About the Author
Rick Polad teaches Earth Science and volunteers with the Coast Guard Auxiliary on Lake Michigan. For over a decade, Rick has given editorial assistance to award-winning photographer Bruce Roberts and historian/author Cheryl Shelton-Roberts on several of their maritime-themed publications including North Carolina Lighthouses: Stories of History and Hope, and the third edition of American Lighthouses: A Comprehensive Guide to Exploring Our National Coastal Treasures. Rick also edited the English version of Living With Nuclei, the memoirs of Japanese physicist, Motoharu Kimura. This is the second Spencer Manning mystery. The third is underway.

A captivating mystery!

I read a lot of mysteries and this is one of the best I have had the pleasure of reading in the last several years. Spencer Manning, doing a favor for a public defender, gets into a bit of trouble trying to keep a lady of the night out of trouble and, in doing so solves two parallel crimes. The two cases are expertly woven together in a manner that kept me guessing but avoided getting too tangled in the weeds. This is a well-written book that I hated to have to put down and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one Mr. Polad writes.

Rick Polad did another awesome job on his second book in the series

Rick Polad did another awesome job on his second book in the series. Rick's descriptive writing style makes you feel like you are there with Spencer as it happens. I enjoyed both books so far, But I have to say that this one was my favorite. On to book three! :)

This one is better than the first!

Finally- it was a very long wait for Rick Polad's 2nd Spencer Manning mystery - Dark Alleys. Rick's first book, Change of Address, had raised my standards for mystery novels, so I expected at least as much excitement, humor, warmth, plot twists, and Chicago locale. As I snuggled down and read Dark Alleys, I found that Rick had raised the bar of excellence once again. Laura is intriguing, Charles is likeable at first, and Amanda is na�ve. The streets and alleys of Chicago are a character in themselves, and even Spencer is affected by them. Each chapter packs a punch as the characters and clues move around in Rubric's cube fashion toward a surprising conclusion. Once again, thank you, Rick, for a terrific book that I will read again and again. Now, how long do I have to wait for Dusty Roads?
