Well written

Delivered quickly. This book does a good job of illustrating a framework and explaining the context of not-for-profit fundraising. I needed a solid source book to assist my client in building common knowledge and language within her board, and that's what I got. A very good value.

Mostly fantastic with a few caveats

This is a great text to cover the basics of fundraising. Lindahl is comprehensive and easy to use. The real-life examples are helpful, and even the charts are good. I like reading about the legal aspects of fundraising as much as reading about the theories behind fundraising. Some helpful data is presented about donor habits as well.

The caveats are fairly minor, but here they are.

First of all, in the section under Jewish fundraising, there is a section titled "The Old Testament and Giving." This betrays a decidedly Christo-centric perspective on the part of Lindahl (who teaches at the Evangelical Covenant Church-affiliated university). FYI, Jewish people don't read the Old Testament. They read the Tanakh: the Torah, Nevi'im and Ketuvim. Which editor didn't catch that? Come on, now!

Secondly, the chapter on giving by U.S. racial groups (African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American) is downright ignorant. Native American cultures are not one culture, and can't be classified as such. Talking about Asian Americans as though they are mostly impacted by Confucianism and Buddhism ignores the wild diversity among the people descended from a continent that includes 34 countries (although the observation that giving based on the racialized experience of discrimination of Asian Americans here in the U.S. is spot-on). It's like Lindahl was really trying hard to responsibly discuss ignored populations in philanthropy, and it falls flat. Perhaps his analysis could benefit from talking to the Asian American Federation of New York or the Bay Area's Peggy Saika, the president of Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy.

Other than this, it is really a helpful text.

Ackerman (a professor of religion at Dartmouth) explores the "remarkable assembly of women... and the multitude of roles they play" in the book of Judges. She identifies in Judges six "types" of women's roles that, she asserts, illuminate not only Hebrew Scripture but a breathtaking range of ancient Near Eastern literature that includes Homer and Christian scripture. Each chapter considers one "type," identified with one or more characters who play an identifiable role in Judges. Deborah and Jael, Israel's two great women warriors, play the role of the "military hero" as well as the priestly role of "cult specialist." The role of the queen mother is represented by the mother of Sisera, the commander defeated by Deborah and Jael. Manoh's wife (Samson's mother) fills the more "powerless" role of mothers, wives and daughters in waiting. The largely autonomous role of the prostitute is represented by Delilah, and the daughters of Shiloh represent the role of the "maidens abducted while dancing." Ackerman deftly weaves together literary criticism and historical analysis, and her discussion of one role illuminates the discussion of another. Particularly enlightening is Ackerman's application of literary forms associated with the Canaanite goddesses Anat and Asherah to stories of biblical women warriors and queen mothers ranging from Judith and Jezebel to Mary. Challenging reading - but worth it!

Reading this work by Ackerman opened a whole new world to me: the rich variety of women in the Book of Judges. I must admit that I had never really noticed before that almost all of the women in Genesis and in Exodus acted mainly to preserve the life of a male or the continuation of a male lineage. (For example, all those wonderful women in the early chapters of Exodus - Shiphrah, Puah, Miriam, Jochebed, the daughter of the king - were trying to save the life of Moses). But in Judges we encounter a feast of women of all sorts of different types. I must also confess that at times I found Ackerman's interpretations very challenging - both intellectually and spiritually, but the benefits gained by reading this book were worth the challenges.

Interesting conjecture at places, but a bit too dry and repeative.

Susan Ackerman's study of the book of Judges in a feminist light does offer some interesting angles on the familiar(Samson) and the not-so familiar(the shrewd wife that managed the land well). But most of this book was just dry, dense academia that did not capture me. The literary equivilent of fiber; good to read, hard to digest.

About the Author
Kate McMullan has written more than 50 books for children, including several collaborations with her husband, the noted illustrator Jim McMullan. McMullan, she has created the imaginative Dragon Slayers' Academy series. Sasson and Saudi Princess Sultana follow their earlier accounts of social oppression of women in Arabia with one that focuses on the Saudi royal family and how, despite its wealth and relative freedom from social conventions, its men continue to oppress women. Specific instances include the forced marriage of a young niece to a brutal older man and a cousin's harem of sex slaves. The royal women react with varying degrees of acceptance; an occasional, minor rebellion; and alcohol and drug abuse. Although Sultana's husband is a more enlightened man, she reveals that even she has a drinking problem, brought on by the stress of helplessly witnessing inequities. Sasson and Sultana also detail Islamic culture and teachings and the contradictions between what the Koran teaches regarding women and the cultural interpretations made by men in Saudi society. Heartbreaking and disgusting read

I have now read all 3 in the trilogy of Princess books and wish I hadn't. Not that they aren't interesting - they are but in a very sad way. They also point out that a large number of Saudi men are disgusting pigs who belong in a special kind of hell, minus their private parts. I realize there is a fair amount of anti Princess book stuff out on the internet re the accuracy of the books. My husband worked off/on for many years in SA and told me often of the Saudi culture as respects women. While he obviously can't confirm the veracity of the personal experiences detailed in the books, he does know statements re the culture are definitely and sadly accurate. I am heartbroken for Saudi women and especially young girls who are helpless against these animals posing as men. The worst part is these disgusting pigs hide behind the Koran as though those teachings support their sadistic behavior. It is shameful on so many levels I don't know where to start. A good read? It's a heartbreaking read that actually gave me nightmares. If Princess Sultana is a real person, she and all Saudi women and girls have my utmost sympathy. I thank God I was NOT born in
Saudi Arabia.

Fascinating insight into the Saudi royal family

I greatly enjoyed all three of the Princess Sultana books, however I think the second two books could easily have been condensed into one. Although I respect and applaud Princess Sultana's fight against her male dominated society in defense of women, I found the incredibly lavish and wasteful lifestyles of the entire royal family to be almost as disturbing as their treatment of women. To hear the princess bemoan the fact that the royal family could eventually lose some of their enormous wealth and power to the possible democratization of their country after dropping $500,000 on a single shopping spree at Bergdorf Goodman left me cold. As a Saudi woman, Princess Sultana was treated as a second class citizen and she shed light on the horrific conditions many Arabic women suffer. Yet as one who also enjoyed a life of supreme luxury due to her royal status, I think the princess was a bit myopic about the hardships that many people outside of her world of unearned privilege endure.

Another powerful book #3 of the trilogy.

This is the third of three books dealing with the plight of Muslim women in Saudi Arabia specifically, and of Muslim women throughout the world. Princess Sultana's honest voice in speaking the truth of this situation is compelling, saddening, enlightening and frustrating. There is no clear way to assist in changing the underlying social and religious core of another society, no matter how much that assistance is needed.

But it is compelling reading, and so educational. Of course, as this is narration out of real life, though it reads like a story, it really never winds up with a 'happy ending' the way a novel might, as it is still lived history.

I have found her three books to be brilliant reads and kudos to Jean Sasson for bringing this important first person narrative to view.
