"A brilliant and innovative take on an issue close to the hearts and minds of families who have one foot planted firmly on both sides of the border. It is a deportation story in reverse: a bold re-envisioning with unexpected consequences, mystery, and insight."--Tim Z. Hernandez, author of Maana Means Heaven

After Wopper Barraza's fourth drunk driving violation, the judge orders his immediate deportation. "But I haven't been there since I was a little kid," says Wopper, whose parents brought him to California when he was three years old. Now he has to move back to Michoacn. When he learns that his longtime girlfriend is pregnant, the future looks even more uncertain. Wopper's story unfolds as life in a rural village takes him in new and unexpected directions.

This immigrant saga in reverse is a story of young people who must live with the reality of their parents' dream. We know this story from the headlines, but up to now it has been unexplored literary territory.

Review

"Montoya flips the familiar tale of northbound immigration on its head."
--Los Angeles Magazine

"Montoya manages to balance humor with pathos as he challenges our views on immigration, gender roles, and politics. This is an engaging, candid novel that establishes Montoya's position as one of our more eloquent social commentators."
--Los Angeles Review of Books

"[An] affecting new novel about the immigrant experience."
--Tucson Weekly

"Montoya's humorous yet moving critique of the United States' deportation policies avoids easy depictions of good and bad. The book features a decidedly complicated anti-hero whose journey sheds light on the lives of those who are affected when a person disappears from either side of the border."
--BuzzFeed

"A delightful, multidimensional foray into the immigration experience from both sides of the Mexican-American border."
--NewPages

Brilliant Must-Read
By B&G
What a fantastic premise for a novel, and what a mature piece of work this tragicomedy is. I can see this work becoming a classic text in schools and colleges throughout the Americas.

Read it for the pleasure of getting to know the painstakingly well-developed main character (Whopper) and his intriguing female counterpart (Mija). Watching Whopper come of age and hearing the voices of those close to him is surprisingly pleasurable. The funniest part of the novel is following Whopper at the height of his powers as the Licenciado, the municipal representative, of a tiny rancho in Michoacan. The most unresolved part is the novel's engagement with female sexuality in the rancho. And the author doesn't hesitate to ask powerful questions about the quality of the dreams available to the children of immigrants. These philosophical questions are effectively woven into the novel's confident, satisfying, and commanding story-telling.

Important fiction...
By Phillip Victor
Mr. Montoya's second novel offers a glimpse of the transformative in life--in spite of our efforts to fight it off. Descriptively rich yet interactively minimalist, it is what isn't said that drives this bittersweet tale. Like pieces of marble being chipped away from a shapeless slab, our protagonist, equally shapeless and inert, develops a character etched by the reality of experience and time. That we are more willing and able to understand him is a good thing, the stuff of serious and enduring fiction, and I'm guessing what Mr. Montoya is about. Anybody giving this book a serious read will not only appreciate its craft, but will be a little changed by it as well.

By Laura Corona
I liked "The Deportation of Wopper Barraza" by Maceo Montoya because I can relate to the immigration mentioned in the novel since I am Latina myself. The novel depicted realistic conflicts that can actually happen to anyone, and it shows the struggles that any Latino can go through. I was left with suspense at the end of every chapter, and I loved how the novel is narrated by all the different characters. I hope to read a novel like this again because I get to relate and imagine what I would do if I was in that situation

Where are they?
By Amazon Customer
Is Lord Lucan still alive? What happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste? Where is Boudicca buried? In this handsomely illustrated volume the author describes some of the great and not so great missing people, places and things of history. Each entry is short and the author describes the mystery and proposed solutions. Except to rule out the unlikiest solutions, Mr. Smith generally does not try to solve the mysteries. Nevertheless, this is an entertaining book that may encourage you to look for more detailed accounts of some of the missing.

Please Read This
By msmforgood
This read changed my life. I hadn't realized how off track I was in my understanding of what it meant to truly need to give everything up to God. So often I had stuggled with my own deamons only to pick myself back up and trudge on, never realizing that I had to surrender and let God lead me. We have weakness, not so we can learn to overcome them, but rather so we can learn to be humble, to learn to avoid judgement of others in their weaknesses, and to come to a clear and complete understanding of what it means to need a Savior. God bless you Phil S. for sharing your story with us.

A Remarkable Heartfelt Story that will bring you Incredible HOPE! A MUST read for EVERYONE....whether you are addicted or not.
By niknak
This book has brought so much HOPE to our family who struggles with addiction. It helps us all realize that addiction is indeed a family disease and we are all affected by it. It is perfect for those who don't quite understand the addicted and takes us inside their life, mind and spirit so we can better understand their disease. It helps us have more compassion toward the addicted because they are good people (our brothers, sisters, children, parents and friends)...who have families, are loved by others and who are fighting such a hard fight in life. Most importantly it brings a "Perfect Hope" to families and addicts. There is a way to break free from the chains of addiction and to find true happiness in our lives!

This book will touch your hearts. It will inspire, encourage, uplift, comfort and bring peace to all who read it. I admire Phil so much for all he went through and for never giving up in order to find happiness even throughout his darkest trials. He is such a remarkable example of this and is truly a good, GOOD man. I love this quote in his book: "The good man--no matter how bad he is, how low he has sunk--is the man who starts coming up. The bad man is the man who, no matter how high he has reached in his goodness and morality, begins to come down." This book will make you look deep inside yourself and decide what kind of person you want to be and how you will want to help those around you. It will make you NEVER GIVE UP so that you can find your own happiness. We are all deserving of it!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE everything about what this book teaches us and will recommend it to everyone I know.

This book gave us HOPE, as well as giving hope to our loved one. We continue to buy copies and give them away to our friends. We have given away 45 copies so far and we continue to give them away. Very seldom do you find a book that is a life changer, but this one was for us. Thank you Phil for telling us your story.

Matrix Population Models, Second Edition, is a comprehensive treatment of matrix population models and their applications in ecology and demography. It begins with simple cases, presented in detail so that beginning students can learn how to use these powerful models. It goes on to cover advanced topics in stochastic and nonlinear models. Analytical methods and theoretical issues are illustrated with empirical examples throughout. The decade since the publication of the First Edition of this book has seen enormous progress in the theory and application of matrix population models. The new edition includes greatly expanded treatment of stochastic and density-dependent models, sensitivity analysis, and statistical inference, and new chapters on parameter estimation, structured population models, demographic stochasticity, and applications of matrix models in conservation biology. Matrix Population Models, Second Edition, is an indispensable reference for graduate students and researchers in ecology, population biology, conservation biology, and human demography.

a classic - worth the wait
By Evan G Cooch
As a graduate student many years ago, I bought the last shelf copy of the first edition to Caswell's text on matrix population models for our bookstore. After 10+ years of using the book, both in research, and teaching, I'm glad I did. The 2nd edition is a lucid and masterful update, with several nice touches that should be appreciated by both newcomers and experienced modelers. In particular, some of the more turgid text from the first edition has been clarified, and expanded, and several new very important chapters have been added (yes, using branching process theory you can handle demographic stochasticity with matrix models). A superb book, made even better by the inclusion (at last!) of some basic MATLAB code for some of the more esoteric calculations. My only complaint (related perhaps to the 'code') is that the many good 'worked examples' are not treated more fully. I'd have liked to have seen the actual matrices involved, or some further detail, in some cases, rather than a figure or table summarizing the results. However, a minor complaint - perhaps easily solved by a companion website with code for each example in the book 9something I'm probably going to do on my own, but should be standard these days for any technical text).

Clear and accessible introduction to population modeling
By Carlo Maley
There is often a false dichotomy drawn between differential (or difference) equation models of populations and agent-based (artificial life, individual-based, configuration) models. Agent-based models can represent more of the complexity of biological systems at the expense of analytical tractability. Matrix population models form a bridge between the two approaches.
Caswell shows how you can elaborate differential equation models to represent much of the population structure and characteristics of interest within a population. His descriptions are clear and easily accessible to biologists as well as people from the more quantitative fields of science.
The new edition of this book is due out in April 2000. I am looking forward to it.
