Content rich, editing poor

Disappointing not in terms of content but in poor editing which results in needless repetition. The topic is one worth reading about, the research is sound and referenced, but the variable quality of some passages can distract an interested reader. The section on Simpson alone seemed to raise the same points with a frequency which made me wonder if my kindle was looping.

As an aside: in order to convince the reader that the thinking in the book is current, references to the common law principle of the "prudent man rule" in relation to fiduciary duties should have been referred to as "prudent investor rule."

This is not nit-picking but the above are an example of how a book should aim to be precise and succinct rather than meet a 240-odd page target (I am reading the kindle version but assume that it is within the typical range for most books).

Nevertheless, I plan to trudge onwards and complete the book in order to glean the insights since newer books on value investors are a rarity and help to further form a picture of names we consider synonymous with the approach and perhaps even to improve our own strategy on longer term wealth creation.

It's a great book. It is somewhat repetitive

It's a great book. It is somewhat repetitive. I seem to read the same quotes multiple times throughout the book.

The profiles are inspiring and informative. A few that I had not heard of. A well read investor will know most of the investors profiled in this book.But putting them together and focussing on the concentration in their respective styles is a new twist.

Definitely worth at read!

From a student perspective, avoid this book if possible

One of the worst, if not the worst, textbooks I have ever had to use. This may be a valuable reference for a practicing engineer who already has a good familiarity with the topics covered and wants to review theory. However, if one is looking to use this book as a guide to LEARN the topic of Advanced Soil Mechanics it is wholly inadequate. I do not believe there is a single example in the entire book that shows how the concepts discussed in the text can actually be applied. Yet the practice problems offered are some of the most perplexing and intentionally deceptive questions I have come across in my engineering curriculum, which has included several prior Geotechnical Engineering courses, so it is not as though I have no experience with soil mechanics. This discrepancy makes it quite hard to test your knowledge and know which errors are due to a misunderstanding of the concepts or due to making different initial assumptions or due to (as my professor suggested) the book sometimes making errors. Once again, this is not a desirable trait to have for a source of information being relied upon to learn a topic. If looking for an alternative, I have heard good things about the Das soil mechanics textbook, although I only have firsthand experience with Das's foundation engineering textbooks, which are great.

Excellent - There are ERRORS though

Since Wiley does not (apparently) publish errata for this book, I figured I'd post this here; it may be some help to some frustrated grad student (like me).

On pg 293, top of the first column, an equation for the change in horizontal stress is given (for Boussineq conditions). The first subtraction operator should be an addition operator and the first addition operator should be a subtraction operator. This modification renders a reasonable result in keeping with results from Poulos and Davis (1974).

Hope that spares you a couple hours of hair-tearing.

Invaluable grace-filled translation of a key text

Together with Dudjom Rinpoche's history of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism this book by Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche is an essential source for information on the lineages of the Dzogchen transmission from Garab Dorje to the present. Since those lineages are so widespread, of necessity Nyoshul Khenpo has concentrated on his own, which derives from Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa to Jigme Gyalwai Nyugu and thence through his successors, especially Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo and Patrul Rinpoche. The lineages which come through those two are by far the most often met with in the West.

For example, if one were a student of the matchless Rigdzin Trinley Ozer (Lama Gonpo Tsedan), who was Panchen Vimalamitra in person, through Nyoshul Khen's book one can easily trace his lineage of transmission through his root teacher, Patrul Rinpoche of Tso, to Adzom Drukpa, to Khyentse Wango, and so forth all the way back to Garab Dorje, the source of the teachings.

Filled with inspiring biographies of innumerable great teachers, "A Marvelous Garland" also, for the discerning, is an important book showing forth the essence of the Dzogpa Chenpo itself, through the lives of the Lineage Holders, and in many cases their words and poetry.

Admirably translated by Lochen Chokyi Nyima (Lama Richard Barron), this book is a labor of love. I only have one teeny criticism: there is no glossary to make clear exactly what certain extremely important Tibetan words are being translated. And example of this (which I found frustrating) is his use of the terms "utter lucidity" and "timeless awareness". Are they the same? Subtly distinct from one another? Rigpa? Yeshe? Dzogpa Chenpo? I don't know. If there had been a short glossary the "Marvelous Garland" would have been perfect.

But then, this is just my quibbling and doesn't mean much in the face of this great and sublime work. I've met Chokyi Nyima. He very kindly and for gratis translated a unique Sakyapa text which had fallen into my hands (briefly, for I passed it on to someone who could care for it better than I). For that help alone I am eternally grateful to him. But much, much more, all students of the Dzogpa Chenpo in the future will be grateful for the work of Nyoshul Khen and his translator for making this "Marvelous Garland" available to us pygmies who have the temerity to attempt to stand on the shoulders of giants.

Sharpening The Warrior’s Edge – The Psychology & Science Of Training by Bruce K. Siddle is a book that takes a scalpel and dissects the many deep aspects of the psychological process when coupled with high stress survival situations.

Siddle does a phenomenal job of bringing forth a very systematic approach into the many crevices that encompass the totality of a warrior mindset. The author also delves into the oft-overlooked spiritual component that many other authors overlook in this field.

Although relatively complex in its breath and scope, the book actually is a quick read. That’s always a plus.

The way the author distills potentially intricate subjects such as survival mindset, implementing survival research, survival reaction time, the neural basis of survival motor programs and condenses them to bite-sized chunks makes the book that much easier to read.

Anyone from any walk of life could pick this book up and be able to garner useful information proportional to the motivation driving them.

Personally, the stress management, and breath control management information and discussions were the most useful for me, but your millage may vary.

All the information discussed is appreciated because it all forms various components of a robust methodology which can be employed in potential combat/survival scenarios of all types. Each of those areas of an individual’s repertoire discussed by the author can mean the difference between life and death, and to have that information discussed objectively put together for individuals is something that is beyond priceless.

Comprehensive approach to survival skill training

I'm not sure what book the "two-star" reviewer read or the scope and depth of those "15 years" of experience. I was a trainer for 21 of my 31 years in law enforcement and for that past 10 years since retirement as a consultant and I find this book very useful. I only wish I'd had something like this 35 years ago.

This is as succinct, understandable and straightforward an explanation as I have seen of survival stress, motor skill and response. Anyone with a background or interest in police firearms training, incident analysis or situation-response training should find this book relevant and will recognize much of this, as I like to say about myself, but "never knew what to call it before."

This is not a book for cowboys or wannabes. There are no quickie "isms" here, but I recommend it to serious police trainers.

Captivating and Erotic

Okay, I definitely wasn't expecting this book. Not in a bad way at all. I actually found this book riveting with a sense of a historical romance with mystery within. I loved every single moment of this book and as Dominic races against time to win back the love of his wife.

His sunny wife is slowly disappearing within herself as the darkness consumes her. Will she be able overcome it or will it be the end of her?

The book had a great storyline. However, it was starting to get a bit repetitive and it starts to get boring. It was an amazing book ultimately but as it neared its end, it met its end. I liked the thought process that went into this book and the clever ideas. Like I said, I really liked how fast she was changed after falling into the pits of darkness because of the fact that this was a fast-paced book.

However, it could have been a lot better when it came down to the ending.

This was the first book that I ever read by Marina and it surely won't be the last because if all of her books are like this, I'm sure the endings will slowly get better. Right?

One can only dream.

Anyways, this book hints at BDSM and so if you're squeamish, get over it and read this book. It was fast, dark, and dirty. I liked it. >insert evil smiling face here< But hey, I think that I will go ahead and rate this a good 4 out of 5 stars.

WHEN DARKNESS FALLS
This story had me gripped right from the start, and I found the concept both fresh and thought provoking. Although I’ve read many novels about souls that are reborn, none have really shown how romantic love that lasts through time can create so much pain and distress as well as the bliss of the reunion. The characters are all very well drawn and the writing is extremely good. I was nearly in tears at the end, and I hope that there’s a sequel as it seems to me that Abigail believes Rufus will come back to her, but I – or she – may be mistaken. The biggest sadness in the book is that Abigail’s husband is such a decent and loving man, and the way he’s treated by Abigail, whose obsession is so great that she can’t control herself, means you really feel his hurt. I slightly disagree with people who would have preferred him to be a bad husband, because for me the impact of the story was the way it showed that bad things happen to good people, and both Abigail and her husband are good people. She struggles to cope with the overpowering love between her and the returned Rufus, and Dominic is no different from any husband fighting to keep his wife’s love except for the fact that he doesn’t understand why she’s changed. Is the end a new beginning for the married couple, as Dominic hopes, or not? That’s a question I’d really like answered, but thanks to Marina Anderson for a very different and at times heart-stopping book.

The blurb to this was great. The plot was awesome. The story not so much.
Not only was it sometimes confusing and riddled with grammatical errors, I'm the first to admit I'm horrible at grammar so when I notice it's really bad, but at times it contradicted itself.
" she clearly had very old fashioned parents.'
'I don't know. They were both dead before I met her,' replied Dominic. "They're living in Spain now, but they write regularly and Abby writes back.' "
That paragraph right there is a great example. There were to many to really point them out but that one really stuck in my head.
While the storyline was interesting I didn't connect to any of the characters. I believe it's because they came off as fake. Nothing they did was believable and especially not the way they spoke.
