Eerily prescient; but don't expect fast pace

An amazing novel. Anyone who starts questioning why they're reading it, during the first few chapters (as I did), my advice is to stick with it. There's too much here that needs to be heard. Miller combines futurism, history, faith, science, cynicism, sarcasm, allegory ... to warn us, from his vantage point of a half-century ago, about a future some now see on the distant horizon. And then it will be repeated all over again. The book is downright scary in that respect.

Keep in mind that Miller was writing in the 1940s and 1950s. Among other things, he has characters argue or mull over intelligent design, euthanasia, "removable" conscience, politicians placating their country's "patriotic opinionated rabble," the line between church and state, and the destruction and rise of civilizations over millennia. Two examples of some phrases that jumped out at me:
- When scholar Thon Taddeo questions how a great civilization could destroy itself, the answer from the monsignor is "Perhaps ... by being materially great and materially wise, and nothing else."
- Brother Joshua, about to colonize space in order to save shreds of civilization as his current world implodes, thinks that, "the closer men come to perfecting for themselves a paradise, the more impatient they seemed to become with it, and with themselves as well." Joshua thinks that a dark world can yearn and hope, but a world "bright with reason and riches" begins to "sense the narrowness of the needle's eye," and the realization rankles.

My one complaint is that Miller uses way too many Latin phrases that I didn't take time to look up the first time through. (And I'm Catholic and even studied Latin in high school.) I will re-read this book with a dictionary at hand in order to mine even more from its depths.

A True American Masterpiece

A True American Masterpiece

This book kept being drawn to my attention until I finally purchased it, drawn in to a certain extent by the stunningly beautiful cover art of the Eos/HarperCollins edition. I would be interested in seeing more work by John Picacio (the cover artist). The introduction was mixed, and I was not sure what to expect, but was sold almost instantly once into the actual novel. The three-part structure is used to great effect, and each parcel of the overall story has its own merits. Unless I am mistaken, A Canticle for Liebowitz was Miller Jr.’s first and only novel, not counting the posthumously published sequel finished by Terry Bisson, St. Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman (1997), which is very firmly on my to-read list. Intriguingly, it seems that after writing A Canticle for Leibowitz, Miller Jr. released no further work. What a shame! If all first novels could be this powerful!

Miller Jr.’s religiously motivated philosophy is made fairly clear throughout the work, and will not be to everyone’s taste, but it was to mine. I became very attached to many of the characters and especially to the Abbey, a bastion of pre-disaster knowledge that is being safeguarded for future generations against the twin monstrosities of barbarian military might and soulless scientific scholarship. The author destroys arguments for euthanasia in a supremely satisfying sequence in the third part; I metaphorically stood up and clapped.

The back cover claims that the work is “seriously funny, stunning, and tragic, eternally fresh, imaginative, and altogether remarkable”. Now, back-cover copy is often wont to gush, sometimes in disturbing excess of praise for hellaciously untalented work, but in this case, the back cover has nailed it. This book is one of the finest pieces of twentieth-century American literature, let alone speculative science fiction. Do yourself a favor and give it a read.

60 Years Old and Still a Great Read

A friend asked about SCI/FI books to read and this was one of the first I thought of to recommend.

After that I thought it was time to reacquaint myself with this Classic and memorable Book. Not Sorry I did!

This book was one of my first ventures into Science Fiction almost 40 years ago and it has been a story line in my thoughts on and off during that time.

I remembered the plot line and the note with Pastrami, Kraut and Bagels very vividly.

But I had forgotten the actual word smithing that was the heart of the Book iIt was something that has been lacking in many of the current publications.

It took a mastery of words and intellect to craft this Classic, Long Lasting, Intelligent and a Compellation that still over 55 years later still holds value and relevance.

Cold war Iconology and the loss of related history still holds true in a different form but it still can be interpreted and applied in todays world of threat and insecurity.

It is a Compelling and Great Read and a book that should be included in a true SCI/FI aficionado's Library.

About the Author
Mark P. Jones is the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy's Fellow in Political Science, the Joseph D. Jamail Chair in Latin American Studies, and a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Rice University. His articles have appeared in publications such as the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Texas Monthly, The Hill, and the Texas Tribune. Jones is among the state's most quoted commentators on Texas politics in the state and national media, and his research on the Texas legislature is widely cited by media outlets and political campaigns. Jones received his B.A. from Tulane University and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

William Earl Maxwell is a professor emeritus at San Antonio College, where he has taught courses in U.S. and Texas government since 1971. Throughout his career Maxwell has focused on innovative teaching techniques and improving the teaching and learning environments for students. As part of that effort, in 1975 Maxwell co-authored UNDERSTANDING TEXAS POLITICS, his first text on Texas government. He also co-authored such texts as POLITICS IN TEXAS and THE CHALLENGE OF TEXAS POLITICS: TEXT WITH READINGS. He completed his undergraduate and graduate work at Sam Houston State University.

Ernest Crain did his graduate work at the University of Texas at Austin, spent 35 years teaching Texas government at San Antonio College, and now lives in Montgomery County, Texas. Crain has co-authored UNDERSTANDING TEXAS POLITICS, POLITICS IN TEXAS: AN INTRODUCTION TO TEXAS POLITICS, THE CHALLENGE OF TEXAS POLITICS: TEXT WITH READINGS, AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS TODAY: TEXAS EDITION, and TEXAS POLITICS TODAY. His special areas of interest include party competition, comparative state politics, and Texas public policy.

M. Lynn Davis is professor of Government at El Paso Community College, where she has served as Blackboard Trainer and Mentor, Faculty Senator, Government Discipline Coordinator and has served on numerous faculty committees. Davis has a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Texas at El Paso majoring in both Organizational Behavior and Political Science. She is a very active community volunteer, grant writer, and has consulted for and participated in many political campaigns. Her published articles range in topics from the current political environment to the viability of primaries and caucuses in today's election processes.

Christopher Wlezien is Hogg Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. He previously taught at Oxford University, the University of Houston, and Temple University, after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1989. Over the years, Wlezien has published widely on elections, public opinion, and public policy, and his books include DEGREES OF DEMOCRACY, WHO GETS REPRESENTED? AND THE TIMELINE OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. He has founded a journal, served on numerous editorial boards, established different institutes, advised governments and other organizations, held visiting positions at many universities around the world, received various research grants, and won a number of awards for his research and teaching.

Ziegler is a therapist specializing in humanistic and spiritual therapy, Freie Universitat, Berlin. He studied psychology, political science, theater and religious studies at the University. Mirror of the Soul is a brilliant and useful book

Gerd Ziegler is indeed a genius in his ability to distill the dense symbolism of the Crowley Tarot into practical messages about our inner state. He takes a Jungian approach, examining the symbolism of the cards and integrating it with astrology and the Quabbalah (both of which were strong influences in the historical development of the Tarot). His coverage of each card ends with practical information about how to apply the messages of the symbols in our own lives. This is not a scholarly treatise that would satisfy a serious student of the Tarot, and it doesn't try to be. There are many other academically-oriented books on the Crowley Tarot, including works by Crowley himself. These works are profoundly complex, and not for the faint of heart.
Gerd's book is meant to be used in your daily life. I am replacing a copy that has literally fallen apart with use, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to use the Crowley Tarot as a source of wisdom and guidance. I have been amazed at what a wise, accurate and unerring teacher the Crowley deck and Gerd's wonderful guide have been for me in my own life.

Excellent book to start & for using Thoth for Divination

This book is an excellent companion to the Thoth Tarot Deck - if you are new to the Tarot or if you want to do divination with the Thoth deck. Crowley's "Book of Thoth" is a rather meaty tome, and can be daunting to the beginner. To add to this, "Book of Thoth" focuses on the information useful for meditation, pathworking and Magickal theory.
"Mirror" is far more practical in its approach. Each card is reproduced (unfortunately in Black & White rather than Color) with a set of keywords, a basic description of the symbology in the artwork as it applies to a comprehension of the card for divination, and a set of rather new-agey affirmations and excercises (this is my only complaint with the book, however, they make it more accessable, they are small, and I will admit to having used them on occasion). The book ends with some fun items, such as how to find your soul card, & the obligatory layouts.
I have not been exposed to any of his other work, but I just noticed that he has written several other books on the Thoth Deck. This reinforces my initial opinion that "Mirrors" was written to share and make accessable the Thoth Deck and not just to make a buck by invoking Crowley's name.
I recommend getting this book and once you are moderately familiar, grab the "Book of Thoth" to fill in the true depths of most likely the greatest Tarot Deck of all time.

Cant imagine not having it for my Crowely deck

I have to admit that I have not read the book of thoth, and I have not read any other book on the crowly deck, though I would have to say that after I read this book that my Crowley deck seemed to increase in value to me tenfold and it also changed and increased much of my view through the Tarot in General. I have been a small collecter and learned to some degree of the Tarot and this book was definately worth its price. This book is written quite plainly to include a few pages of COMPLETE detail on every card and several chapters on the ways intended or recommended for crowley tarot readings. The discription of the card does not just leave you feeling that you know that such and such means trouble is coming and you should exercise caution, (I would hope anyone looking into the crowley tarot understands the nature of crowley) rather this is a book to follow the path of the tarot as mans growth. Reading this book it completely took the harsh pictures that make the deck sometimes disturbing into a very calculated and helpful tool with very earth shattering sound advise for those that want to have control of there life (just as it seemed Crowley was truely teaching us in his sometimes harsh way)
I recommend it without reservation if you are attracted in anyway to the Crowley deck. Now if you are just getting interested in tarot cards and do not know the back end of a tarot card from adam and don't even know what the Crowley cards look like or that there is a significant differance between decks then I would stop and start doing a lot more suching first before buying this... but definitely come back to buying this.

Reiss and Feineman's luxuriously illustrated book is a sort of meditation on the question, "Is music video an art form?" It is full of the quirky camera angles, arresting colors, and arty atmosphere of both music videos and those Calvin Klein commercials featuring brooding young models, frequently in dishabille. It opens with generally fawning critiques of leading music-video directors, which, printed in tiny type, seem rather an afterthought, definitely intended to take a backseat to the lavish graphics. So get it for the glamorous pix, and acquire some questionable genre criticism on the side. That genre, by the way, is basically the rock video, and there is nary a hint of the cowboy-hats-and-fringe ambience of country music videos. A note of caution is, perhaps, necessary: there is some gratuitous nudity herein, but it is quite tasteful and perfectly in context. Again, think Calvin Klein commercials, with a soft "R" rating, as opposed to the approximately hard "PG" for television. And remember--this is ART. Mike Tribby

Overlooked No More!!

The video is an amazingly overlooked artform. Sure there are plenty of bad throw-away videos made daily, but there are others not so forgettable. This book not only acknowledges that fact, but does a great job of convincing the reader. From Bjork to U2 several artists are known for thier innovation and creativity not only in the recording studio but in the film studio as well. The book does not forget the directors behind these visions. If you look at the names you will see a cross reference of visual artists,fashion photographers big name movie directors and soon-to-be movie directors. 33 frames is a visual treat to look at for both the music fan, photog-lover and coffee book collector. ake a look!.

a design masterpiece

If you love the art of music video - you must buy this book. Just think of all the books written on movies and this really is the first to appreciate the music video as an artform. Even if you are not a music video fan - the images are simply spectacular and the design a masterpiece. Steve Reiss is clearly a rising star of design. A must for video buffs, photography buffs or design buffs.

Exelent book

This book includes hundreds of stills from videos, from various artists, such as Chris Cunningham, Floria Sigismondi, Mark Romanek, Michel Gondry, Samuel Bayer and Anton Corbijn!!! It also gives you a short description on how these talented people got into the the music video buisness. If you have just a little interrest in music videos/Commercials or photography, this book is a must.
It includes forword by the autheur and an interview with Michael Stipe, on how Videos has influenced REM...
Its hard to find any information about music video/directors, but this book mentions all of them( allmost!).
If you want to see more, I highly recomend Floria Sigismondis Redemption, and Mark Romaneks Music Video Stills

One of the Best!

This book was GREAT from cover to cover! I love reading about Marty's family and her birthday, her anxious preparing to leave their only place she ever lived as an adult (picking out clothes, trying to be up to the latest fashions for the trip, etc)...I loved their trip out there (that second hotel...I could just picture it in my mind!)...Then the sweet reunion, Missy catching up on the family events...Clark and the rescue and then the accident...Oh, and the whole ordeal that followed after that had me crying! Janette did such a WONDERFUL job describing the entire ordeal. You could just picture the whole thing as it played out. I felt the pain of Marty and Missy and Clark. I cried with them and I rejoiced later in the story. Clark's faith and love for his family was indeed wonderful. If EVER there was a book a person facing a tragedy should read, it's this one. Clark proved that the mind is much more powerful than the body, and I'm so glad he was still able to carry bags for his wife, help her onto and off of the train, stage...Be the man of the house and work and toil for his family...Those little things mentioned in the story really added a lot to it in my opinion. I cannot say ENOUGH about this book! It was absolutely WONDERFUL!!!!!! Can't wait to read the next.

Wonderful book

Marty and Clark went west to visit with Missie and her family. Clark had accident while saving two boys. Which extended their visit west for a whole year. In which time their came a lost doctor back to his practice while saving Clark from his injury and then Clark became a spiritual leader for the that part of west and they built a church for the community and he finally past the torch to Henry and Marty and Clark went back to their home farm a very goo read. I enjoyed it very much hope you'll enjoy it too.

Decent book

I would of given this book five stars if weren't for the huge change in Marty, Clark, and Missy from the previous books. While Janette Oke is one of my favorite authors, this book was very fire and brimstone must same your soul. While in the previous books the Davis family was very forward with their faith, they weren't trying to convert every person they met. The Marty and Clark from the previous books wouldn't of tried to convert Jedd and every person they meet like they did in this book.
While this book is good and continues the story of the Davis family, it lacks the love and subtlety of the previous books. The hit you over the head religion style takes away from the story in a big way.
I do look forward to reading the last four books in the series. And continuing to see how the movies differ.
