A Very Different, Ambitious Eleventh Doctor Tale...........

Jenny Colgan (J.T. Colgan) has already given us an incredible Doctor Who Eleventh Doctor novel with "Dark Horizons". The similarity here is that we get what is clearly a Doctor Who story that, in my opinion, plays better in the print medium than it would on the screen. The story is complex, and I actually appreciated the reveal and the resolution leaving just as much, if not more, shrouded in mystery as was brought to light. A very well realized Eleventh Doctor here, Matt Smith's voice played clearly in this reader's head. And though I've heard the author suggest that she questions whether she has a handle on Clara Oswald (portrayed by Jenna Coleman in the ongoing television series), I believe she does. Clara is a character that has, I suspect, up to this point, come across better with Coleman interpreting her via her performance, than on the page. If the reader is familiar with the character, she will be recognizable, in what we know of her from the television series as well as what we still do not. Even getting inside Clara's head, she still maintains an air of mystery. The story here is vast and intimate at the same time, and navigating it isn't always easy, but well worth it. This readers opinion: One won't finish this book fully understanding what transpired, and one shouldn't. What remains a mystery deals with knowledge that shouldn't necessarily be known, because the knowing can have devastating consequences for the one who comes to know it. There are some nice references here to past, and more recent Doctor Who mythos as well. I enjoyed this greatly, and I hope that this is just the beginning of Colgan's contributions to the world of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who: Into the Nowhere is the eleventh doctor’s turn to be captured in print by the Time Trips series. He and Clara stumble upon a mysterious planet with no name or known history. Not even the TARDIS knows where they are. Not long after they leave the safety of the TARDIS, they realize that the world might not want its secrets uncovered and it seems as if the elements themselves turn against the Doctor and his companion.

The Doctor and Clara encounter a dizzying number of obstacles from the get-go in this fast-paced mystery. At times there was so much being thrown at them that it seemed chaotic, in a nail biting and enjoyable sense. For instance, at one point they escape a moving forest closing in on them, run into a conflagration of sorts, jump through it and almost fall off a cliff with a valley full of huge maggots beneath and an animated skeleton on the other side. Then they get attacked by a giant snake, all without catching their breath. Whatever forces exist on this planet, mean business.

All the authors that write for this series have done an exceptional job at writing their characters into some original and entertaining circumstances. The same can certainly be said for Jenny Colgan in this story. What has consistently amazed me with every installment in this series, is the way the authors are able to replicate the mannerisms and details from the characters we know and love from the television show, and make them believable. The eleventh doctor is full of quirk and insanity, energy and goofiness. Jenny has done Matt Smith proud with her installment, just as she has done a service for Whovians by creating this wonderfully diverting short story. Clara seemed to be a bit angrier than usual, and maybe a tad whiney at times but such is the lot for a Doctor Who companion. I didn't feel that her character was as believable as the Doctor for most of the story but that doesn't hurt things too badly.

As long as you don’t expect to have all the answers by the end, you won’t be disappointed by Into the Nowhere. It’s funny and action packed and it’s chocked full of timey-wimey adventure that any fan would enjoy. In looking back, the fact that there were still questions at the end didn’t detract from my over-all enjoyment of the story. The missing pieces add to the story and I hope one day to read (or possibly see) more from this story-line in the future.

The Lost Planet Unmentionable

This was an awesome imagining that really let me feel like the eleventh Doctor and Clara could continue traveling together forever! I know the writer has to be a HUGE fan to be able to wrote the characters so well and come up with a completely new adventure unlike anything ever seen in the actual series :) I really enjoyed it and would love to read more adventures by her with any of the doctor and companions! Really a gem for true Whovians!

Bruce has taught teachers in each of the 50 states and internationally about improving student learning and sparking a love of learning. This is his third book.

Complicated Plot...Compelling Characters...Satisfying Conclusion

I have been looking forward to this book since reading Kieran Shields' terrific debut novel, The Truth of All Things, early last year. That book introduced the two main characters - Perceval Grey and Archie Lean - and several others, including the villain Jotham Marsh. I truly enjoyed the story of "Truth" while being ontroduced to the characters...the story in "Study/Revenge" was more complicated and - frankly - convoluted than "Truth," but the characters and their devlopment are absolutely wonderful. The start - perhaps the first 10% - was VERY promising, with a couple of Portland's criminals either found dead or seen plunging to death...even better, as Lean investigates, he notes fear among the rest of the city's criminal class that they may be subject to the same fate. Then, it drags until about halfway, as a host of other plot lines are introduced, a bit too many (especially when compared to the mor "tightly" writen "Truth"), but that's just my opinion. But here's the thing: the last 1/3 to 1/2 of the book is absolutely thrilling - and smart - and the seemingly unrelated and disparate threads do come together. The author does a great favor to those who invested their time and mind and emotions into the debut novel. I do look forward to #3.

An Intelligent Historical Fiction Mystery!

Synopsis: A thief is murdered in a really unpleasant way with symbols from the occult close to his body. Problem is, Deputy Archie Lean witnessed this thief being buried 2 days earlier. Meanwhile, criminologist Percival Grey is helping a dying wealthy tycoon who is desperately attempting to locate a stolen artifact and if Mr. Grey could happen to find his missing granddaughter who is probably attached to the artifact that would just be spectacular.

My rating: 4.5 Stars

My opinion: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE when I find intelligently written historical fiction mysteries. This book is a prime example! This book was beautifully laid out in its' mystery storyline divulging just enough to keep its' readers "whistle whet" while telling a very different type of mystery than your typical historical mysteries, which tend to bore me to tears at this point!

His characters were approachable and well thought out. What I loved most about the characters is that the author was dynamic in interjecting just enough humor into their "lines" which is a must in a book to suck me in. They had what another reviewer called "snarkiness" and I love that.

Stand Alone or Part of a Series: Part of series. I must say that normally I am pretty compulsive about reading series in order, but this one stood fine on its' own. Although I will be going back immediately and reading the first in series and then stalking to see new releases. So, thank you to Mr. Shields and Crown Publishing Group for giving me yet ANOTHER series to read! ; )

Review:

"A Study in Revenge" by Kieran Shields was a good mystery, historical,thriller series. I have not read the first book 'The Truth of all Things' and maybe that was why I didn't understand some parts of this novel but what I could understand ....I did like. I had a feeling I was still missing something that had gone on in the first novel...but again it was a very intriguing historical read...Sort of like the 'Sherlock Holmes' novels. This story setting was from Portland, Maine in the year of 1893. In this novel we have a 'Victorian' private investiagator and police consultant... Perceval Grey and we have Archie Lean who is a dedicated 'Deputy of Police'...dedicated to the State and its people. Grey and Lean come together trying to unravel a mystery and that is:

"The body of a local thief is discovered under unusual circumstances, with evidence of the occult (or at least somebody trying to stage it to look that way). The problem is, the thief in question was killed days earlier and was already buried, meaning that whoever staged the scene also robbed his grave."

Be ready for a lots of twist and turns...keep up or you could get lost...also be ready for "Viking runes, explosions, the occult, mysterious tunnels, robberies, shootings, burnings, and grave robbing, just to name some." It will be a long read but if you continue to will find out what the 'Revenge" was in the story! I will stop there to say you must pick up " Study in Revenge" to see what all the author had instore for the reader. The characters all well developed and the author did some job working all this in with some some religion and along with the murders that will tie in three different mysteries.

If you are in for a historical thriller mystery "A Study in Revenge" would be a good read that I would recommend for you
