Fantastic...A fun read with practical solutions

FANTASTIC, what a great book to discover what this Theory of Baggage all about. The context of the book is written under the genre of self-help.

It has an amazing method to provide ideas that move me. First, I fell in love with Samantha after the third chapter because essentially, she is me, you, and all of us wrapped up in a tidy package. Next, every single chapter I reflected on the stories how they blended lessons of life to the reality of the world I live in. I didn’t feel like I was being preached to in terms of motivation or the traditional self-help book.

I also appreciate the author taking this book one-step further, that includes giving back to both the reader, and our community in the form of worksheet downloads and charity. I won’t mention my equity analysis, but not good, so TOB effort is needed. For the price of this book, I can imagine the vast time and energy it took to research and compile for the reader a story that warmed my heart, made me laugh, a few tears, and opened my mind to TOB.

Interestingly, the music association with each chapter was creative, and I found a great connection to provide me personal meaning. Bottom line, I'm sharing this book with my friends since everyone can use a dose of Samantha in our relationships and day-to-day well-being.

It made me think about getting off the couch and doing something about my life instead of whining like the Work Vampire chapter

Here is what motivated me and I valued about this book. It made me think about getting off the couch and doing something about my life instead of whining like the Work Vampire chapter. Reading the book it captured me just as the author mentioned, I would step into Samantha’s shoes. After several chapters, I felt the author was talking to me directly and I connected with the story. As an avid reader, I realize the author was slowly shifting my perspective with the Duh Moments. Then just at the right point, the entire book (TOB) came into focus and I had to put down the book for a couple days. I realized I need to face my own baggage and stop avoiding it like the plague. Overall, great book, easy to read, and full of misadventures that made me smile and laugh. Thank you Samantha for writing a book like this, I'm passing it along to several of my friends since they needs the same dose.

A most provocative book, to say the least! When I was unclear about something, I went to a reliable source. My girlfriend. Sorry ladies, but she gave me the secret decoder ring. Now I know so much more that I could have really used when I was younger. Better late than never. Highly recommended.

A book for busy executives that need to start working smarter

Dermot Crowley is clearly one of the world's experts when it comes to personal productivity in the modern workplace. Not only does Smart Work display a depth of knowledge it is articulated in a way that is clear, concise and easy to follow. It seems that so many technology books these days are based in theory when what busy executives really need is simple, practical advice. Through both the case studies and the simple tool tips at the end of each chapter it is easy to see that Crowley has written this to help people take meaningful action.

If I had one criticism for the book it would be that it doesn't go far enough. With so many other digital tools now available it would be great to see Crowley's thoughts on some of the emerging opportunities such as CRM (he mentions some of these briefly but doesn't go into a lot of detail). That being said it is clearly written for an executive audience and is focused on the tools that they are likely to be already using...and perhaps some of the emerging stuff is being saved for the next book.

The easiest way form new productivity habits

One of the things I've always struggled with in managing my time and productivity, is that the methodologies (while they are brilliant) just feel too overwhelming to implement and turn into habit. I've been following Dermot's newsletter since early 2015, and always taken practical inspiration from his ideas on productivity. So this new book of his couldn't have come too soon. It's filled with how-to, but it's absolutely not overwhelming. I think Dermot must have deeply studied and immersed himself in all the possible ways to manage productivity, and his gift is being able to draw the essential goodness from it all, and share it with us in probably the easiest way form new productivity habits that serve not only our use of time but the value we extract from it. Thank you Dermot!

You might think these other reviews are exagerating. They're NOT! This book is absurd...

If you ever wanted a a fancy three letter acronym behind your name, then go wherever this bozo went--cause they are obviously handing them out on a whim. And if you ever want to get published, just take Jack's manuscript from "The Shining" and this "LawTech Publishing" will apparently publish it, and won't even both to EDIT IT!!!

This is BY FAR the WORST, most poorly organized, most repetitive, worst spelled, most poorly edited, most unscholarly text I have ever read, period. If this author wants to publish a book in english, well, he ought to learn the rules of grammar first.

You will read this book with a constant headache, as you have to reread passages over and over just to try and make sense from them. You will have a constant sense of deja vu as he repeats the same tired phrases OVER AND OVER, in random places. You will crawl away after punishing yourself by reading a chapter, feeling that although you were victorious, it just wasn't worth it... The fact that this is a required text for any class is OBSCENE, and it is the only reason that even a single copy of it has been sold.

It's a headache in a brick paperback

Nothing different than the consensus. I feel like this guy got his doctorate from a Cracker Jack box... because he's a crackpot, get it? But also because whatever university gave him that piece of paper clearly never make him take an English writing class. It's a painfully frustrating read. Terribly written book by an equally inconsistent and illogical teacher.

Clarification: I find the subject matter really fascinating, and obviously Valdez has some really great insight in this issue, but he really shouldn't be allowed to write in any official capacity.

The book was received in great condition and very quickly. However, this book is horribly written. There is very poor organization, grammar, spelling and punctuation. At 500 pages long, the first 2 chapters are the entire first half of the book. (Just an example of the poor organization.) I cannot believe any college professor would use this as a course textbook.

About the Author
Charles H. Christiansen, EdD, OTR, OT(C), FAOTA
Charles H. Christiansen, EdD, OTR, OT(C), FAOTA is the George T. Bryan Distinguished Professor and Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He earned his Occupational Therapy degree from the University of North Dakota in 1970 and later received an MA in Counseling Psychology from Ball State University. He received his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Houston in 1979. He became a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) in 1983 and served as treasurer from 1986 to 1989. He was elected Vice-President in 2003. He was awarded the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship in 1999. He is the founding editor of OTJR: Occupation, Participation and Health. Dr. Christiansen is interested in health promotion and the contribution of occupations to health, well-being, and quality of life. He is an active member of the Society for the Study of Occupation: USA and other international occupational science societies.
Carolyn M. Baum, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Carolyn M. Baum, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA is the Elias Michael Director and Professor of Occupational Therapy and Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Baum has served as President of the AOTA and is the current president, and President of the American Occupational Therapy Certification Board (now NBCOT). She served on the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research at the National Institute of Health and the Institute of Medicine’ s Committee to Assess Rehabilitation Science and Engineering Needs. In those capacities, she contributed toreports to Congress. Dr. Baum’ s research is on the relationship of occupation and participation in older persons with chronic neurological diseases. She is editor of OTJR: Occupation, Participation and Health and consistently contributes to scholarly journals and text books.
Julie Bass-Haugen, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Julie Bass-Haugen, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA is a professor and chair of the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the College of St. Catherine. She received her BS in Occupational Therapy from the University of Minnesota and her MA and PhD in Educational Psychology— Statistics and Research Methods from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Bass-Haugen’ s expertise and interests include motor behavior, occupation and health, and research methods in occupational therapy. She has authored chapters on the occupational therapy task-oriented approach in Trombly’ s Occupational Therapy for Physical Dysfunction and has made numerous presentations to national and international audiences. Dr. Bass-Haugen has also served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy.

This book is boring.

Enjoy spending hours of your life pondering the definition of a single word? You will love this book. Otherwise it is boring, and delves far too deeply into the meaning of the word "occupation." Let's just choose a definition and move on with our lives. With every sentence you can feel the authors trying to justify their careers.

Looked poorly photocopied!!!!

In all my years of college, I've never had a book that had such poor printing quality. I am in a graduate OT program and my fellow students have a completely different looking book. Their book has crisp, clear photos, light green headings, and colorful chapters. My book, looks like it was copied on a really old copy machine from the early 1900's. The colors are smeared, the photos are distorted and very, very, very, blurry, and the headings are blurry and blotchy. I contacted the publisher, Prenhall/Pearson, to notify them of the problem. They were absolutely unhelpful and didn't care that this type of book was on the market with their name on it. Amazon.com has done an excellent job in trying to replace my book (as well as my best friend's), but they've yet been able to find a "real" one. They've done their best. My book and my fellow student's are the same edition, by the way.

As far as the text, it's simplistic and basic for a Master's level book. I haven't learned much from this particular book. If I were the author or publisher, I would be really embarrassed to have my name on book with such poor print quality.

it doesn't have any color, and all the pictures are blurred because it is suppose to be colored.. I tried to look at it in a textbook bookstore and they all have color.... is it legal???
I got it from amazon not the marketplace.

About the Author

Simon Unwin was born in Yorkshire in 1952, but grew up in Wales. He studied in Chelsea School of Art, London, and then the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff, where he went on to do his PhD and become a senior lecturer. He has also lived in Australia, and taught architecture in the USA, Scandinavia, the Middle East and the Far East. He is currently Professor at the University of Dundee.

Simply the best!

I have just gone through the first three chapters of this book and find myself compelled to write this review. I can simply say it is the best and a MUST to everyone in the field of architecture. Students, teachers, and practitioners alike will all find inspirations from this book.

The author has successfully decoded almost every aspect of architectural composition. The price is cheaper considering the knowledge from the contents though it could have been affordable to many had it be less than 25 dollars, preferably 20. The contents are as well very intellectually researched and organized.

Great content and organisation.

In terms of content,this book was just what I need at this time. I found the abstract concepts taken up to be well and clearly explored. A constant theme runs through this third edition by virtue of reading and analysis being positioned as adjuncts to experience. I loved the drawings: to me they were simple, elegant and an essential part of the exposition: nothing redundant here!

In terms of layout, I found the relatively small font challenging. I am persisting though: because of the content.

Welcome to the first page, the first day of college, and my first tip.

There are a lot of firsts happening here-first time possibly away from home, first time possibly living with a stranger, first college class, first college professors, first college hookup, first love, first loss, first time possibly having sex (or not having it, or just hearing other people have it), maybe your first pregnancy scare, first sexually transmitted infection (also called sexually transmitted disease), first time seeing people use drugs, first time borrowing thousands of dollars and first time spending thousands of dollars, first time having to make choices on your own, first time staying out all night, first time having to make a new life for yourself, and the first time when you can do as much as you want or as little as you want and have no one to answer to but you (assuming you don't answer your phone).

Naturally, the first time you do something, it's normal to not be completely comfortable doing it. Comfort takes time. So understand that it will take time to find your comfortable places in college. Be who you are, not who people want you to be (or who you think people want you to be). Focus on what you want, not on being wanted. Work to find what you love to do inside and outside the classroom. Create a world filled with options-socially, academically, and spiritually. Don't wait for people to give you your college experience. Create it. Make it happen. And along the way, appreciate that no matter what happens, no matter what you're feeling, no matter what obstacles you encounter-you are never alone. You are surrounded by people who can listen, support, and guide you. As someone who has lived it, seen it, and heard about it in my advice column and from students on college campuses around the world, I can tell you: it's a fact. You are never alone in college.

As one resident director and recent graduate said to me, "They always say that college students deal with the same issues, but until I was a resident director, I never realized it was true. So many people are going through the same things, but don't know it." Each day is unpredictable. You never know what's going to come your way. That's part of the wild ride. In the words of an advisor I interviewed, "In college, you can have the best day of your life and the worst day of your life-and all within the same hour."

Great Grad Gift

Bought as a gift for my daughter who leaves for college this fall. She's not really one to read for pleasure but she said she couldn't put this book down! Lots of helpful advice and really put her fears to rest. She said she feels ready for college now and feels like she can handle anything.

Classic book on the realities of RW. Recommend its reading and rereading by all officers and NCO's

Was glad that I read and studied the original Street Without Joy before my first tour in Vietnam. Understanding the lessons of the French and Viet Minh save my bacon more that once. On my first tour on the way to Plei Me, we avoided a classic ambush by having an observation OH-13 accompany us. A luxury the French did not have. On my second tour in the same battalion, knowing the siege tactics practiced by the VC (the old VM) we were able to crush the attack on Dak Seang. Never understood why the lessons learned by the French were not taught in US Army schools.

Bernard Fall Still Relevant

Even though Fall wrote about a war even farther removed in history than the American War in Vietnam, his insights are still incredibly valuable. His feel for the Vietnamese people coupled with his knowledge of French customs and operations is fascinating. In review, Fall's work holds up extremely well.

Indispensable

Nobody should begin to try to understand the catastrophe that U.S. involvement in Vietnam (& indeed in Laos & Cambodia) became without first reading Bernard B. Fall's 'Street Without Joy'. Many of America's generals read it, but as events show, they didn't understand it or take its lessons to heart.
Fall's account of the French Union Forces' experience in Southeast Asia is gritty, down-to-earth, fearless, & accurate. He went beyond the official communiques & press releases, beyond the brief of the usual war correspondents of the French Indochina War & thus, into 'Street Without Joy', Fall perspicaciously packed wealth of detail & nuance.
'Street Without Joy' is a bit dated in lexicon (but this latest edition contains an apt new foreword that does much to help the reader gain a useful appreciation of Fall's viewpoint), but its central truths remain accurate & valid & worthy of absorption by citizens, politicians, & military leaders alike. This book is a "must read" for any Vietnam-era scholar or writer, & many of its lessons continue to apply today in the war against terrorism.
Of course one should follow reading 'Street Without Joy' with a reading of Fall's masterpiece on the siege of Dien Bien Phu, 'Hell in a Very Small Place'. This pair of books has enduring value as histories, & as illumination for present-day & future citizens, soldiers, & leaders.
