual and spend few hours each week reading and meditating. But I still make time for my run. The book helped me transform myself into a new and healthy me.
I have tendonitis and do have knee pains. But I did not give up. It really "does not matter" as long as I run. My doctors gave up on my running and I did not. Now my cholesterol level is better and I feel 20-years younger than I actually am. My doctors are surprised.
If anyone is interested to run marathon, I would highly recommend this book. If I can do, anyone can and should be able to do.
Good luck.
