Review

"The authors successfully trace the origins of ideas in psychology, from their roots in ancient thought to modern day schools of thought. I believe this text promotes a more integrative way of thinking about the history of psychology." - Rebecca Foushee, Fontbonne University

"The chronological approach is straightforward and accessible to students." - Matthew Isaak, University of Louisiana at Lafayette

"[A Hisory of Psychology] helps students examine their own beliefs. It is easy to apply the concepts in the early chapters to relevant, pressing issues affecting science and Psychology." - John Shelley-Tremblay, University of South Alabama

I teach a graduate course in the History of Psychology, and this is possibly one of the most inaccurate textbooks I have come across. The sources used are not always reliable (e.g., the sources have been discredited by more recent research) and the authors perpetuate myths in the history of psychology and the world in general which are known to be false by any scholar of that period (e.g., the section on the Middle Ages is rife with errors). The book is somewhat better in the last few chapters when they move to the more contemporary times.
Instead of this book, I would suggest the book by Hergenhahn (An Introduction to the History of Psychology 7th Edition) as the definitively more accurate and helpful book to turn to if you need an overview of the History of Psychology.

Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck, by Amy Alkon

"Miss Manners with Fangs." ―LA Weekly
We live in a world that's very different from the one in which Emily Post came of age. Many of us who are nice (but who also sometimes say "f*ck") are frequently at a loss for guidelines about how to be a good person who deals effectively with the increasing onslaught of rudeness we all encounter.
To lead us out of the miasma of modern mannerlessness, science-based and bitingly funny syndicated advice columnist Amy Alkon rips the doily off the manners genre and gives us a new set of rules for our twenty-first century lives.
With wit, style, and a dash of snark, Alkon explains that we now live in societies too big for our brains, lacking the constraints on bad behavior that we had in the small bands we evolved in. Alkon shows us how we can reimpose those constraints, how we can avoid being one of the rude, and how to stand up to those who are.
Foregoing prissy advice on which utensil to use, Alkon answers the twenty-first century's most burning questions about manners, including:

* Why do many people, especially those under forty, now find spontaneous phone calls rude?
* What can you tape to your mailbox to stop dog walkers from letting their pooch violate your lawn?
* How do you shut up the guy in the pharmacy line with his cellphone on speaker?
* What small gift to your new neighbors might make them think twice about playing Metallica at 3 a.m.?

Combining science with more than a touch of humor, Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck is destined to give good old Emily a shove off the etiquette shelf (if that's not too rude to say).

Review

“Alkon not only tells readers what good manners are but also provides useful suggestions for politely calling offenders’ attention to their rudeness. And she does this in a ferociously funny style--it’s worth a read for the laughs alone. There is nothing here of the proper arrangement of table setting, nor of how to address a letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury; rather Alkon deals with modern problems in interpersonal relationships, such as how civilized people should act when standing in lines, on airplanes, online, and elsewhere. In addition, she officers very dependable, sensible, caring advice to those whose friends or family are coping with terminal illness. VERDICT: Solid psychology and a wealth of helpful knowledge and rapier wit fill these pages. Highly recommended.” ―Library Journal (starred review)

“This book is a gem. Hysterically funny and grounded in science, Amy Alkon explains why so many people are rude and how it's possible to be courteous, even if you're foul-mouthed and clueless about etiquette.” ―Dr. Adam Grant, Wharton School professor and New York Times-bestselling author of Give and Take

“I can say without reservation that Good Manners For Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck is hilarious, consistently entertaining, and, above all, wise. It's Emily Post as a beach read.” ―Charlotte Allen, The Weekly Standard

“She is chatty, at times outrageous, but full of ideas about living politely in a society that she says has become too big for our brains to handle. As for Oscar Wilde, at the end of his life is said to have commented: ‘The world was my oyster, but I used the wrong fork.'” ―Moira Hodgson, The Wall Street Journal

“If you're frequently left gasping by the jaw-dropping social ineptitude of your fellow human beings, or you're guilty of being a rude jackass yourself from time to time, this is the book for you. Alkon doesn't suffer fools lightly, but she also has the gentle wisdom to know that each of us plays the role of the fool sometimes. Armed with fascinating science, great humor, and a preternatural bullshit detector for a mind, she shoots from the hip – and you'll be damn glad she does, too.” ―Dr. Jesse Bering, Associate Professor of Science Communication and author of Perv

“Contradiction is part of what makes Ms. Alkon so captivating. Perhaps the biggest contradiction: The hisser can also be utterly lovely.” ―Brooks Barnes, The New York Times

“Although the subject matter should be enough to hold your attention, it is primarily Amy's ability to turn a phrase that makes the book such a good ride. Her section headings (e.g., 'Dating is War,' 'Murder-Suicide and Other Forms of Diplomacy,' 'The Tragedy of the Asshole in the Commons') make it impossible to put the book down and get back to work without reading just one more section. I highly recommend this book.” ―Dr. Frank McAndrew, Evolutionary Psychology journal

“In this comprehensive, science-based, easy-to-read, and hilarious book, Alkon looks at where our rudeness comes from and provides tangible ways for all of us to deal with it.” ―Dr. Jennifer Verdolin, Psychology Today

“One of '11 Smart Books You Should Read This Summer'” ―Sam McNerney, 250Words.com

“This crazy redhead is on to something. Her pink Rambler story alone is worth the price of the book.” ―Elmore Leonard on I See Rude People

“Amy Alkon is intellectually promiscuous―and funny as hell.” ―Howard Bloom, paleopsychologist and author of The Lucifer Principle on I See Rude People

“Seriously great book. Alkon is smart and savvy and funny as hell. Where Hannibal the Cannibal only ate the rude, Alkon stands up to them with the sort of glorious panache that sometimes makes you want to stand and cheer.” ―David Middleton, January Magazine on I See Rude People

“Alkon turns reporting on findings in evolutionary psychology into an art form. She scans the research horizon for fascinating new results. Though relentless in her skepticism, she is keenly attuned to findings that are both solid and suggestive. (The world lost a great analyst when Alkon turned away from academic research.) In her hands, all this research turns into practical advice for how ordinary people can live better lives. Alkon may be, as the LA Weekly put it, 'Miss Manners With Fangs,' but she is perhaps better characterized as the offspring of Charles Darwin and Dorothy Parker. We academics can all take a lesson from her ability to redefine academic turf in terms 'the ordinary person' can both understand and enjoy.” ―Dr. Barbara Oakley, Oakland University on Amy Alkon

Likeable and useful but unfocused and preachy
By M. T. Crenshaw
I could not resist the title, and the subject. Any book with the word Fck in the title deserves a bit of attention especially if good manners is the subject. It is a tantalising (or perhaps puzzling) mix. Rudeness is utterly pathetic. The shop attendant at my green grocer says, people who don't return your good morning or hi are like animals. Right there, lady, they are the new cockroaches.Thank Gosh is not just us two.

This is not a book about etiquette but on rudeness in general. Alkon is a versatile writer and uses her own (militant) approach to deal with rude people and rudeness in general. Her recipe is a a very yummy cocktail made of good doses of common sense, good upbringing ways of behaving, sprinkled with some reflections on human behaviour from Behavioural and Evolutionary Psychology, and spiced up with a very witty slap on your face sort of writing. The result is sweet and sour and has hidden cherries in it.

The book's first chapter is terrific, with a reflection on what drives people to be rude. In the chapters that follow she deals with manners and rudeness in different areas of life: communication, neighbourhood relations, Internet, dating and relationships, driving, using public transport, eating in and eating out, apologising, dealing with friends and family with terminal or life-threatening illnesses. The book's last chapter is a chant to those who care, to care more, to see the others as us, to integrate the alienated, to be polite because that connects you with other humans beings, even though you don't know them.

The core of the book is "what really matters isn’t how you set the table or serve the turkey but whether you’re nice to people while you’re doing it". Also, treat others the way you want to be treated. Be Civil. Have empathy. That is it, in a nutshell the core of manners everywhere.

Alkon does not only shares her irritation (which is sometimes very much mine), and does not contain her inner cookie monster (I also have one), but she is also very sound and inquisitive, and there is a mix of serious and funny stuff that makes the book really palatable for any taste. What I like the most about the book is Alkon's relentless belief in the goodness of humanity, on making a difference, and how caring and passionate she is. I share with her my hatred for seat-hogs for example. I thought it was just me :)

Most of what Alkon says is (or should be) common knowledge, so if you don't have manners ore grew up in a family that does not brought up with rules on how to treat other people, you will get more feed from this book that if the contrary is the case. The book is good for very young people, as modern parents have a tendency not to have discipline and to justify the piggishness of their little piggies.

However, I found really great her advice on how to give an apology, how to deal with very sick friends and how to create a community in your neighbourhood. There is some ideas and practical tips about how to deal with hot-potato sort of situations or convey your clear loud message without offending the other person. I also like her advice to email and phone etiquette and how to deal with seat-hogs.

Some of the advice Alkon gives is just applicable to the USA, like restaurant tipping tips and how to proceed when a Police Patrol stops you. They are useful if you are going to travel to the USA, though.

DOWNSIDES
Despite the book being really likeable, there are a few things that rest power to it. Here a few:
> The book shows lack of focus at times, mixing in the same bag things I consider way different even if they are connected: manners, being a caring friend, etiquette, having tact, behaving ethically, liking the internet a lot, or writing reviews on Yelp.
> Etiquette and manners are not universal. Culture and Language do matter, even if we share being Westerners. However, the essence of good manners does not change much. I think the book needed a bit of more reflection on that, or an approach that also includes that. Some of the behaviours she mentions might be considered rude in another part of the world, and some etiquette musts are not etiquette elsewhere. Despite living in a globalised world people tend to live in their own bubbles and consider their own bubble the word. Wake up to the matrix.
> There are too many references to her blogs, her newspaper column, her TV interviews, her radio shows, her famous friends and her boyfriend that are a bit tiring. They are OK in a blog or column. In a book, not so much so.
> Her writing is likeable and enthusiastic but I expected a more polished text and a text that reads less like a blog.
> Alkon preaches a bit and then does not follow what she preaches. For example, her book has as a main aim to be a reminder of how we are all imperfect, we all make mistakes, to have empathy, and to connect with other human beings. What she does? She takes any opportunity to humiliate and name publicly, in person or in her blog/column, some rude people. Althought some recurrent pigs need to be reminder that they are pigs, many of the examples she gives in her book are not of recurrent pigs, just a mistake made somebody. Well, to me if you are rudder than the rude, you are utterly rude not a person with manners. Isn't that easy to see? If you preach empathy and show as if you have none, you are part of the problem.
> Excuses she gives for her being constantly unpunctual, that she is trying, that she is even reading books on it. You just need to get your alarm working and get up or get moving when it sounds, sweetie. For what she says, she is still wasting other people's time consistently. That is utterly rude to me. Is she going to use her anal humiliation approach to combating her rude self?
> She might have manners but she swears too often.
> The formatting of the book in Kindle is generous in the margins, so that makes more pages than they should.
> The index in the Kindle edition does not refer to the Kindle, just to the hard-copy, so it is worthless for Kindle readers..

Accept the Modern Technology, learn to be polite with it!
By Thor-Zine
Amy Alkon aka the Advice Goddess runs a syndicated advice column across the country. Unlike any of her competition she combines a great wit along with modern studies to back her up.

Do you feel that Technology has turned the whole population into a bunch of rude creatures who think nothing of yelling in the speaker cell phone while you are trying to enjoy a movie? Amy agrees with you but reminds us that technology is important (we all relay on it), and is therefore here to stay and proposes new rules (or sort) of etiquette for this modern age. "Hint" there still is and we can all learn to get along with we show some etiquette.

Amy realizes some email and text rather and pick up the phone an call, she recognizes some people are starting and ending relationships this way and is telling them to be realistic. As far as I know, she is the first popular advice columnist to tackle these subjects.

A must read for those who worship this technology as well as those who curse it for being the source of all evil.

Comfortable seating, fireplace
By James Kennedy
I commonly spend Sunday afternoons at the U is Washington bookstore, Bellevue branch. Comfortable seating, fireplace, snack bar, a good place to renew my ties to UDUB, where I was student, grad, full professor, department chairman and faculty senator. My usual modus is to compile about 20 books and magazines into a shopping cart, and then review each thoroughly to select those I buy, typically more than half. This book by Amy Alkon had grabber title. Having spent over 20 years in the Air Force, I am a nice retired colonel who doesn't hesitate to say f*uck, except in the presence of minors.

I sampled several sections at random, and quickly identified it as a keeper. When I git home, I insisted on reading a good chunk of the aloud to my wife. Very funny, laughing out loud funny, and we both agreed that at its foundation, it contained sensible advice. It was like a print edition of Bill Maher on Real Time, a Friday night ritual ritual for us. I have since sent copies to daughters and friends. As we all know, the current news contains very little sunshine. This book was a welcome break from the right evangelical BS that is poisoning our country. Educated liberals will love this book and redneck bible thumpers will likely hate it.

The book was a joyful diversion. If you don't laugh, life will make you cry.

Nancy Chandler's Map of Chiang Mai, 18th Ed., by Nancy Chandler and Nima Chandler

For many visitors, Chiang Mai's real appeal is in its secret sights, shops and cafes hidden down side streets and back alleyways, behind temples and inside otherwise nondescript lots. Nancy Chandler's Map of Chiang Mai shares these treasures, with extensive listings of everything from private museums and boutiques open by appointment only to yoga, massage, cooking and Thai language schools, more vegetarian restaurants than on any other map, noodle stalls, things to do with the kids, tips for escaping the heat in summer, where to catch a European film, and more. The map includes detailed guides to the Night Bazaar and the backstreets of Warorot Market (Chiang Mai's Chinatown) as well as Greater Chiang Mai and the City Center. The index includes more telephone numbers and descriptions as well, including some places that could not be squeezed on the map.

About the Author
American artist Nancy Chandler is best known for her detailed maps of Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but she has also created an extensive line of Thai themed greeting cards and gifts celebrating Thailand and things Thai. Other titles include her Thai theme coloring book and activity book for children. Her Bangkok based daughter Nima Chandler now handles all map research and editing (as a result, there are more bars on the map now, she jokes).

A MUST HAVE if you are going to Chiang Mai!
By Krish
You may want another map for perfectly accurate navigation, however, if you are going to Bangkok or Chiang Mai you absolutely need Nancy Chandler's maps. If you are only buying one map make it Nancy's. I suggest than when you plan your trip you sit down with her maps and plan places to check out. You will probably be able to use her maps to decide in which area of the city you would like to stay.

She has color coded location genres (restaurants are pink stars, bars are purple stars, wats are purple triangles, accommodations are blue, etc.) and places with a/c are noted. And not only does her website offer free updates, but has very interesting listings of current events you may want to attend.

Nancy was an American Graphic Designer who expatriated to Thailand and her maps have a whimsical, easy to use quality that really opens up the places to you. And in the accompanying resource pamphlet her special recommendations are worth making an extra effort to find. This companion booklet has listings organized in super useful ways - for example the restaurants are organized by ethnicity and there are lists of cooking schools and massage schools.

Perusing a Nancy Chandler map in advance of a trip to Thailand is one of the great joys of life! (In my case this involves a lot of compiling lists of places to eat.) And a secondary joy is re-living your adventures by showing the map to friends when you get home. And if you are on the fence about whether to holiday in Thailand then looking at a Nancy Chandler map just might inspire you to go ahead and get those plane tickets. I want to go right now!

I suggest you start at Nancy's website to check for most recent edition dates and to print map updates. Then you will probably come back to Amazon for the best prices and fastest shipping :)

*WARNING Thailand could ruin you for other holiday destinations. Suddenly it's just not a holiday if one is not getting a massage every day...

The Map you need
By David Field
Wow.

In my (way too long) life I've seen some pretty good maps, and when I saw that Nancy Chandler had released a new version of her map of Chiang Mai, I decided to spring for it.

Simply put, I think this is the best guide to anywhere in Thailand. And I'm including the Lonely Planet Guide, the Rough Guide (both of which I gave five-star reviews to), and just about all web sites I've visited. If you're not aware of the backpacker culture in Thailand, Chiang Mai, which is the second-largest city in Thailand and situates in the North part of the country, is a center for Elephant Trekking, Mountain Biking, and White-water Rafting. While you could go on day-trips to do all these things, the city has just about all that Bangkok has in a much less frenzied atmosphere with a huge number of guest-houses and restaurants. All of this is concentrated in two or three areas, to the degree that there almost isn't a street without some Backpacker attraction.

When I opened the map, I was reminded of a Buster Keaton movie (The High Sign) where he steals a newspaper from a merry-go-round patron, sits on a bench, and opens the newspaper to read it. However, instead of a lot of newspaper pages, the whole newspaper is one huge sheet that finally overwhelms Keaton (he sells it back to the original owner). When you open Nancy Chandler's Map it gets bigger and bigger, until you're reading a page that's 30 inches by 20 inches. And it's necessary, because the Map shows around 5,000 places (I'm including areas of street vendors and stalls in markets). At one point even Chandler has to give up on the details and points out for one area, "Many more guesthouses that we can show."

When you start with the map (at 5 x 7.5 inches) it has a map of the area around Warorot, a large day market, with plenty of restaurants and guesthouse on the periphery. The map at this point only shows an area of around 300 (meters/yards) by 450 (meters/yards) easy enough to walk around. The map has many personal remarks from Nancy - she uses felt-tip pens in different colors to show different areas - and at one point she notes that the canal is "not exactly this color of blue anymore . . ." A market of local tribal goods is marked "No middlemen," but these additions are often useful and rarely get in the way.

Open the map and the next thing you see is a map of the Night Bazaar area, twice as large as the last map. For those of you that thought your last Double Whopper on the Khao San Road in Bangkok would be the end of your addiction, you be pleased to know that there's a Burger King near the market. Opposite are Starbucks and Haagen-Dazs, and hopefully, the end of eating Western food and going Thai. Don't worry, if you can't face noodles any more, Nancy lists places that offer international cuisine - all the Asian cuisines, plus American, English and French and just about most European cuisines, including a large selection of pizza places, Middle Eastern, and over 50 cafes. Plus there's a big selection of Vegetarian and Healthy Food restaurants.

Turn to the next spread (10 x 15 inches) and you'll see a map of the surrounding countryside (25 x 40 miles) to Chiang Mai. Many of the attractions are in the jungles and require a day trip, but there are other places (noticeably craft outlets) that are just a few miles away. Also shown is the Siam Insect Zoo - I imagine the petting area is pretty quiet.

Now we get to the real thing - a map of central Chiang Mai. This 20 x 15 inch map has the moated area of the city (which is about a mile square) and the area to the east of that, toward the river. Also included is the area just to the east of the river, which has another bunch of guesthouses and shops, along with some good entertainment venues. It also shows places on the river where you can go for sedate boat tours. The area covered is about two miles by one and a half, so the detail is amazing (but necessary). To give you some idea of the closeness and variety of everything, Billy's Pizzeria Italiana is but 200 yards from Yunee Fish and Chips. And Nancy has recommendations for areas to take a pub crawl and another list of places where you're unlikely to see other farangs (foreigners).

And finally we come to the area that takes up the whole side of the map (30 x 20 inches). This shows six miles by four, and has the moated city as its center. It includes everything but the detail that the previous maps have shown (apart from the surrounding countryside) and has closeups of the area around the Huay Kaew road, with its slightly newer guesthouses and stores. There's also plenty of detail of the areas just outside the moat.

But wait - there's more! Included with the map is a small booklet (but 84 pages) with just about all the items the map mentions, arranged in groups, with map references. Nancy uses the fold lines of the map rather than drawing a grid, and this works well. Should you need one, the map shows a place to buy Superhighway tractors (you could take it back to Bangkok and do some needed work there!). They're next to Lanna Hospital. The booklet holds three and a half times the information that would take up an entire side (30 x 20 inch) of the map, unlike some other maps that give you basically one major map and a few detail maps on one side, with a few recommendations on the other side.

And, there's even more! On the Nancychandler net website, there are updates every couple of months for free, so take a look there to keep up to date.

This map is amazing. As I said, I put it above any other guidebook or map of Chiang Mai, and of course there's Nancy's map of Bangkok which has the same approach (Nancy Chandler's Map of Bangkok, 25th Edition). I was going to buy that until I saw the new edition of the Chiang Mai map. Now I'm trying to stop myself buying the Bangkok map until there's a new edition, but I don't think that I will be able to wait that long.

Obviously, I haven't tested the map "on the ground." However, other reviews of Nancy's map praise the accuracy. Even with my failing eyes I could read the map with reading glasses, and I wouldn't be afraid to use this as my only guide around the streets.

For around the cost of a guidebook, this map indicates all kinds of places you'd never find any other way. If you're going to Chiang Mai, you can't do without it. Really, you can't.

Very helpful - all the info you need in one map
By Dorcas Kelley
Towns in Thailand aren't well marked. Most streets don't have signs and there are few directional signs. Plus the native language is far beyond my skills. This map was a life-saver for my trip to Chiang Mai! Not only could I find directions but it has info about locations of stores, restaurants, places to see - everything on one map! I found that I didn't need any type of guidebook when I had this map along. I highly recommend it, along with her map for Bangkok. Happy travels!

A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction (Center for Environmental Structure), by Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa, Murray S

You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction.

After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language.

At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people.

At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment.

"Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

Amazon.com Review
The second of three books published by the Center for Environmental Structure to provide a "working alternative to our present ideas about architecture, building, and planning," A Pattern Language offers a practical language for building and planning based on natural considerations. The reader is given an overview of some 250 patterns that are the units of this language, each consisting of a design problem, discussion, illustration, and solution. By understanding recurrent design problems in our environment, readers can identify extant patterns in their own design projects and use these patterns to create a language of their own. Extraordinarily thorough, coherent, and accessible, this book has become a bible for homebuilders, contractors, and developers who care about creating healthy, high-level design.

This book changed the way I look at buildings ... and life!
By James DeRossitt
My fascination with Christopher Alexander's work began with "The Timeless Way of Building," but increased tenfold upon discovering his inexhaustible classic, "A Pattern Language." At over a thousand pages (I think,) "A Pattern Language" is an encyclopedic study of what makes buildings, streets, and communities work -- indeed, what makes environments human.
Alexander and his co-authors present us with over two hundred (roughly 250) "patterns" that they believe must be present in order for an environment to be pleasing, comfortable, or in their words, "alive." The patterns start at the most general level -- the first pattern, "Independent Regions," describes the ideal political entity, while another of my favorite patterns, "Mosaic of Subcultures," described the proper distribution of different groups within a city. The patterns gradually become more specific -- you'll read arguments about how universities should relate to the community, the proper placement of parks, the role of cafes in a city's life. If you wonder about the best design for a home, the authors will describe everything from how roofs and walls should be built, down to how light should fall within the home, where your windows should be placed, and even the most pleasant variety of chairs in the home. An underlying theme of all the patterns is that architecture, at its best, can be used to foster meaningful human interaction, and the authors urge us to be aware of how the houses we build can help us balance needs for intimacy and privacy.
They admit that they are uncertain about some of the patterns -- they indicate their degree of certainty using a code of asterisks placed before the pattern. For each pattern, the authors summarize the pattern in a brief statement printed in boldface, and then describe it at length, drawing upon a variety of sources to give us a full sense of what they mean: these "supporting sources" include an excerpt from a Samuel Beckett novel, papers in scholarly journals, newspaper clippings, etc. Most patterns are accompanied by a photograph (many of them beautiful and fascinating in their own right) and all are illustrated by small, casual hand-drawings. Taken together, "A Pattern Language" is an extraordinarily rich text, visually and conceptually.
As I said in the header of this review, "A Pattern Language" has changed the way I look at buildings and neighborhoods -- I feel like this book has made me attuned to what works, and what doesn't work, in the human environment. I'm constantly realizing things about buildings and streets that this book helped me see -- things that make people feel at home, or feel "alive," in their surroundings, or conversely, things that make people uncomfortable. And the book makes me think differently about life because it showed me how our well-being depends so much upon the way our buildings fit, or don't fit, us as UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS.

it isn't about architecture
By Philip Greenspun
Nominally about architecture and urban planning, this book has more wisdom about psychology, anthropology, and sociology than any other that I've read. Nearly every one of this volume's 1170 pages will make you question an assumption that you probably didn't realize you were making. In a section entitled "Four-Story Limit", Alexander notes that "there is abundant evidence to show that high buildings make people crazy." Underneath is a photo of San Franisco's Transamerica tower, captioned with a quote from Orwell's 1984:
"The Ministry of Truth--Minitrue, in Newspeak--was startlingly different from any other object in sight. It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up terrace after terrace 300 metres in the air."
Alexander backs up this polemic with convincing arguments that high-rise living removes people too far from the casual society of the street, from children playing in the yard, and that apartment-dwellers therefore become isolated.
Alexander spends a lot of time in this book trying to figure out how to restore the damage to our communities that have been done by automobiles. He argues for better public spaces and for more integration of children, old people, and workers. He argues for more access to water by more people.
Many of Alexander's arguments are against the scale of modern systems. Public schools spend a fortune on building and administration precisely because they are so physically large [I've seen statistics showing that our cities spend only about one-third of their budgets on classrooms and teachers]. If we had shopfront schools and fired all the school system personnel who don't teach, we might be able to get student-teacher ratios down to 8 or 10:1 without an increase in cost. Similarly, Alexander argues for smaller retail shops, smaller factories (or at least identifiable small workgroups within factories rather than hundreds of faceless cogs) and more master/apprentice instruction.
What if you like the depredations of modernity and aren't interested in a utopian world where basic human needs are met? Can you learn anything about architecture from this guy? Absolutely. You'll learn that light is everything. Your bedroom has to have eastern light so that the sun wakes you up. Your best living quarters should have southern light. All the rooms should have light from at least two sides, otherwise there will be too much contrast and you'll just have to draw the shades. If you've got kids, make them sleep and play in their own wing of the house. Build a realm for yourself and your wife on a different floor. Meet the kids in the kitchen.
To avoid cluttering my apartment, I give away virtually all the books that I buy these days. I'm keeping this one and plan to re-read it every year.

zen and the art of architecture
By audrey frances
I've read all three books in this series, and I thought this was by far the best and most accessible. The first, "A Timeless Way of Building", introduced the author's philosophy and was, I thought, a bit bogged down with New Age jargon. I prefer to think in terms of comfort and relationships, though ultimately I agree with just about everything the author-as-designer states and obviously went on to read his other work. I thought the third book, photographs of a project completed by the author, should have been the most informative, but ultimately didn't do justice to the author's ideas. But maybe it was just the poor quality of the pictures. IMHO this is the masterpiece of the trilogy. Its concern is the practical application of the author's ideas, and one could only wish to live or work in a space designed with this philosophy. His thinking is pragmatic AND beautiful, bringing balance and harmony to space.

Having made the case for his system of architectural and social design in his earlier work, the author here goes on to formalize a system of 253 patterns, ranging in scale from towns down to benches. Patterns 1 through 94 define a town or community; numbers 95 through 204 define (groups of) buildings; and numbers 205-253 define a "buildable building". The individual patterns are themselves evocative and inviting, and cover a myriad of human social and environmental relationships: number 1 is Independent Region, pattern 2 is Distribution of Towns, 10 is Magic of the City, 57 is Children in the City, number 62 is High Places, number 63 Dancing in the Street, 94 is Sleeping in Public, 203 Child Caves, 223 Deep Reveals, 235 Soft Inside Walls, 253 Things from Your Life.

One example of developing the pattern language for a specific project using a subset of the author's Pattern Language is that of the front porch, composed of 10 elements: private terrace on street, sunny place, six-foot balcony, outdoor room, paths & goals, ceiling height variety, columns at the corners, front-door bench, raised flowers and different chairs. Alexander gives many such examples and eloquently details the process of exploring patterns and moving between them in a search for the proper set. And that is one thing that makes this book special and fun. He does not say a 'successful' set of elements but a 'proper' set of elements. At first that might seem like a lot of hot hubris, but on reading you find that there is a reason that a balcony should be 6-feet square .... THAT is the minimum space required for people to have a comfortable discussion around a small table. It is a charming and useful way to look at one's surroundings, and each of the 253 patterns is given the treatment as the author goes on to detail each element's specifications, definition and purpose.

These expanded definitions are often quite charming; for instance, under pattern 57, Children in the City, he specifies a very safe bike path that meanders past workplaces and shops with windows so that kids can see the diversity and alive-ness of the place in which they live. Lovely idea.

While others have noted that Alexander's ideas inspired changes in software engineering, I would also like to note that the author's ideas were, in turn, most likely informed by others, such as neuroscientist Karl Lashley and, in particular, linguist Noam Chomsky. Chomsky developed the idea of a generative grammar, composed of constituent symbols, a set of rules and a set of terminal elements, which together describe all possible sentences in a language. This was considered revolutionary at the time and is quite similar to Alexander's characterization of his patterns, described as a context combined with a system of forces or rules generating an infinite number of solutions in the form of sets of specific design elements. That configuration, in turn, becomes the context for another pattern. The theory's dynamism and scalability render it very powerful indeed.

I think another interesting approach to this philosophy would be to reverse engineer our own environment. To say, Obviously there is a Pattern Language at work in the larger world in which we live, and it is decidedly in opposition to what Mr. Alexander and others, including myself, believe is preferred. What are the rules of that language? What is the context within which those elements operate? The author codifies a desirable Pattern Language. I'd like to see his principles used to turn an eye toward decodifying our own milieu. This is the kind of book that leads one to think and imagine, and isn't that a wonderful thing?

What I didn't like about this book were that neither ideas nor photographs were credited, which is frustrating for someone who wants to follow up on these ideas, and not fair to those whose work contributed to the author's. The author apologized for this in his first book, but then repeated the discourtesy here; the second time is less forgivable. Also, there is no index, which is especially painful for a librarian :-) I would have liked to have seen a more diverse selection of examples, and some attempt to address the implementation of a pattern language after more conventional designs are already in place. That said, I agree with the many others who have stated that this book changed the way they looked at their surroundings, and I'm profoundly grateful to the author for his work, which stands up well after a quarter century.

Even when mediocrity (or worse) is the order of the day, there are those voices in the wilderness who speak to a better understanding and envision a better world. In codifying an aesthetic relationship among elements of a viable, living environment and describing a system of scalable self-sustaining systems, the author joins visionaries like R. Buckminster Fuller, who bring a philosophy to architecture that is as much about living as it is about building. I would encourage anyone who is interested in architecture, design, a philosophy of organic wholeness, or creating a more humane environment, to read this informative and provocative book.

Neonatal Resuscition 6th Edition through Amazon
By Janice A. Baker
Whenever a new edition comes out, I like to purchase my own for constant review and referral during
the years it is current. The DVD that comes with this book has helpful reenactments to help visualize the flow chart in most situations. As true in previous editions, the book is layed out in such a way to promote easy understanding and reinforcement.

This edition definitely is worth buying due to the new changes. It's just not the same old same.

Further, the time it took to get the book and the condition were both excellent.

Neonatal Resuscitation Textbook
By Ellie
I purchased this textbook, because I needed it for the class in neonatal resuscitation. Unfortunately, it is very hospital orientated, and I am a home birth midwife. I need this class to keep up national certification. It does a very good job of preparing you to take the tests that need to be accomplished, before you are actually able to take the class. The instructor that I use is very good at applying the materials for out of hospital settings. So I am pleased with the combination. I also have an Apple Computer with new operating system, so the disc that comes with the book does not work in my computer. It would obviously be very good for this company to make a disc that does work in the Apple computer or tell us before we buy. But this complaint has been registered multiple times, without any fix. I have written to the company to ask for an Apple disc when it is available, but I am not holding my breath.

Best NRP textbook yet
By Amazon Customer
Best NRP textbook yet. Has been improved in presentation, perhaps easier to understand than earlier versions. There have been a few changes in the medications, and a better discussion on the use of CPAP and PEEP pressures. Great for review or as a new skill set. If you are new to NRP get the book with the CD-ROM.

Excellent story!
By Tigerpaws
The previous (low star) review was from a disappointed recipient who did not get the item they ordered - It wasn't really a review of the story or this audio version of it. I found this first book in the series to be excellent. It introduces us to Lawrence and his experience meeting and learning with his dragon Temeraire. Readers can enjoy the entire series of adventures and this is the starting point. In the audio version, Simon Vance does an outstanding reading, bringing the characters to life, especially the intelligent, amazing dragon. I recommend the story highly for readers of a the correct age. There's fighting and war, and sometimes sadness (one of the hardest examples - a dragon's captain is hung for being a traitor and it breaks the dragon's heart). That example might be too painful for very young readers. But for all other groups, there's excitement, dedication, love and adventure, everything you need in a fantasy series. The next book in the series is in an entirely different setting, and is also sure to delight.
