Hirano uncovers a logic of politics within Edo’s cultural works that was extremely potent in exposing contradictions between the formal structure of the Tokugawa world and its rapidly changing realities. He goes on to look at the effects of this logic, examining policies enacted during the next era—the Meiji period—that mark a drastic reconfiguration of power and a new politics toward ordinary people under modernizing Japan. Japan expressed through pop culture

I completed a course with Professor Hirano recently, as a Senior Scholar at UCLA, and asked him to sign this book for my grandson, who is captivated by all things Japanese. My grandson's interest was the reason I took the course. I am now fascinated by a culture that I thought I knew about but I was sooo wrong. This book is fascinating from historical, psychological and political perspectives. And my vocabulary as benefited as well.
