Meaningful and illuminating View of mutual funds

Eric Tyson has written (well-written) a book that manages to blend just the right amount of detail with general material. As a novice in the arena of mutual funds, I can't imagine a better book to help you learn about mutual funds and how/what to invest.

There are many good things to say about this informative book, but I want to emphasize just 3: 1) Tyson has the uncanny and rare gift of presenting material that never condescends to the reader, but recognizes exactly how much knowledge a reader new to mutual funds can assimilate;

2) I appreciate his directness and honesty about specific mutual funds--he praises Vanguard throughout the book, while listing some other funds apposite for certain investing situations. 3)He genuinely cares about ordinary people gaining knowledge about how to invest and make wise decisions about money and investment (I highly recommend another of his Dummies books on investing.).

Highly recommended--even experienced mutual fund investors will learn a lot from this book.

About the Author
Despite being born into a wealthy family, Thomas De Quincey had a difficult childhood. He was forced to move quite often, and his father passed away when he was only eight years old. He attended several prestigious schools before running away when he was seventeen, returning home several months later. De Quincy studied at Oxford University for a short while, but he soon became addicted to opium, and dropped out in 1807; he would suffer from this addiction for the rest of his life. In 1821, De Quincey s struggles inspired him to write Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, which was published in London Magazine and served as a professional breakthrough for him. After his wife passed away in 1837, De Quincey s addiction became dramatically worse and his finances suffered as a result. He managed to write several more books, including a second memoir, Suspiria de Profundis, before passing away in 1859.

I liked it more than I thought I would. I was reading books on John Ruskin, the Wordsworths, Coleridge and Southey in preparation for a walking tour in the south central region of the Lake District and De Quincey just kept popping up in references so I put Recollections of the Lakes and Lake Poets in my Kindle and started it shortly before the trip. It took me awhile to get get used to the 19th Century writing style and, admittedly, there were a few sections to which I did not devote my total attention. However, De Quincey had me in a reading grip with his version of the tragedy of George and Sara Green and the eventual dispersal of their orphaned children. Later sections on the poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth and Robert Southey, caused different reactions - annoyance and exasperation with Coleridge, calm appreciation for Wordsworth and admiration for Southey.
