This Atlas is principally based on the Brush Foundation Study of Human Growth and Development, conceived in 1929 by Professor T. Wingate Todd of Western Reserve University School of Medicine. This intensive study collected data on the maturation of human anatomy through the meticulous X-raying of a series of research subjects enrolled in the study as juveniles—some as young as three months—and thereafter routinely weighed and measured at three-month to one-year intervals, depending on their age.

This Atlas utilizes not only the X-ray films to which Todd had access but, also, those which were obtained in the six years subsequent to Todd's publication of his Atlas of Skeletal Maturation of the Hand. The X-ray standards in the present volume are, therefore, the first to be based exclusively on the research of the Brush Foundation Study.

Came in a hard cover. With all the details from the first edition. Just what I needed for my thesis. Good book! Recommended for people working in the peadiatrics, radiology or even orthodontics field.

This atlas is a must for forensic practitioners who perform age estimation based on skeletal development. Every library should have at least one copy. This atlas by Greulich and Pyle is a classic. Of course it is even better when read together with other atlases recommended automatically by eBay! I am glad and extremely happy to receive this copy.

Repetitive and rambling

According to the intro, "How to be the Luckiest Person Alive" is supposed to "unleash the core that will drive you from desire to ambition to meaning." Readers can be forgiven if they are still a confused. This book isn't The Secret and it's not going to help you figure out what your life means. It also won't talk about luck.

So what does the book actually cover? A lot. An awful lot. Everything from whether to buy a house, what to do when you're suddenly wealthy, why to avoid college, and how to fire employees. It's nominally about some very high-level generalities about running startup businesses.

The biggest problem is that everything is in lists. Long lists. Long lists with little supporting detail or emphasis. Any real points quickly get lost as he races from one bullet to the next, with no hint which is essential, which is a joke and which is just filler. In one classic chapter, he rattles off over 80 "rules" for a business. Some some like crucial, vital pieces of information like "get a customer" and "be profitable". These rules sound like they can make or break a business and should always be followed. Other rules sound like handy tips, like "have killer parties" and "at Christmas, donate money to every customer's favorite charity." By the time you've droned through ten pages, everything blurs and the really key ideas (whichever they were) are lost. And since it is just a long list of rules, most readers will forget them before the chapter is done.

After he goes through several anecdotes including an uncomfortable chapter when he seems fixated on how much sex and drugs he did in college, the useful content more or less fizzes out. There's no real conclusion and nothing to wrap it up. Instead, as if to ensure that we forget everything, we get almost 100 pages of direct reprints of various blog articles which are, you guessed it, more lists. And since they were blog posts, each chapter is disconnected from everything which came before and after.

He writes very well as a blogger. The list format is a natural fit and writing short, self-contained essays is a virtue. As a book however, it is a failure. My advice is to subscribe to his blog and skip the book.

As an Altucher fan, I am very disappointed

I am a regular reader of James Altucher's blog, and immediately purchased this book when I learned of it. I was excited to read this, but am very disappointed. The book is basically a copy and paste rehash of his blog posts. On his blog, he admits that it took him three weeks to put this book together. It shows. The book is full of misspellings and typos. One of the chapters invites readers to leave a comment in the comment section - obviously something that should have been edited out when pasting from his blog.

I really wanted to like this book, however it is so sloppy that it is almost unreadable.

This Book Eats Your Time Worse Than All Those Blogs & FaceBook

This book falls into the Janis Joplin category "It's so good don't ever start." It's really hard not to read another chapter. I found myself reading instead of working. I am buying more copies for my entrepreneur buddies.

Altucher has screwed up more deals, passed up more opportunities, and utterly thrown away more money than anybody I know. He tells you exactly how he did it. As he points out, you learn most from your mistakes, and he's learned a lot.

I've read the other reviews. They all are truthful. Your expectations will become your reality.

So just buy the book, OK? Your Margarita last night cost more. But this is funny and lasts longer.

About the Author

Les Rowntree is a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, where he researches and writes about environmental issues. This career change comes after three decades of teaching both Geography and Environmental Studies at San Jose State University in California. As an environmental geographer, Dr. Rowntree’s interests focus on international environmental issues, biodiversity conservation, and human-caused global change. He sees world regional geography as a way to engage and inform students by giving them the conceptual tools needed to critically assess global issues. Dr. Rowntree has done research in Iceland, Alaska, Morocco, Mexico, Australia, and Europe, as well as in his native California. Current writing projects include a book on the natural history of California’s coast, as well as textbooks in geography and environmental science.

Martin Lewis is a Senior Lecturer in History at Stanford University. He has conducted extensive research on environmental geography in the Philippines and on the intellectual history of global geography. His publications include Wagering the Land: Ritual, Capital, and Environmental Degradation in the Cordillera of Northern Luzon, 1900—1986 (1992), and, with Karen Wigen, The Myth of Continents: A Critique of Metageography (1997). Dr. Lewis has traveled extensively in East, South, and Southeast Asia. His current research focuses on the geographical dimensions of globalization. In April 2009, Dr. Lewis was recognized by Time Magazine, as a favorite lecturer.

Marie Price is a Professor of Geography and International Affairs at George Washington University. A Latin American specialist, Marie has conducted research in Belize, Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba, and Bolivia. She has also traveled widely throughout Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. Her studies have explored human migration, natural resource use, environmental conservation, and regional development. She is a non-resident fellow of the Migration Policy Institute, a non-partisan think tank that focuses on immigration. Dr. Price brings to Globalization and Diversity a special interest in regions as dynamic spatial constructs that are shaped over time through both global and local forces. Her publications include the co-edited book, Migrants to the Metropolis: The Rise of Immigrant Gateway Cities (2008, Syracuse University Press) and numerous academic articles and book chapters.

Bill Wyckoff is a geographer in the Department of Earth Sciences at Montana State University specializing in the cultural and historical geography of North America. He has written and co-edited several books on North American settlement geography, including The Developer’s Frontier: The Making of the Western New York Landscape (1988), The Mountainous West: Explorations in Historical Geography (1995) (with Lary M. Dilsaver), Creating Colorado: The Making of a Western American Landscape 1860—1940 (1999), and On the Road Again: Montana’s Changing Landscape (2006), and How to Read The American West (2014). In 2003, he received Montana State’s Cox Family Fund for Excellence Faculty Award for Teaching and Scholarship. A World Regional Geography instructor for 27 years, Dr. Wyckoff emphasizes the connections between the everyday lives of his students and the larger global geographies that surround them and increasingly shape their future.

Steve Crist is the photography editor for TASCHEN, where he recently produced Marilyn by Andre de Dienes and Steve McQueen by William Claxton. He is currently working with Hugh Hefner on Hugh Hefner's Playboy, as well as on books with famed writer Hunter S. Thompson and on William Claxton's forthcoming Jazz opus Jazztife. A California native, Steve is based at the TASCHEN America offices in Los Angeles. Barbara Hitchcock is the director of cultural affairs for the Polaroid Corporation in Waltham, Massachusetts. She acquires fine art photographs for Polaroid and is responsible for managing its traveling exhibitions and multi-million dollar art collections. She has been the curator of several national exhibitions and currently serves on the Photography Collection Committee of Harvard University Art Museums, Cambridge.

One of the BEST photo compilations ever!!!

My dad bought a Polaroid Land Camera (of the peel-apart type) before I was born... to take pictures of his chubby firstborn (that would be me, BTW).

Ever since, the sharp, colorful and amazingly stable little prints became part of our family's memory. My love for pictures was definitely boosted by the instant gratification offered by an SX-70 camera, which I still own and use after 25+ years, as well as a brand new Jobpro 600.

"The Polaroid Book" is a must for any hardcore Polaroid fan. Lotsa pictures, beautifully printed, with absolute respect for the authors' vision (Ansel Adams, Joyce Tenneson and Bill Allard, to mention only three of them). Nevertheless, the book's greatest virtue is to prove, without any doubt, that beautiful and creative work can be achieved with the simplest tools and the sheer power of imagination.

Polaroid is still alive and well, and this book is the best supporting evidence. Now, I'll just lay back and wait for that new new-old stock Polaroid Nightcam that I bought on the company's website. Let's see what that 600 film-munching baby can do.

A delightful, detailed guide

Visual eye candy compiled by Steve Crist from the archives of the "Polaroid Collections of Photography" are presented in The Polaroid Book, a delightful display highly recommended for photography collections at the college and public library levels. Most color and some duotone shots are presented one to a page for maximum impact. The artist index and polaroid model styles are in the back, so as not to detract from the image impacts. A delightful, detailed guide to what the camera can do at its best.

What a SEXY book!!!

WOW... words can't even begin to describe how much I love this book! It's about time they released a book like this! And the wrapper of this book is genius! It looks like a gigantic box of Polaroid film... I didn't even want to remove the cover at first... I fondled it for awhile and then I slowly peeled it off and curled up on the couch for an hour or two and looked at all the pretty pictures.

This book is highly recommended for any Polaroid enthusiast! And if you want to see some great 'roids on the net- check out Polanoid.net!

About the Author
Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche, a lama in the B�n tradition of Tibet, presently resides in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is the founder and director of Ligmincha Institute, an organization dedicated to the study and practice of the teachings of the B�n tradition. He was born in Amritsar, India, after his parents fled the Chinese invasion of Tibet and received training from both Buddhist and B�n teachers, attaining the degree of Geshe, the highest academic degree of traditional Tibetan culture. He has been in the United States since 1991 and has taught widely in Europe and America.

An excellent support guide.

I"m glad I didn't start with this book on the three doors of body, speech, and mind. In many ways it's more of a reference/guide book to support an existing practice than to start a new one. As such, I feel it's probably most useful for students enrolled in his "The Three Doors" training program, or for self starters, like myself, who use his practice trilogy on the three doors.

My main concern with beginning with this book is that I would have almost certainly never have done anything with it. I'd just have more head knowledge. Excellent head knowledge, but unused, unpracticed head knowledge just the same. Yet this doesn't mean this isn't an excellent book. And if you're only looking for a concise understanding of this Bon practice, I can't think of a better single volume than this one.

However if you would actually like to have a better chance of changing your life, I'd recommend starting with these three practice manuals first. All three come with either a practice CD or DVD.

Awakening The Luminous Mind: Tibetan Meditation for Inner Peace and Joy -- This is my favorite. It can be practiced anytime, anywhere, with near instant results.
Awakening the Sacred Body -- The DVD makes this so much easier to understand. Drawings of this yogic practice never worked for me.
Tibetan Sound Healing: Seven Guided Practices to Clear Obstacles, Cultivate Positive Qualities, and Uncover Your Inherent Wisdom -- Finding a supportive place to practice this may be a challenge.

None of these practices are difficult to do. Which is part of the problem since we tend to value complexity over simplicity, assuming that it's more advanced and thus more effective. This has had lead teachers of all traditions to come up with all kinds of preliminary teachings and practices just to get the student to the point where they can finally accept simplicity. You can save yourself many years and much grief if you can accept the effectiveness of such simple practices like these.

This author writes well. He writes CLEARLY. And, I happen to know from my friend the real-life Lama that this guy has the REAL scoop. He is the real deal.
He is, hands down, my favorite author on this subject.

Where to begin...

I have never before read a book where the author is so shamelessly self-promoting as Chris Brownfield. As another reviewer previously pointed out, his arrogance removes most (if not all) of his credibility, and makes this book very difficult to enjoy. For someone who was clearly not an outstanding JO (not by a long shot), he has way too much criticism and not enough respect for his fellow Navy submariners.

For a book titled "My Nuclear Family", Brownfield spends a lot of time talking about his IA in Iraq and his problems with the US government and the War on Terror. All organizations, particularly the US government has it's fair share of problems, however I hardly consider a sub JO an expert on politics or the intricacies of war. His claims that submarines are obsolete in today's Navy only further demonstrate his ignorance on the subjects.

I was led to read this book because I am quite familiar with the Navy's nuclear training pipeline and the job requirements of a submarine JO. As such, I was most interested in the first part of Brownfield's book which focuses on his time as a JO on the USS Hartford. It seems to me that Brownfield was a sub-standard officer at best, and is now a disgruntled ex-employee of the Navy who wanted to write a bitch-fest about how difficult his job had been while simultaneously making himself out to be the lone person deserving of respect in a profession he believes to be fallen.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. The officers currently serving in our sub force are an important part of our national defense and are very deserving of our respect and gratitude, despite what Brownfield thinks.

I Don't Trust This Man

I might as well say it straight out: I just don't trust this man. His book consists of a series of stories about his experiences in the US Navy, interspersed with expositions on the nature of war in general and the Iraq War in particular. The tone of both the stories and the expositions is one of unremitting arrogance. He's always the smartest guy in the room, and -- with a few notable exceptions -- everyone around him is incompetent, dishonest, or both. This attitude not only makes for some tortuous reading, it also undermines his credibility as an author. And credibility is everything for this book, because Brownfield makes some pretty damning claims about the U.S. Military without providing any evidence to back them up.

Now, perhaps these claims are all true. I have no illusions about the perfection of either our military or our political leadership, particularly during the Bush administration. But I need facts to back up the kinds of claims of incompetence Brownfield makes, not just opinions, and the author provides no evidence whatever that the events actually happened, much less in the contemptible, bumbling manner he describes. There are no footnotes in this book, no documentation of the events, no research -- just a series of stories and opinions. According to his introduction, he is revealing classified information and he's changed the names of all the people he belittles, so there's no way to check his facts, much less validate his opinions. All we have to go on is his word, and that's why personal credibility is so important to this book. Given the smug, self-serving tone of superiority that permeates the book, I find no compelling reason to believe his claims.

As to the lectures on war that break up the stories, they mostly state the obvious or rehash events that are much better covered in other books -- books that carefully document the inner workings of our military and the political manipulations that led to the invasion of Iraq (read Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2003 to 2005 if you really want the facts). But if there is anybody left on the planet who still thinks that Saddam Hussein was behind the 9/11 attacks, or that he really did have weapons of mass destruction, this author has nothing new to say to them.

I was hoping to learn something of value from this book, something that might help me understand why our country continues to have these terrible and costly military misadventures. All I learned from this book is that the author was always the smartest guy in the room. Or chose to believe that he was.

Black Sheep Writes About His Family

Christopher Brownfield was a substandard nuclear officer by his own admissions. He uses his weaknesses (non-technical major in a technical field and being a junior officer) to excuse unprofessionalism and the acceptance of low standards.

The guy who can barely pass his nuclear plant basic exams after over a year of training somehow (according to his writings) turns out to be the smartest, most ethical guy in the room on every occasion. Strange isn't it? Not so strange if you are the author of the book and have a huge ego and want to look back at your past and see everyone else to blame for anything that went wrong around you.

When Chris gets older and perhaps reaches maturity, he may look back on his time in the Navy and be ready to write a real tell all book about where he went wrong and let down all his bosses ... from the CO that he didn't save from running the Sub aground to the Iraqi's that he couldn't help protect or help get electrical power.

Yes, there are things beyond one's control, but Chris is a loser who makes excuses for his own shortcomings. It is obvious why "Jessica Rabbit" (a character in the book) dumped him. If he was a "doer" rather than a whiner, he would have had successes to write about.

I'm throwing my copy of his book away. It wasn't worth the $4 I paid for it.
