Lessons on life

I wanted to read this book before seeing the movie, and I must say that I enjoyed it immensely. Having read most of Maugham's short stories but none of his novels, I was taken aback by the sweep and passion of this book, its strong moral center, and above all its sensitivity to feeling. Other readers have called this a feminist work, and so in a halting way it is, in that Kitty Fane, its central character, is a woman and Maugham looks unusually deeply into her soul. But at the beginning of the book she is almost the polar opposite of feminist, having been brought up by her ambitious middle-class mother to be pretty and vapid and catch a good husband. It is only after she has passed through the climax of the story that she begins to see that there can be better goals in life for a woman.

My surprise at the depth of Maugham's portrayal of Kitty is in contrast to what I have always seen as the emotional reticence of his male characters, who are portrayed rather in terms of action than of feeling; I see this as a by-product of the author's homosexuality in an era when this had to be kept hidden. Kitty's husband, Walter Fane, a young government doctor and bacteriologist in Hong Kong, though presumably heterosexual, is almost a caricature of this repressed type. Although he obviously has feelings, he is almost incapable of giving voice to them, and neither he nor Kitty can effectively communicate with one another. It is hardly surprising that Kitty should fall into an affair with a married colonial official who is all easy charm. Even when Walter discovers their liaison (masterfully evoked in the opening pages of the book), he remains cold and inscrutable; his response is to volunteer for service in a cholera-ravaged city in the Chinese interior and to take Kitty with him.

As I say, I have not yet seen the movie, only the trailer.* But I was struck by how perfectly Edward Norton captures the cold correctness of Maugham's doctor; I am only surprised that this should have become a star role, since in the novel Maugham keeps Walter very much in the shadows. My other impression from the trailer, the expansive beauty of the Chinese landscape, is also strongly evoked in the book, though I suspect that the movie paints the horrors of the cholera epidemic on a larger canvas and makes more of the background of civil war, which is barely hinted at by Maugham. Instead, once the Fanes reach their destination, the novel takes on a more intimate quality, which slightly disappointed me by playing down the ever-present danger that surrounds them.

But the trade-off is that the emphasis can shift to Kitty's tentative spiritual journey. Maugham's title comes from the first line of an unfinished sonnet by Shelley, "Lift not the painted veil which those who live call Life," which implies a metaphysical intent. Here Maugham moves into territory that would later be claimed by Graham Greene; Kitty volunteers at an orphanage run by French nuns, and her first real lessons on life come from her exposure to these women so different from herself in faith and culture. By its mid-point, it seems that the novel is set to follow the familiar path of redemption through sacrifice.

And so it does, for a while. But Maugham, to his credit, does not go for the easy melodramatic conclusion. By a series of events that I cannot reveal here, the novel begins to retrace its steps and to wind down from its peak intensity. Kitty is forced not only to confront change, but to recognize in herself the ways in which she has NOT changed. Maugham risks anticlimax in taking this route, and perhaps does not avoid it entirely; but all the same it makes me respect him in a way that nothing else of his that I have read ever has.

[*I have now seen the movie on its first day of general release. It is handsome and well acted, but a very different experience from the book. The scenes in the Chinese interior have indeed been opened out as I surmised, and the character of Walter Fane much developed, moving into emotional territories only hinted at by Maugham. On the other hand, the earlier parts of the book are much compressed and the final sections omitted entirely. Perhaps the unusual shape of Maugham's novel would not have worked so well in movie terms, but it is still worth reading for that very reason.]

Good story. Great writing.

"The Painted Veil" is the beautifully told story of one self-absorbed woman and what it takes for her to discover joy in loving others. Every novel should have at least one character who changes and grows even half as much as this heroine. (Scene spoiler alert: My favorite scene is the last, when Kitty realizes she's always taken her father for granted, imagines how he must be feeling, and begins - finally - to treat him as a unique individual who has wants and needs separate from hers. When she can finally do this, their love is realized.)

I just saw the 2006 motion picture, and actually enjoyed it more than the book. The screenwriter enriched Somerset Maugham's classic in several ways: Kitty's husband Walter is given more depth such that his growth over the course of the story matches Kitty's. Also enriched is the backdrop. Not only is the Chinese town where much of the story takes place suffering a Cholera epidemic, but the Chinese Nationals are rising up against the British. This plot enhancement cranks up the tension of the story, and allows Walter's character to develop in a more complicated and ultimately satisfying way.

I highly recommend you read the book, then see the movie. You won't be disappointed!

Of marriage and freedom

The kernel of this novel dates back to 1895 when Maugham was twenty years old and stayed in Florence to learn Italian. He came across a story in which a "husband suspecting his wife of adultery and afraid on account of her family to put her to death, took her down to his castle in the Maremma the noxious vapours of which he was confident would do the trick; but she took so long to die that he grew impatient and had her thrown out of the window." It is around this core (which is not exactly the plot line of the novel, don't worry) that Maugham developed the story of Kitty Fane, a woman who is vain, superficial and in need of appreciation. It is a story that plays in Hong Kong and China in the 1920s. Maugham knew both places from his extensive travels in the South East but, characteristically for him, he does not spill much ink on descriptions of the landscape or the natives, which is a pity. He is much more interested in his fictitious characters.
As always, Maugham is a master of drawing characters who possess all the self-importance, weakness, and suffering that underlie human existence. His characterizations are so sardonically true that he was sued two times over the book by people in Hong Kong, and had to change the name of Hong Kong into Tching-Yen, and the name of one of the characters from Lane (innocent enough, one would think) to Fane.
I was wondering why this rather obscure novel by Maugham has received nothing but glowing five-star reviews by almost exclusively female readers. The reason is that this novel is about marriage and the restraints that marriage imposes upon passion. Also, it is a classic story of a woman's spiritual awakening. Two themes that appeal to female readers to such an extent that they tolerate Maugham's biting sarcasm and his rather unromantic view of life (he is quoted as saying that "habits in writing as in life are only useful if they are broken as soon as they cease to be advantageous"). If there is an author who is not touchy-feely, it is W. Somerset Maugham. Marriage, he soberly concludes, is a matter of convenience. Passion, on the other hand, is a matter of inconvenience: it lurks untamed behind "the painted veil which those who live call life". What is left? Faith? Maybe, I think Maugham would say, but most people are not humble enough to be truly religious ("no egoism is so insufferable as that of the Christian with regard to his soul" is another quote by the master).
"The Painted Veil" is well worth reading. However, it suffers a bit from Maugham's self-assured way of portraying people and constructing a plot. It is a well-told story, but it is not a first rate novel. I think the problem is that Maugham's characters in this book are too one-dimensional which works well in a comedy of manners, but not in a book that wants to discuss matters like love, passion, marriage, life and spiritual growth in a serious way.

They Called Him �€œMister Doctor�€

Janusz Korczak was a pediatrician who gave up a potentially lucrative practice to found an orphanage for the children he loved. And the children loved him; the nickname they gave their mentor was �€œMister Doctor.�€ In this book by the same title, his story is told from the perspective of one of the orphans�€”who could be any of the orphans or all the orphans.

The book opens with the last days in final period of the famous orphanage on Krochmalna Street; the Nazis invaded Warsaw on September 1, 1939, and shortly thereafter ordered the city�€™s Jewish population into the Warsaw Ghetto. The journey is one fraught with darkness and fear, as shown by the somber illustrations showing barbed wire. They walk past the house of horrors they know as the Black Palace. (I believe the author was referring to the infamous Pawiak Prison; I doubt the children actually passed that landmark, as it was on the opposite side of the Ghetto. However, the episode adds literary value to the narrative.) The horrors of the trek are in marked contrast to the soft, warm hands of Doctor Korczak and illustration of his favorite fairy tale character, Puss in Boots, bounding over a barbed blockade.

Their new home was the best Korczak could find, but �€œthe house of tears�€ at 33 Chlodna Street is clearly nothing like their beautiful old home; in one illustration, even the houseflies on the window sill are dead. Though flashbacks, the narrator recalls all the Old Doctor�€™s innovations: the children�€™s court, their newspaper, the bulletin board, postcards�€�. In the Ghetto, everyone clings to hope by celebrating their Jewish heritage and identity. Some children learn Hebrew. A professor teaches the children a poem, �€œBrothers,�€ by the great local poet, I.L Peretz, which they make into a song: �€œLight and dark, and in between/ All the colors come together./ We are all sisters and brothers/ From one father and one mother,/ And God created all of us./ The whole world is our nation. / We are all sisters and brothers.�€

The most poignant part of the life of Janusz Korczak is the final march, which has been remembered in diaries, poems, movies, and statues. Perhaps little Henryk�€™s canary wasn�€™t buried after all. Perhaps he flew up into the heavens.

Mister Doctor is a picture book, but with the amount of text on each page, it is more suitable for older children to read on their own. The illustrations are beautifully executed and complement the narrative perfectly. The book is a little pricey, but the quality of materials is exceptional; it is issued in a library binding. Clearly, this is a book to be kept and treasured. It is curious that Mister Doctor is also available as an e-book. I fear an electronic medium would not do justice to the work of art this book is. The title is noteworthy, as it is the same as the first Polish biography, the one written by Hanna Olczak, who knew Korczak and Madame Stefa personally. A two page biography of Janusz Korczak puts the narrative in perspective; that, along with a short bibliography, will help students doing a book report�€”or a report on Mister Doctor himself, to pass his legend on.

Excellent, a must read!

Dr. Korczak is Mr. doctor. Mr. Doctor lives on the top floor of an orphanage for Jewish children. He ran the orphanage in a way that was considered revolutionary. The children rule themselves. Why did Mr. Doctor do this? Why did the children agree to do it? Amazingly, the children do. Mr. Doctor also gives the children different cards, one for doing good, one for memories (a way to remember a special experience) etc. When the Nazis come and take the orphans to the ghetto, Mr. Doctor decides to make it fun by having the children pretend they are a circus parade. When it is time to leave the ghetto, the good Mr. Doctor goes with them rather than accepting the opportunity to live. Why?

This true story is amazing. It grabs you as you read. The author writes this simply but elegantly. You are drawn into it also by the excellent illustrations. I finished the book with my heart fully engaged as it is a sad but necessary book to read so we do not forget the horror of the Nazis.

Good Book to Intro Kids to the Holocaust

Written in a story format and told from the point of view of one of the children, Mister Doctor is the story of Janusz Korczak and his orphans during WWII. Even though he was famous, he still chose to stay with his young charges to their ultimate end. Mister Doctor is aimed at students in the lower grades. The drawings and sketches effectively show the dreary reality that the children lived in with stunning artistry. Janusz Korczak was and is famous in his native Poland as a writer, military doctor, and champion of children. It is great that he can become known elsewhere.

About the Author

Allen Angel received his BS and MS in mathematics from SUNY at New Paltz. He completed additional graduate work at Rutgers University. He taught at Sullivan County Community College and Monroe Community College, where he served as chairperson of the Mathematics Department. He served as Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation at Rutgers University for the summers of 1967 - 1970. He was President of The New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC). He also served as Northeast Vice President of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). Allen lives in Palm Harbor, Florida but spends his summers in Penfield, New York. He enjoys playing tennis and watching sports. He also enjoys traveling with his wife Kathy.

 

Christine Abbott received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from SUNY Brockport and her graduate degree in mathematics education from Syracuse University. Since then she has taught mathematics at Monroe Community College and has recently chaired the department. In her spare time she enjoys watching sporting events, particularly baseball, college basketball, college football, and the NFL. She also enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and reading

 

Dennis Runde has a BS degree and an MS degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin--Platteville and Milwaukee respectively. He has a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of South Florida. He has been teaching for more than fifteen years at State College of Florida–Manatee-Sarasota and for almost ten years at Saint Stephen's Episcopal School. Besides coaching little league baseball, his other interests include history, politics, fishing, canoeing, and cooking. He and his wife Kristin stay busy keeping up with their three sons--Alex, Nick, and Max.

Really LIKE this textbook.

It has been many years since I had to take a math class from my previous degree. With my career change, I had to take a college level class since they felt my previous algebra class was more of an intermediate class. This book was required for my college. I have to say - I REALLY like this book. It has made math very easy to pick back up again. We are not doing all the chapters in the book, but it has been really good at explaining the concepts, demonstrating how to get to the answers with many examples and then having practice exercises to do.

I don't know if it is because I have had college math in the past, but I think this textbook did an excellent job in clarifying how and why you perform a problem.

There were some problems that there were incomplete instructions. For example, Chapter 3: Logic, example 6. This was an example of an argument with 3 premises using a Truth Table. I had understood everything up until then. I even got most of the truth table done, BUT there were no instructions on what to do with the table results from the added third premise. Which column do I take to complete the truth table argument with the consequent, since there are three premises in the antecedent? It's like it is missing a step in explaining what to do with the third antecedent to complete the equation.

I also found a gap in my understanding in the Statistics chapter dealing with normal curves and deviations (Chapter 13.7). For some reason I could not "get" the higher level concepts and had a little trouble understanding parts of it. This was not necessarily the textbook, but my own mental block. ;-)

Overall I really liked the book. I think there were those couple of issues I noticed. My nephew is in 9th grade and I think I will pass it on to him to help him with areas he is having some challenges because it explains most concepts so well.

Math Concepts Very Well Explained

First let me say that I am not a math major. I purchased this book because the textbook that is required for the liberal arts math course I am enrolled in does not go into enough detail on how to work out the problems. I once took an algebra class that required a textbook by author Allen R. Angel --- and I recalled that the way the book was written made it very easy to understand the equations. I correctly assumed that A Survey of Mathematics would be as equally helpful since Angel is one of the co-authors of the book---- and I was correct! This book is excellent because it explains the concepts in an easy-to-understand language as well going into step by step detail on how to work out the problems. I highly recommend it!

Very good book for advanced part modeling

I believe this to be the best SolidWorks book for advanced part modeling currently available on the market. This is a good and informative book aimed at the intermediate/expert SolidWorks user.

A good understanding of SolidWorks is required to get the most from this book.

The book covers all the advanced features available in SolidWorks in detail and where it can it tells you where you would use a particular feature.

The title is self explanatory. This book is primarily aimed at people that do consumer product design where appearance and smooth surfaces are required.

The only reason I gave this book 4 stars is because I believe there is always room to make things better. That said, this is my best SolidWorks book yet.

High quality and unique

This is the only book like it I have found available anywhere for SolidWorks. It is better than the surfacing book for Rhino because of the detail of data. What I like most about this book is that it explains why things work or even why they don't work. This is important for real users. Its definitely not a beginners book, but I've been using SW for about 3 years, having used Pro/ENGINEER in another job for several years, and all of the concepts were understandable. The book shows the strengths and flaws of SolidWorks for surfacing work. This book is in color with good quality paper, better than the Solidworks 2009 Bible by the same author (black and white and printed on thin paper).

One thing I found interesting was that it is grouped into different sections,one for just explaining features, another for showing examples of what features can do, and the last section for showing general techniques consisting of several features, like how to make smooth end caps, or fading a sharp edge into a smooth face, and some wacky stuff too. It does a good job of showing a wide range of techniques.

I think if you really do work like this, you will learn much from this book. If you are a casual SolidWorks user, it may be too much work to understand it.

Michael McDowell (1950-1999) is best known for his screenplays to the films Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas, but he was also the author of several excellent and underrated Southern Gothic horror novels, of which The Amulet (1979) was the first. Originally published as a pulp paperback, now scarce and long out-of-print, McDowell’s grimly humorous and delightfully horrific novel returns to print in this edition, which features a new introduction by Poppy Z. Brite.

The first novel of Michael McDowell; unsung American author.

"The Amulet", first published in 1979, was Michael McDowell's first paperback original. It set the pace for what was to be a marvelous career, including several other novels, such as "Cold Moon Over Babylon", "The Elementals", "Katie", "Gilded Needles" and the successful serial novel "Blackwater", to which Stephen King gives credit as his main inspiration for the "Green Mile" series.
Also, as a footnote, Michael McDowell was the creator of the screenplay and characters of the hugely successful "Beetlejuice" movie.
Set in the summer of 1965, at the dawn of the Vietnam war, this is the haunting story of a sleepy southern town called Pine Cone, and what went on there... After her husband is the casualty of a bizarre accident, young Sarah Howell slowly comes to realize that her strange, treacherous mother-in-law, is somehow behind an infernal plan of revenge.
Slowly, as a pendant in a gold chain passes from hand to hand, citizens of the town begin to die in horrid, violent ways. What is behind this? What leads a loving mother to set her children and home on fire? A dutiful policeman to turn against his wife? A friend against the other?... as the body count rises, Sarah must run against time to stop the accursed amulet... but slowly it seems to be finding her way to her.
Michael McDowell passed away on December 27, 1999. He was a lecturer at Tufts college, a Harvard Graduate and a Brandeis Ph.D... He will be sorely missed on account of his books, wickedly funny, consistently written and beautifully plotted. His characters stay with the reader even long after finishing the book. It's too bad he has been overlooked by many a horror and literature fan, for this si the real stuff... Horror as Modern Literature.

Micheal McDowell introduced me into the world of horror! You see one side of the house was reading the GoodBook everyday and the other side of the house had stacks and stacks of paperback novels of horror. So, I snuck the book out of my mother's extensive collection and was thrown into a completely different realm. In 1979, this was the first horror book I ever read and I was 14 yrs old. I couldn't put it down then and I can't now, often sometimes comparing his great writing to the new horror authors out there now......

The moment I started reading I was hooked. His writing flowed seamlessly and he was always capable of placing you right into the story itself. You got lost in his world! Every character in this book ends up being connected through an evil, cursed, "chain" of events. It eventually comes full circle in this small town, to it's original owner. A wicked mother out for vengeance for her son............

Needless to say I own all of Micheal McDowell's books and have read them all. All his books were excellent, but my favorite's will always be this one and "The Elementals".......

Sadly, this great author and screenwriter passed away in 1999. I feel he never got a chance to fully achieve the status that other great masters of horror writing did! I have a good friend that's trying to break into horror world, so I found an excellent copy on Amazon, he is 26 yrs and wanted to read the classics. It's very hard to find a copy of any of his books and it takes a lot of searching!! All this author's books are out of print, they are priceless!!!!!

Couldn't stop reading it.

I loved the book. I read so much about Michael McDowell from other reviews and I figured I'd give him a go, and he sure doesn't disappoint. The Amulet was relatively short only 340 pages, but it read as if it had so much more vastness. The story of a cursed Amulet that makes its way to person to unrelated person and they in turn kill those around them, sounds hokey, but McDowell makes it plausible with great set ups and back grounds of the characters. The story moves along at a great pace never boring and never slow it is just right, almost as if every sentence and chapter were worded with great skill and construction. The chapters were short concise, and to the point, which made reading that much more enjoyable. Why this story was never made into a great film is beyond me, since it was so compelling a story. As one set of people died and the Amulet moved on, I couldn't wait to see what will happen next, and how their method of death will be explained. Michael McDowell has a very good way of detailing the deaths and he really surprises us by not pulling any punches by killing people that many would say was unexpected, but it works. I first heard of this writer, after I read Duma Key by Stephen King. Someone is a review said that Duma Key was similar to a novel by McDowell called The Elementals, but only that much better. I later learned that Stephen King admired McDowell's work. King's Wife Tabitha even finished McDowell's last novel after his untimely death. With that said i figured he must be a good writer. I went out and purchased all of his known novels, I have Cold Moon over Babylon, The Elementals and The Black Water series complete, so I am really eager to get to his next story, I am glad I can keep such a great writer's memory alive.

Really Helped Out

Great for a car trip!

Being a hyper active parent I try to provide educational material for my 10 year old to read when we take long car trips. I first found the Gardner book on cyphers but some of the cyphers in later chapters he had trouble doing. Rather than have him get discouraged and give up I looked for additional material to help him out. Then I found this book. Whats great is that if he gets stuck, he can just look up the solution! Its perhaps more fun to do the cyphers with him but that's not always possible. That's when this book becomes essential.

And for such a cheap price, it's an easy choice to make.
