NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED

Having read Mary, Mary I could not wait to get my hands on another of her books. Oh dear, this one really disappointed me. It seemed to drag somewhat. Her characters are well rounded and very real, but Adam and his cold savagery left me shaking with fear. Maybe that's why I couldn't wait to finish it.

About the Author
Robert H. Schneider, M.D., F.A.C.C., is director of the Institute for Natural Medicineand Prevention at Maharishi University of Management. An Unusually Broad Approach to a Healthy Heart

The scope of this book is remarkable. Thanks to Dean Ornish and others, many people now understand that lifestyle choices are very important in maintaining a healthy heart and can play a role in treating heart disease. Dr. Schneider goes further. His approach includes meditation, Vedic sounds, architecture, Vedic Astrology, and more.

And in his chapters about lifestyle choices, Dr. Schneider gets unusually specific. He talks about the ayurvedic concept of body types. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach to diet, for example, he explains that the best diet for a person depends on his or her body type. He explains that obesity -- a major risk factor for heart disease -- can be caused by different kinds of imbalances in the physiology depending on body type. And therefore the treatment of obesity must match the type of imbalance in the individual. He helps readers identify their body type and gives considerable detail in regard to the types of foods they should favor or avoid according to body type.

Overall, he sees the body as a sort of fine-tuned instrument. He explains how it can get out of tune and a range of ways to fix it, to fix the imbalances that crop up and cause disease. Further, he understands that this finely tuned instrument isn't isolated but has an intimate connection with the universe. And he even discusses techniques such as Vedic Astrology to help understand and treat imbalances in the physiology.

He undergirds each of the approaches he describes with a scientist's analysis of how it works.

Right On The Mark

In this pill popping and cholesterol obsessed age of ours, here is a timely book showing how defusing stress with meditation and other time tested techniques prevent and heal heart problems. I know this approach works. Years ago, my doctor wanted to put me on medication for high blood pressure. Wary of side effects, I looked for something natural and found Transcendental Meditation. Within a month or two, my pressure had normalized, and has stayed normal for 30 years with continued regular meditation. At a recent checkup, my blood pressure read 120/60. Not bad for a kid, let alone a 69 year old.
The fact is that stress causes or aggravates a lot of the chronic health problems that our medical system has little success treating. The book rolls out an impressive volume of scientific studies to support how simple methods from an ancient tradition has significant medical relevance in the 21st century. The meditation technique is so valid, in fact, that the National Institutes of Health continues to fund ongoing research, as the authors indicate.
The power of the techniques described in this book goes way beyond heart health, to happiness, relationships, productivity, and quality of life. If more people practiced these techniques, instead of popping pills, the collective health of this country would surely rise from its present sorry state, and health care costs wouldn't take such a massive bite out of the American economy.

I can hardly believe I am the first person to review this great book.

I attended Dr. Jonsen's presentation at the Founders of Bioethics Conference at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. As a complete novice to ethics, I was very impressed by the way he presented the facts of a case, engaged the ethical dilemma, and detailed the relevant ethical principles that led to a resolution. This book is no different.

The book is arranged into a series of questions under four topics: Medical Indications (the appropriate treatment given the patient's medical problem), Patient Preferences (patient autonomy, decisional capacity, prior declaration of preferences, surrogate decision-making), Quality of Life (especially the disconnect between a patient's self-reported quality of life and that judged by an outside agent such as the doctor or family member), and Contextual Features (the impact of family members, insurance companies, social health policy, religion, etc). The end of each chapter also includes a few notes about pediatric cases with references to other works for more in-depth coverage.

In the process of answering the five to ten broad questions under each of the Four Topics, the authors present a plethora of cases (both real and constructed) designed to reinforce the understanding of the ethical principles involved, showcase how a small change in details can change the resolution of an ethical dilemma, and challenge the reader to resolve the issues. The cases are set apart from the text by the use of a blue font, making them easy to find. Each case is followed by a Commentary wherein the authors elucidate the issues at hand and a Resolution detailing their conclusion for the case.

The book is replete with citations to other reference works, including text books, legal cases, web sites, and journal articles in the ethics or medical community. Fortunately, they are grouped at the end of each short section so as not to interrupt the text while reading (making the book friendlier for on-the-spot use) and to present the relevant citations immediately adjacent to the subject of concern. The book is also exhaustively indexed so you can quickly find the information you need by page number as well as section number.

As noted in the subtitle, this book is intended for physicians practicing clinical medicine. However, I, as a pharmacy student, have still found the book to be well worth my time and money for explaining and exploring the issues that arise in the practice of medicine.

The One Idispensible Guide

Jonson and Winslade have provided us with the one indispensible guide to hospital biomedical ethics. I have served on three ethics committees since 1982, and have taught hospital biomedical ethics to physicians, nurses and clergy, This text is universally appreciated for its clarity, lucidity and authority. To attempt the discipline without this text is to be less than completely competent.

too much padding

The book has some useful information, but does not

go beyond the very basic. In light of this, it is

annoying that so much space is taken up with repeated

samples of the same code, and with more screen shots

than are needed. I've encountered this before in one

of Mr. Holzner's books (XML Complete), and I have to

wonder if this is done to pad the book to a length

that justifies the cost.

Somewhat basic for a cookbook...

A recent addition to my Eclipse library has been Eclipse Cookbook by Steve Holzner (O'Reilly). It works well for my level of expertise at the package, but experienced users might find it lacking...

Chapter list: Basic Skills; Using Eclipse; Java Development; Refactoring, Building, and Launching; Testing and Debugging; Using Eclipse in Teams; Eclipse and Ant; SWT: Text, Buttons, Lists and Nonretangular Windows; SWT: Dialogs, Toolbars, Menus, and More; SWT: Coolbars, Tab Folders; Trees, and Browsers; JSP, Servlets, and Eclipse; Creating Plug-ins: Extension Points, Actions, and Menus; Creating Plug-ins: Wizards, Editors, and Views; Index

Like all O'Reilly cookbooks, this follows the standard formula. A problem is presented, a short two or three line solution is given, and then there's a discussion and fuller explanation of the answer. There are plenty of screen shots and coding examples to help you through each of the recipes.

Overall, the book will benefit new and intermediate users. The author covers quite a few of the features of Eclipse that make it so powerful, like refactoring, running the debugger, and other various tasks. You may know that these exist but not know how to use them, or you just may be ignorant of the fact that they even exist. In that sense, it's really good. The SWT portion seems to be more centered on programming with Eclipse as a secondary focus. Maybe because it's because I don't do SWT development, but it just seemed to be a bit out of place. The material also seems to be pretty basic for a cookbook. Usually the recipes are more beyond the basics and get into things that aren't quite as intuitive as they might be.

This will help me get up to speed on Eclipse, and I do like the book. I'm just not sure it's for everyone...

After getting used to the fundamentals of the Java programming language, a versatile integrated development environment like Eclipse would bring developers to next level of productivity, and Eclipse Cookbook is handy for the start. Readers are guided step-by-step with numerous illustrations about its support for tasks from creating packages, classes, methods to refactoring, and debugging. The book demonstrates Eclipse 2.1.2 with the difference of early release of version 3.0 being mentioned. Now when versions 3.0.1 and 3.1M are readily available, you might need to resort to online help for the exact updated steps. You will find the use of application programming interface of platform dependent SWT for building GUI with both AWT and Swing being mixed. However, it gets nothing to do with the drag-and-drop style of building graphical components. Web development is included but too concise. No elaborated features like performance profiling or modeling tool of round-trip development are described. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to introduce to target audience with various commonly referred plug-ins on tasks like integrating with different kinds of version control, validating XML, modeling UML, and J2EE support.

Fantastic!

I would consider myself as psychic as a housebrick,but I called up a eudaemon and a kakodaemon and even though I could not see them I could and can feel their prescence.I have already had very interesting experiences that surprised the beejeesus out of me.Creating a daemonic companion is incredibly powerful and deceptivly easy.Try it!Update 13/01/16: This magick gets stronger the more of a relationship you build with your Daemons,I found that acknowledging their prescence and showing appreciation(not servility) really brings this magick into focus, I suppose it's like having a friend,you appreciate your friend,enjoy their company and the friendship grows stronger, but if you were to ignore your friend your relationship would,inevitably, deteriorate. Baal Kadmon is a very reliable guide on the path of Magick.

Excellent Read

So far, so good.. I done one if the rituals a week ago, I didn't see nor hear the spirit, but I felt a very strong energy presence with me, and have noticed I now have a shadow following me around and some random thoughts come to mind to help me with gaining my goals, I look forward to buying more of Baal Kadmon books here soon, thank you Mr.Kadmon for your writings

Unbelievable, it works!

I did one of the rituals in this book and it worked! It was hopeless what I was asking for but I built a strong relationship with the Daemon and I got what I wanted. Baal Kadmon is an amazing author!
