Modern Inertial Technology

This book has the potential of being extremely useful; certainly it is an ambitions book. In the discussions of the mechanical gyros the disertation flows fairly well. However, once into the optical gyros, the result is just about worthless. The Sagnac Effect is the basis for all optical gyros such as the ring laser and the fibre optic gyro. The discussion of this effect is just about useless. It is virtually impossible to see how one equation follows from the preceding equation. The fringe shift from two interfering beams which rotate in opposite direction is the basis of all optical gyros, but the discussion in Lawrence's book is little more than hand waving. In other words, if the reader has a background in optical physics, then the discussion makes some sense. However, the book must be judged upon its own merits and here I think it fails miserably. So I would recommend the book for the discussion of mechanical gyros but as an introduction to optical gyros I would recommend that the reader look elsewhere.

Sykes has the advantage of having known Evelyn Waugh while he was still alive, and is therefore able to illustrate many events of his life with personal anecdotes as opposed to merely relying on facts which anybody could discover if they put their minds to it. In spite of this, Sykes is not blind to Waugh's faults; he is not afraid to criticise his works, or indeed the man himself, which makes for a well balanced picture of him. Fortunately not too much time is spent on describing Waugh's time at war; the main focus throughout is his novels and his personal life, and so we are not left with hundreds of pages describing every single campaign he was involved in. Sykes tells only what is necessary to understand the person he is writing about. The only issue I have with this biography is that the early years are somewhat glossed over, as Waugh's autobiography covers this time period. This means that for someone like me (who hasn't yet read A Little Learning, but fully intends to one day), there are gaps in the tale. Evelyn Waugh clearly led an interesting life, though, and this biography certainly does him justice.

Can A Close Friend Write A Good Biography?

Pace Anthony Powell, I think Sykes' bio of Waugh is too partial to its subject to stand as good biography.

It should have been called "record of a friendship" or some such.

On the other hand, it's a great read and should be devoured by any and all who admire Waugh.

A great 'life'

I used to be able to read and enjoy fiction, mostly the "classics"" from Hemmingway, Steinbeck, Graham Greene and of course, I read much that was written by the talented Waugh family. Novels that were often considered very important and generated profound discussions and critical essays examining their fictional characters, themes and supposed values. I found parts of Christopher Sykes wonderful biography of Evelyn Waugh mildly pretentious, but amusing - I scribbled penciled notes to myself on several paragraphs ..."Why is fiction given such profound study and respect?"...In the closing chapter of this deeply researched and affectionate book Sykes wrote; "..with the completion of the trilogy Evelyn's career as a serious writer of fiction came to an end."
I saw a contradiction in that sentence. Novels then, are all to be considered `serious' - or just the novelist? Evelyn was hilarious, uproariously rude, pedantic, dogmatic, deeply religious, prudish and a true English eccentric. I enjoyed this portrait of his talented wit, courage and privileged life. It seems amazing that simultaneously there were so many great authors in England - craftsmen Evelyn called them, like himself - the entire Greene family, Connolly, J B Priestly and Somerset Maugham, Orwell, Morton, Betjeman ... this wealth of art is the reason I suppose that fiction was and is given such respect.
But in closing his most enjoyable biography Christopher Sykes writes that "Evelyn's anti-reviewer goading may strike some readers as petty." This reader was so stuck .. then the next sentence offered me reassurance that my questioning and doubting on the importance given to novels is not unique ..."It is to do with the long-surviving notion (against which Jane Austen's strictures have had no effect) that fiction is essentially trivial.
This is a wonderful life about a great character, written with style and structured to present interesting descriptions of both the author and his craftsmanship.

Good little book

I gave this three stars because I wished it went into more detail, but it is a free book and seemed to entice the reader into buying the author's other works. That said, I did enjoy this book because it restated what most people already know about motivation but also have some tips on actually harnessing will power and keeping motivation high. I did like the concept of the thirty day challenge and making smaller, achievable goals to keep you motivated and stay on track. Being an "all or nothing" girl, I'm going to try this concept first and also figure out my needs as discussed in the book. If "baby steps" get me there then that's what I'm willing to do since the way I've been doing things isn't really working.

Motivation for Over 40

I've been struggling with my weight for about six years. When I hit my forties the weight distribution changed. My eating habits changed and my energy level diminished. I have fat rolls around my mid section that I've never had in my life. The whole idea of needing to lose weight and get into shape makes me angry. I think, how am I going to lose this 50 pounds as fast as I can and get back to my normal life.

After reading this I've just realized this is my normal life now. It's just time to make a small adjustment or two.

I enjoyed this book, however, she needs someone to help her edit this book. There quite a few grammatical errors throughout the book as well as some places where you could definitely tell a word was missing from the sentence. I kept thinking 'did she even bother to look over this book for errors?' because there were some spots that were very obvious that something was wrong. My only other qualm is that the ending was a HEA, it felt very abrupt because they have a scene with the parents and it was pretty much like "if you don't like it, oh well" and then "The End". That made it feel like the author was in a hurry to get the book done so she just wrote something real quick to end it. Even if she wanted to end the book with being confronted by the parents, I think it could've been better executed with maybe the confrontation first and perhaps a small prolog ie. For instance, 2 months later. Other than those 2 things, I enjoyed the book.

Left me wanting more, in a good way - J.L. brought to life amazing characters who drew me in with their banter and passion for each other. I loved being a part of the characters development into the nature strong individuals you felt they had beneath the surface. I can't wait for more!

Waited for this book and sorry it took me so long to get it done Jl beck. Love her books and everyone I read I love her more and more. At first it seemed like it was going to be slow but damn it heated up real fast. I can't wait for her next read. It's a hot hot hot
