This textbook is composed of twenty tutorials which go into great detail concerning the development, cerebral flow regulation, cerebral arterial & venous circulation, the surgical and radiographic anatomy of arteries and veins in the spinal cord and brain.

The next step the author takes is to look at cerebral aneurysms, malformations of the brain, dural arterial malformations, spinal AVMs, etc. He then goes into the treatment of these lesions using a variety of embolic agents and spring coils. There is a separate chapter toward the end of the textbook just on complications. He discusses embolic and thrombotic stroke and its treatment. The line drawings depicting the circulatory anatomy are very nice and detailed. A few photos and cadaveric illustrations could have been added to complement the text. This book is well suited for any medical student, resident, neurosurgeon, neurologist, or radiologist.

The life of a general surgeon is more guts than glamour. About the Author
Paul A. Ruggieri, M.D., is a practicing board-certified general/laparoscopic surgeon who has been operating for over 20 years. Dr. Ruggieri performed his surgical training at the world-renowned Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes Hospital, in St. Louis. He then spent three years as an active duty general surgeon in the U.S. Army. Currently, he is former chief of the department of surgery at a large community hospital in Fall River, Massachusetts, the very hospital he helped build as an ironworker before attending medical school nearly 30 years ago. Sharp as a scalpel describing the demands required to be a surgeon and the sacrifices made

As a fellow physician I can really feel what you are writing. Though I am a dermatologist, I can relate to your experiences as a surgeon. I think few outside of the medical profession could understand this as well. Some may criticize your discontent with the system--they obviously know little about what physicians have to deal with daily. Making statements about being paid for your services is correct. Quite simply, you busted your ass to get to where you are, you truly do deal with life or death daily, and you have to deal with regulations that are time consuming and heinous, made by people who have no understanding what someone like yourself has to do. You have every right to be angry about it. I applaud you for sharing true stories about patients who you saved, who you didn't, and who you wanted to but couldn't. I understand your questioning yourself about the decisions you make. Though my field is so much less intense both in hours worked and severity, you vividly portray the true sacrifice you made to become a surgeon and to practice as one. I don't know how anyone could really understand and appreciate it unless they have worked 100 hour weeks taking care of patients. Though I don't do that now, I did in the past, and it is all the more reason I feel everything you are writing. The public should pay attention to your comments about the number of surgeons retiring in their 50's and 60's the shortage of surgeons to come, and the difference in training of the current generation. If it were up to me, you'd be paid multiples of what you currently earn. There is almost no amount of compensation that would not be justified for the sacrifices you incurred, the difficult life you lead, and the demands of your profession. When you write about the 7 hours throughout the night you spent assisting your colleague trying to find an ovary through dense scar tissue, and note that a plumber is paid more, you are not exaggerating, you are telling a fact. It is truly bullcrap that our society allows this blatant disregard for your skills. How much does a pilot make flying a plane 7 hours? An investment banker on wall street? Yet they do not face the potential of death and lawsuits. I hold you in high regard for writing what you did.

Not always right but never in doubt

Surgeons are full of courage. To cut into another human being, slicing through the living, bleeding skin, exposing the interior organs, removing, rearranging or remodeling them, requires outrageous conceit. An elective surgery, performed on a patient who is healthy, who freely requests such injury in pursuit of a greater good, is daring enough. But surgeons are often confronted with a desperate person, one who teeters on the brink of death, desiring only life. Surgery in such circumstances may save them, or it may hasten their departure to the land from which none return. The final arbiter of that hasty decision may be a judge and jury, and the final disposition financial and social ruin for the intrepid doctor. Who would choose such a job in a time of shrinking pay and waxing quality reviews?

Fortunately for all of us, there are plenty of individuals who would. The old axiom that surgeons are born, not made, holds true. Regardless of the rewards or penalties exacted upon their persons, surgeons can be nothing else but surgeons. So they tell us. And Dr. Ruggieri tells us plenty. In Confessions of a Surgeon, we read about his emotions, his late night thoughts, his shortcomings and misgivings, his resentments towards his patients, in short, his all too human traits. He writes about his mistakes, how they affect him, and how they affect his patients. Most patients don't like to think of their surgeon as a human being, but surgeons have all the limitations that the human condition entails. Star Trek Voyager may have the perfectly unflappable android doc, but you and I were born too soon for that. Some readers want the unvarnished truth, and here they will get it. If you prefer your surgeons on a pedestal, don't read this book.

Dr. Ruggieri is not a professional writer, and Confessions is more like a conversation than a polished narrative. There are clichés, repetitions, and meandering paragraphs, but it does not detract from the story. This is highly readable, informative and entertaining. He allows you to walk into surgery with him, belly up to the table, and get your hands bloody. If you really want to know what happens in an operating room, or what a surgeon thinks about while you complain about your belly ache, it is all here in living color.

I am an anesthesiologist, so I spend my days and nights working with surgeons, helping them, accepting their help, joking with them, and fighting with them. I have made a close study of the surgical personality, and Dr. Ruggieri is an outstanding specimen. He writes about the enormous complexities of human physiology, yet he is compelled to fast decisions and faster action. He writes about being humbled by his profession, and in the next paragraph he compares surgeons to gods. That is the mind of a surgeon. When he says humble, he means as humble as a god can be. I'm having some fun here, but considering what they do every day, you have to give them enormous respect. You have to respect his writing too. This book is a winner.

Very insightful

I originally bought this book in the Kindle version but then wanted to give it as a gift to a doctor friend so I bought this hard-cover version for him. The author, a successful surgeon, is remarkably forthright in his descriptions of the life of a surgeon, covering his days in medical school to his early practice and later as a more experienced and respected practitioner. It is his openness about his mistakes that makes the book so interesting. I certainly admire him. He is not happy with the way the practice of medicine is moving today and spends a lot of time refuting it. That part can seem a bit preachy but the book is well worth it.

Great for me. I was looking for a Math book with TI-Nspire as the graphing calculator to improve learning.

Great content for me. I was looking for a Math book that includes TI-Nspire guides as the graphing calculator to improve learning. And this one has lots of this infomation.
The book follows the IB topics in the way that I needed. It has very good explanations and examples, very well illustrated and completed with information about the theory of knowledge. I found a very good resource for my students.
My 4 stars rating is due to the price. It is too high for mexican purchase power, all my students can't afford it. Even for me is too expensive and I have to do a great, great effort to buy it.

More examples needed and those given are not always well graded, but its mostly OK. Certainly no where near as dire as some reviewers would have had me believe. Good section on using the Nspire calculator.

Epic plotting; Naval engagements to gritty melee.

Dark Apostle is the third in the Word Bearers series and the culmination of a massive plot. Of course when you consider that the Word Bearers and other Traitor Legions are over 10,000 years old and their schemes stretch over millennia it's hard to grasp the scope of such a "plot". Wheels within wheels and the Word Bearers are plotters in the extreme.

The story of Dark Apostle Marduk continues and his goal of using the ancient Necron technology to essentially propel himself higher up the food chain and bring as much chaos to the Imperium as possible is fought with peril from within and without.

As any reader vaguely familiar with the material can surmise, Chaos Space Marines, while disciplined are still suffering from some serious testosterone poisoning. They're all plotting and scheming to be the Alpha Male. That mush is established. Unlike say the World Eaters, the Word Bearer Legion has their own way of pursuing personal goals (vendettas?) and Anthony Reynolds does a great job of breaking it all down so we as readers can follow these spider-web plots (without dumbing it down too much).

Seriously...I have to commend Mr. Reynolds for his deft handling of the story. He gives good insight to the inner workings of the Word Bearers as well as the White Consuls Space Marines (and many others) who are working in opposition to Marduk's plans. Without spoiling anything let it suffice to say that the scale of the novel is pretty ginormous. Epic. Sector fleets, multiple hosts of the Word Bearers, several chapters of Astartes as well as innumerable Imperial Guardsmen and the various Titan Legions. (Most of this is inferred or happens "off-camera")

This is a novel with a lot of moving parts. Tons going on. Anthony Reynolds does a really good job of keeping it manageable for the reader. The battles range from naval engagements to gritty melee.

I've always found it difficult to get in to reading the Chaos-side of Warhammer novels. They seem so unbelievably over the top that I have a hard time suspending disbelief. Often with Space Marines as well...they seem too perfect. Chaos Space Marines in contrast become the most heinous thing ever. It's too...black and white.

Anthony Reynolds does an admirable job in keeping things believable. Granted, there are still moments where the Astartes are perfectly heroic and the Chaos Marines are perfectly heinous. Still...my spidey-sense wasn't going off and telling me to glaze over pages due to *yawn* more nail a baby to your forehead moments.

I think Mr. Reynolds does however have an excellent grasp on the dark, hopelessness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It's a messed up place where a human is one among untold bajillions and nobody will miss your passing. The author definitely has this DOWN.

One think I do appreciate in this novel is that there appears to be very real peril around all the characters, including Marduk. Nobody is safe. Any of them can be crushed by falling beams, have their head blown off or simply die an ignoble death (which is SUCH an appropriate 40k thing).

My only complaint would be that due to the massive scope of the plot, there's a lot of interesting things going on, and it's easy to get lost. Granted Mr. Reynolds does a great job in showing us one scene, then shifting the camera elsewhere to see a scene...sometimes it's easy to start wondering "Hey, what happened to Brother Bob?" Largely the author does a great job in keeping the suspense going. Still, there are some parts that I personally would have loved to see more of...but that's really just a personal quibble. I think in reading we gravitate towards some characters more than others...and sometimes those characters aren't really the focus of the story. Meh, it happens. Still a damn good book!

Rating:
Overall it's a fitting ending (?) to the Word Bearer series.
A very good read whether a part of the series or as a stand-alone novel.

Finally Something Other Than Just An Empire Novel

There was always something missing from the Warhammer 40k books I've read. Everything seemed to be about the Empire and Chaos and I kept waiting for a story to include some xenos; I also wanted to see things from a perspective other than "the good guys". Finally, my desires have been answered on both fronts.

I believe this is book three in the series and not having read them I can't say if they are as good, but I was pulled into this one immediately. The first thing that impressed me was how easy the author made it to get into the story. He seamlessly reference past events, but always clearly enough you get a general idea, even if you don't know particulars. It was so easy to jump in that I finished the book a week earlier than planned and in far fewer sessions than usual. I'd pick it up planning to read for a half hour and still be at it two hours later.

At various points you see through the eyes of three main factions in the story. You have the Chaos warriors, the Space Marines, and the Imperial Guard to a lesser extent. It was refreshing to see things from each point of view. It gives a better sense of the motivations behind the actions. My only gripe, I would have liked to see more from the Necrons perspective; however, it was enough just to see them as such an awe inspiring power.

The battles were spectacular, some of the best I've seen in a Warhammer book. In other books the odds are just so huge in one side's favor that it strains belief that a small group could slaughter so many enemies. You begin to wonder how the enemy can ever beat anybody if they are so inept. Not here, these battles nearly all felt plausible and I think that's what makes them so compelling. Whats more, you've got nearly everything thrown in at least once; from soldiers to tanks, demons to aliens, you even have Titans and a moon sized star fortress thrown into the mix. Very cool.

From start to finish I enjoyed this book. If you haven't read the others in the series or even a single Warhammer 40k book before, you should still give this one a try. It won't disappoint.

Good, but nothing really new

While this is a fine novel, which also does a good job as a stand-alone work, there is nothing really groundbreaking in it. After a while, all the 40K novels start to seem the same. Aside from the epic combat with the necrons in the closing part of the book, there was nothing that had not already been done in other novels at some point.

Taking up soon after the conclusion of the second book in the series, Anthony Reynolds did a better job than in that second book of introducing the characters to readers who might have missed the first two books in the series. This was aided in part by the introduction of new characters, though their parts were generally behind the scenes.

Making use of the device, the acquisition of which was the focus of the first book and obtaining the means to use in the second book, the Word Bearers send a huge number of their own to assault a seemingly-impregnable Imperial system. The Nexus Arrangement changes that status, as it cuts off the Warp and prevents reinforcements from arriving to relieve the Imperials, who suffer unimaginable casualties as a result. However, the device's activation catches the attention of those who made it: The necrons. While they don't appear until the end phase of the book, disrupting the conquest in progress, they are pretty much the only new feature in the book for the 40k series, as their implacable alien nature sees them succeed against the Astartes better than any other foe.

However, while the resolution might seem novel to some, it was hardly a surprise, using a device that was introduced in the book's opening and served no purpose at all throughout, leading any reader to realize at the onset how the book would be resolved. This has the result of a very abbreviated ending after the long and drawn-out pages of brutal combat that make up so many of the books from the Black Library.

I liked the book, but I would only recommend it to someone who has not read a great deal of the 40K universe, as it will seem repetitive and staid.

Perfect positive actions

EXCELLENT LITTLE BOOK!!!

This has been the most uplifting little book I've put my hands on in years. So, great that I've purchased about 20 of these over the past 4 years to give as gifts for birthday, new job, new home, Christmas, etc. Every time I pick it up, I find something new and great to think about and share. About the Author
In tribute to her son's passing, Lora C Mercado has been on a quest to help bring peace to those who are in a state of grief with her healing and inspirational books. She is also the founder of the website, HealingTheGrief.com, which provides articles and resources to help one cope with grief and loss.

"Our Angels Await, Stories of Love from Beyond", includes true stories from people across the globe who have had connections with loved ones who have passed away.

"Adjusting to Life After Loss, Coping with the Death of a Loved One and Honoring Their Memory", was released in October 2014. The second book in the series, "Adjusting to Life After the Loss of a Child, Coping, Healing and Understanding the Emotions of Grief" is her latest book, released in January 2015.

adjusting life after a tragic loss...

I remember the pain I felt when my grandmother passed away, it pained me so much that it took a couple of months for me to move on and be back to normal again. This book will truly help anyone who suffers pain and got a hard time cooping it, and it has a lot to share to wipe the tears away. I just now realize that it is better that you have something to lean on during difficult times, just like reading this book.

"In reading about the losses the author went through, I found comfort in reading this book, knowing she had first had experience in personal grief. There are a lot of good tips to get through the rough patches. I also liked how my emotions were validated, as they are all a part of the grieving process, I now realize I am not losing my mind."

The narrator, Tessie, is the first one to see the "clouds rolling in,/ gray clouds, bunched and bulging under a purple sky," and she engineers a joyful rain dance with her three friends, Jackie-Joyce, Liz and Rosemary. The long-sought rain "freckles our feet, glazes our toes./ We turn in circles,/ glistening in our rain skin." According to Hesse's bio on the jacket flap, this text contains her initial exploration of motifs used first in her Newbery Medal-winning novel, Out of the Dust. With poetic and immediate language, she again captures the cleansing experience of rainfall after a long dry spell. In an auspicious debut, Muth's illustrations showcase an impressive range of perspectives, from the opening urban skyline to the subtle indication of the oncoming storm in the ruffling of a curtain to the girls' view looking up at their mothers from where they're dancing in the street. Kindergarten-Grade 2-It's summer in the city and a three-week drought has made the heat nearly unbearable. Skinny little Tessie whispers her prayer, "Come on, rain!" longing for the shower that will break the heat and bring her mother's parched garden back to life. Seeking relief, the girl asks permission to wear her bathing suit, but an "Absolutely not" from Mamma keeps her looking for something to do. Like a blessing, she spies clouds off in the distance. Knowing that her mother will be easier to convince with help from a friend, Tessie runs off to her pal Jackie-Joyce's. "It's going to rain," she whispers. "Put on your suit and come straight over." Tessie returns home to fix her mother a much-needed iced tea, and with the perfect timing of a well-laid plan, Jackie-Joyce arrives along with the rain. As hoped, Mamma changes her mind about the suit and the girls run off to join two friends for a romp in the deliciously refreshing summer rain. To their daughters' delight, all four "...barelegged mammas dance down the steps..." and join in a spontaneous dance of relief and celebration. Muth's deceptively simple, muted watercolors capture the stifling city summer heat as well as a young girl's determination to keep it from ruining all her fun. Hesse's poetically crafted, perceptive text skips delightfully along with its own perfect rhythm. Lyrically written and lovingly illustrated, this is one you'll want to share over and over again.

Wonderful Story and illustrations

My kids have really enjoyed this book. The art work is just superb and beautifully done. The story is also entertaining. I have also shared this book at school and the teachers have enjoyed the story.

Hope Karen Hesse puts out some more wonderful books and art.
