Definitive and Thorough Retelling of the Pearl Harbor Attack, With Stunning Photography

My husband is a retired Naval officer and a history buff, so I gave him this book for Christmas and he just couldn't put it down until he read every page and looked at every picture. He still hasn't stopped talking about what he learned from this book. He then convinced me to read it. I've been using this line of workbooks for my kids for a couple of years now. I like that the workbooks each focus on a different skill, and the lessons aren't carbon copies of each other. The reading passages come in many different formats, from stories to letters to advertisements and even some comic strips.

great old time cozies

I greatly enjoyed this book. I love the older short mystery stories where the detective is a gentleman - there are no gun fights, profanity or pornography. Malcolm Sage is just quirky enough to interest me . I wish there were more stories but from what I can ascertain this is it. Comparable to Max Carrados, Martin Hewitt, Dr. Thorndyke.

A nearly-unremembered fiction detective worth discovering

In "Malcolm Sage, Detective," the author describes a series of cases taken up by a character introduced earlier in the same author's comedic novel "John Dene of Toronto: A Comedy of Whitehall." In the follow-on book, the appropriately named Mr. Sage is described as a slightly eccentric character who heads a small private detective agency and works much in the Sherlock Holmes manner and has an even wider general knowledge and deeper sense of humanity than Holmes did. The mysteries described and their solutions are generally satisfying and they are usually spiced by a few dashes of humor associated with the personalities of several of his staff. As often occurs in books of this period, there are a few instances of racial or ethnic slurs that add nothing to the stories and grate (or should grate) on modern readers' sensibilities. At least they are not uttered by Mr. Sage himself. Also somewhat annoying is the almost constant smoking that goes on during every conceivable opportunity --including a murder-- by nearly every character. It would be refreshing to encounter a non-smoking detective or anyone who would refuse a cigar or cigarette but perhaps no author dared to go too far from the Sherlock Holmes' story model. In any case, the stories themselves are quite enjoyable. Unfortunately there do not seem to have been any more published.

Collection of Malcolm Sage Stories

English author Herbert George Jenkins (1876-1923) spent several years as a journalist and then worked for the publishing company The Bodley Head, before founding Herbert Jenkins Ltd., which published many of P. G. Wodehouse's novels. His most popular fictional creation was the Cockney Mr. Joseph Bindle, who first appeared in a humorous novel in 1916.

Jenkins also wrote a number of short stories about Detective Malcolm Sage, which were collected into one book in 1921 and titled "Malcolm Sage: Detective." The stories feature Sage, with his bald, conical head, "determined" jaw, and protruding ears, who worked first as an accountant, but after uncovering shady practices at high levels of the British civil service, he was appointed to the mysterious "Department Z." After the end of the First World War, his old chief from division Z (whose life Sage once saved) set Sage up in his own private detective agency.

Sage has been compared to Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes for his style of detective work, with his methods fairly high tech for the time, using such newfangled tools as telephones, photography, and medical evidence. However, as the detective himself notes, he is often more interested in setting traps for the villain than in detecting his original crime. Jenkins also doesn't necessarily play fair with the reader, introducing clues at the end that weren't shown during the story.

I have to agree with Mike Grost at GA Detection who noted that the techniques and traps Sage uses often involve considerable social comedy. Although Sage is also a bit on the haughty side, his staff of a secretary, an assistant, a chauffeur and an office boy (himself a devout reader of detective fiction) also provide comic foil to Sage's overbearing attitude.

Japan expressed through pop culture

I completed a course with Professor Hirano recently, as a Senior Scholar at UCLA, and asked him to sign this book for my grandson, who is captivated by all things Japanese. My grandson's interest was the reason I took the course. I am now fascinated by a culture that I thought I knew about but I was sooo wrong. This book is fascinating from historical, psychological and political perspectives. And my vocabulary as benefited as well.

Wordy For What It Says, But Great Examples and Relevant Topics For the Future Healthcare Professional To Consider!

This was a required textbook for a "Health and Culture" class I recently took. It was an easy read and I really liked the real-world examples outlined in the book, but I felt the core messages could be largely summed up in far fewer words:

1) "Culture" can encompass almost anything and each person's interpretation of their own relative "culture" develops based on a number of factors, including age, gender, geographic location, financial status, social exposures, parental upbringing, national and global social characteristics, etc. Essentially, every person's "culture" is unique and people within common cultures don't necessarily view those cultures the same way.
2) The terms "health" and "illness" can mean something different for everyone. To some, an illness is only a condition which does not go away. To others, it can be anything that inhibits a person's maximal performance, even in the short term. The definitions of what constitutes "health" are even more varied!
3) Cultures can exist at the individual, familial, community, national and global levels and even integrated systems, such as health care, can maintain their own unique "culture" which presents both benefits and challenges whenever it comes into contact with one of the previously mentioned levels of "culture".
4) Barriers to healthcare can be physical or cultural or even a combination of both, such as access, affordability, language or ethical differences.
5) To overcome the majority of barriers and improve overall patient care moving forward, healthcare and its practitioners need to better understand points 1-4!

In essence, the author asks those going into healthcare to become "culturally competent" and consider the person, their system of beliefs and any barriers posed by their status in society when applying care related to heath and to understand that even two persons or groups existing in a similar environment can still vary greatly in what they need to be "healthy".

Of course, it takes the author nearly 200 pages to say as much, but it does get you thinking about how we can address such differences in the real world.

I wouldn't go out of my way to buy and read this book again if it wasn't required for my class, but I did take away some solid perspectives concerning cultural sensitivity that will likely benefit me when I am dealing with people and health issues in my own community.

About the Author
Nick Adams emigrated to Canada from the UK in 1977 to work for the Ontario government as an archaeologist. He soon fell in love with Canada's north and, for the past few years, has been exploring it by canoe and on his beloved 1970's Moto Guzzi motorcycles. From time to time, he returns to the UK to 'get a breath of Britain' by hiking some of its many long-distance footpaths and riding around visiting friends and relatives on Royal Enfields. Writing about his trips and sharing them with others doubles the pleasure. He is a regular contributor to 'RealClassic' magazine and frequently posts to on-line motorcycle forums.

The romance of the open road

British-born Nick followed his heart to the New World several decades ago, established a career in archaeology, and then did the whole family thing. He never lost a love of motorcycling on rattling old clunks through windswept, wide open terrain which he developed back in his youth in Blighty. In later life, he made time and devoted resources to rediscover the exquisite loneliness of the long-distance rider.

These compiled episodes tell some of the stories of his travels. Nick’s a natural storyteller. He has a real gift for transporting you to the icy wilds of northern Canada, where immense lakes look more like inland oceans and the horizon hides behind ancient forests. Nick takes an old bike, one which doesn’t have a particularly brilliant reputation for reliability, and proves that you can motor many thousands of miles on a 1972 Guzzi Eldorado, without back-up, breakdown cover or even a mobile phone signal. Sometimes his routes are paved or tarmac surfaced. Often they’re not.
The story starts with a bit of history, about Nick’s early motorcycling years which will feel familiar to many men of a certain age. It’s not just background; these formative years have a direct relevance to recent events. Nick’s teenage experience with a the Red Panther which expired in the rain comes back to haunt him when his Guzzi likewise loses its sparks in heavy traffic – and in both occasions a brush with the law is the result…
Nick has a gift for dragging you into the ride. This is less like a travelogue and more like sharing the ride. You could, if you were truly keen, recreate his routes by following the short road notations or detailed maps, but I preferred to instead let the rhythm of his writing recreate the rumble of the road.
Each ride is presented in a self-contained chapter, so this is an easy book to read in half-hour sessions. There is a bit of repetition (especially when it comes to Nick’s firm grip on the French language), but every journey has a distinct character – becoming more adventurous as Nick’s confidence in the bike and his stamina grows. He describes some situations common to many motorcycle travellers: pressing on past what looked like a busy hotel, only to end up in a dump of a motel a hundred miles later, exhausted. Refusing the stop (for anything!) on the home straight, and finishing a 22 hour trek in a state of wired, hyper-real concentration. Worrying about that rattle. Spending half the time with your head inclined towards the engine…
More precious are the moments I’ve never experienced, beautifully described. Pulling up by the side of the road and hanging a hammock to sleep under the stars. Being woken by the full moon (I truly do relate to that) and rather than restlessly fretting, getting back in the saddle to ride a few hundred miles before breakfast, dimply lit by the glow of 40 year old Italian electrics. And even in the genuine, honest to goodness middle of nowhere, Nick encounters that essential motorcycling truth. He meets strangers and they part as friends.

Criticisms? A good editor would’ve tidied up the few grammatical and punctuation glitches, but they rarely spoil the flow. Bonuses? The photos of the deserted roads, the sparsely-visited rest stops and the sheer scale of the landscape.

Nick Adams obviously has a "thing" about Moto Guzzi motorcycles which is instantly recognisable to those of us who share the same "thing". His tales of his rides to the north of Canada on these middle aged bikes paint, in everyday prose, vivid images of roads and scenery, people and places which some of us have never seen and likely, never will. I found myself reading his "get you home" running repairs, using whatever is at hand, and remembering my own similar efforts while riding similar age, and older, motorcycles. Nick made me feel as though I was right there, riding with him.
This is, by no means, a big read at 105 pages but there is enough packed into those pages to ensure that I will be back again and again as, I suspect, will most readers. Well done, Sir. More please!

Old Guy, Old Bike, Bad Roads, Great Stories

I'm loving this.

I've been following Nick's adventures on the Wild Guzzi board for a number of years and this collection of his (mis-)adventures is a great read. Old guy, old bike, back roads miles from anywhere - what could go wrong?

This is not your Charlie and Ewen story, all polished with a full support team following them. No, this is one man and his trips on his beloved Moto Guzzis out and around Canada.

If you've ridden anywhere off the beaten track by yourself, you can relate to Nick's stories. Easy to read, with humor and insight.

Highly recommended.

Hybrid Knowledge in the Early East India Company World presents a new interpretation of the development of the English East India Company between 1660 and 1720. The book explores the connections between scholarship, patronage, diplomacy, trade, and colonial settlement in the early modern world. Links of patronage between cosmopolitan writers and collectors and scholars associated with the Royal Society of London and the universities are investigated. Winterbottom shows how innovative works of scholarship – covering natural history, ethnography, theology, linguistics, medicine, and agriculture - were created amid multi-directional struggles for supremacy in Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic. The role of non-elite actors including slaves in transferring knowledge and skills between settlements is explored in detail.

About the Author

Anna Winterbottom is British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Sussex, UK. She is co-editor of The East India Company and the Natural World and has published several journal articles and book chapters on topics related to the history of science and medicine, the Indian Ocean region, and colonial history.
