About the Author
Sasha Abramsky is a freelance journalist and a part-time lecturer in the University Writing Program, at the University of California, Davis. His work has appeared in the Nation, the Atlantic Monthly, New York magazine, the Village Voice, Rolling Stone, and many other publications. In 2000 he was awarded an Open Society, Crime, and Communities Media Fellowship, and he is currently a Senior Fellow at Demos, the New York City-based think tank. His work on poverty was funded by a grant from the Open Society Foundations' Special Fund for Poverty Alleviation. He lives in Sacramento, California.

very well presented

I was enlightened by new ideas to help the indigent. Although I am a staunch Republican and the ideas presented were left leaning in that we need to redistribute incomes by taxation, it was wonderful how these new ideas would not only empower those that need the help up but would also help to mainstream them into society and at the same time reduce the ridiculous number of welfare programs that have not worked for decades in the fashion they have been utilized. We can only expect failure by doing the same as we have for the poor, from LBJ's time to present. The present system IS NOT working. Perhaps Abransky's ideas should be analyzed and be implemented into present programs. It is hopeful that a new system might work. It is not only the moral thing to do for those people entrenched in the cycle of poverty but also makes great economic sense for our American society as a whole.

The growth of Inequality in the US

This is a fast and dirty analysis of this work. I am still in the process of evaluating and researching some of the conclusions the author proposes.
Mr. Ambramsky without a doubt has identified the extent of poverty in the current conditions in the United States today. He has well documented this case in current pockets of poverty. As a current member of a board in my community that is working to provide affordable housing for extreme low income and the working poor in my community, I can see where his analysis and the conditions he sites exist in my community.

I worked in the Civil Rights movement on the issues of poverty, access to jobs with livable wages and quality education. During the "war poverty" there were exceses by poverty pimps who feathered their own nests at the expense of the masses of folks. However, on the whole a lot of people were able to see their standard of living increase, kids could gain access to higher education and infant mortality rates drop -- particularly in the South -- where there is still the "Shadow of the Plantation".

Most of the advanced capitalist countries either subsidize education for their nationals, or have waivers for those who work in programs in the national interests. In the US, our kids come out of college with so much debt that they are forced to try to acquire the most highest paying jobs to retire their student loans (eg. a doctor has to decide to do tummy tucks and nose bobs as opposed to basic scientific research to improve the status of preventive medicine.

Our MBAs are running to Wall Street where they transfer money as opposed to building sustainable businesses. Human beings are treated as commodities (ie. what have you done for me Today, as opposed to retraining them for the 21st Century jobs.

Some of the proposals Mr. Ambramsky advocates can help raise the poor into the "middle class" over a period of decades. However, there is no political will in Congress to take this up. In fact, the US is losing a lot of its institutional knowledge in Congress due to the fact that a lot of members are retiring because they cannot get any thing done in this dysfunctional environment.

The future is still bright. The Millenilals and Gen Y kids are rising to the challenge. They do not have the super pacs deniro, but they are making their voices heard. To paraphrase the late Sam Cooke, "change is going to come".

A Must Read Book For Both Politicians and the Public

While we have reduced poverty in the United States, there is still quite a ways to go. Poverty isn't confined to places such as Detroit and Appalachia, but also exists in the suburban neighborhoods as well. Abramsky lays out numerous policy proposals to resolve this crisis that exists today. Candidates running in 2016 should read this book and fully embrace these ideas, both on the campaign trail and inside the Beltway. There shouldn't be any hesitation or timidity in calling for a deep commitment to reducing poverty further in this country.

Q. What do you do on a daily basis?
A. As a business owner/designer, my day is equal parts reflection, creativity, and always embracing the moment. It starts with maintaining our mission to strengthen the connection between a child and a parent through smart design. I put the strategy of the business first in order to design my line. It's imperative to decide on your point-of-view and commit to that in all that you do. For belle&beanzer, it's about integrity, intention, and inspiration--from aesthetic and function, to fabric and factories I choose for production, from boutiques who ask to carry our line, to the interaction with my customers.

Q. What was your greatest challenge when launching your collection?
A. There are two great challenges to any business venture, what you know and what you believe. You bring with you a certain number of skills and knowledge, and the rest you need to learn and/or build relationships with those who have what you're missing. For belle&beanzer, in addition to the aesthetic choices we made, our garments are designed to strengthen the connection between parent and child through smart design. The intention and technical design of our garments had to be just right, and we needed a key design team in place to help us deliver that to our families and caregivers. What you believe will be tested again and again, and it all comes back to your vision, mission, and values. We were offered quick fixes, cheaper alternatives, and watered down versions of our line. However, belle&beanzer values integrity, intention and inspiration in all that we do. Ultimately, keeping that in the forefront of our mind made our choices clear.

Q. What are your main responsibilities as a fashion design intern?
A. At Ann Taylor, my primary responsibility is assisting the sportswear team. It involves everything from organizing the sample closet to preparing tech packs. On some days, I spend hours exploring the trim closets to look for certain buttons and hook and eyes.

Q. What is the most challenging aspect of being an intern?
A. The most challenging aspect of being an intern is the relatively short duration of it. Once I was familiar with my team and the organization that I had worked for, the internship was close to ending.

Q. What advice would you give someone beginning an internship?
A. Open your eyes and absorb as much as you can. Most of the time, the tasks can feel menial, but there is always something to learn.

If only this book was published when I was going into college!

Becoming a Fashion Designer is an awesome book to buy for your daughter, son, niece, nephew, or godchild who is into fashion and a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school. It talks about the ins and outs of the fashion business along with a quiz to see if they are really interested in all the aspects of the industry.

I can also see this book being a great tool for first year fashion institute educators. If your students aren't interested in this book, they probably have no place taking any kind of fashion course!

As someone who has graduated fashion college, it was still a delightful read. I enjoyed the articles with well known fashion designers and other people in the industry. I enjoyed it immensely, but I think I would have enjoyed it even more as a teen, just getting a glimpse inside the world of fashion. I remember when it was all new to me - this book brought back all the new giddiness of that time in my life.

From what I have seen the fashion industry is just competitive as any other field out there. In order to succeed you must not only have the drive and determination but the knowledge to make the right decisions and know what steps will work out the best. In BECOMING A FASHION DESIGNER by Lisa Springsteel we are given not only the ins and outs of the business but first-person accounts as to what it takes to be successful.

Another great gem from the book is the importance of branding, setting yourself apart from others and making what you do something that people will be curious about, causing them to want to know more about you and your work.

I think whether you are looking for a career in fashion yourself or are just curious as to how it all gets to the final project, Springsteel's BECOMING A FASHION DESIGNER gives you an insider's view into the making of a winning design and career.

Probably the definitive book for those thinking about a career in fashion

This book is the antidote to the more common projections of glamour associated with work in the fashion industry. Actually, I think there's more glamour than in most professions. Yet the expectations set by culture are far from the reality.

To me this book was designed with an ideal format for covering a career in a field. There are textbook like sections that don't feel like a textbook due to the author's biographical content. And there are interviews with all types of professionals in the field. The interviews seemed genuine to me, not trying to promote the industry or the images portrayed in the media.

The big takeaway is that this industry is complex, challenging and involves a mostly non-artistic work. Success depends on a mixture of artistic appreciation, business acumen and marketing-sales work.

I think if a young person reads this book and then desires a career in fashion it would be a positive signal. I found the book intrinsically interesting.

A Very Different, Ambitious Eleventh Doctor Tale...........

Jenny Colgan (J.T. Colgan) has already given us an incredible Doctor Who Eleventh Doctor novel with "Dark Horizons". The similarity here is that we get what is clearly a Doctor Who story that, in my opinion, plays better in the print medium than it would on the screen. The story is complex, and I actually appreciated the reveal and the resolution leaving just as much, if not more, shrouded in mystery as was brought to light. A very well realized Eleventh Doctor here, Matt Smith's voice played clearly in this reader's head. And though I've heard the author suggest that she questions whether she has a handle on Clara Oswald (portrayed by Jenna Coleman in the ongoing television series), I believe she does. Clara is a character that has, I suspect, up to this point, come across better with Coleman interpreting her via her performance, than on the page. If the reader is familiar with the character, she will be recognizable, in what we know of her from the television series as well as what we still do not. Even getting inside Clara's head, she still maintains an air of mystery. The story here is vast and intimate at the same time, and navigating it isn't always easy, but well worth it. This readers opinion: One won't finish this book fully understanding what transpired, and one shouldn't. What remains a mystery deals with knowledge that shouldn't necessarily be known, because the knowing can have devastating consequences for the one who comes to know it. There are some nice references here to past, and more recent Doctor Who mythos as well. I enjoyed this greatly, and I hope that this is just the beginning of Colgan's contributions to the world of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who: Into the Nowhere is the eleventh doctor’s turn to be captured in print by the Time Trips series. He and Clara stumble upon a mysterious planet with no name or known history. Not even the TARDIS knows where they are. Not long after they leave the safety of the TARDIS, they realize that the world might not want its secrets uncovered and it seems as if the elements themselves turn against the Doctor and his companion.

The Doctor and Clara encounter a dizzying number of obstacles from the get-go in this fast-paced mystery. At times there was so much being thrown at them that it seemed chaotic, in a nail biting and enjoyable sense. For instance, at one point they escape a moving forest closing in on them, run into a conflagration of sorts, jump through it and almost fall off a cliff with a valley full of huge maggots beneath and an animated skeleton on the other side. Then they get attacked by a giant snake, all without catching their breath. Whatever forces exist on this planet, mean business.

All the authors that write for this series have done an exceptional job at writing their characters into some original and entertaining circumstances. The same can certainly be said for Jenny Colgan in this story. What has consistently amazed me with every installment in this series, is the way the authors are able to replicate the mannerisms and details from the characters we know and love from the television show, and make them believable. The eleventh doctor is full of quirk and insanity, energy and goofiness. Jenny has done Matt Smith proud with her installment, just as she has done a service for Whovians by creating this wonderfully diverting short story. Clara seemed to be a bit angrier than usual, and maybe a tad whiney at times but such is the lot for a Doctor Who companion. I didn't feel that her character was as believable as the Doctor for most of the story but that doesn't hurt things too badly.

As long as you don’t expect to have all the answers by the end, you won’t be disappointed by Into the Nowhere. It’s funny and action packed and it’s chocked full of timey-wimey adventure that any fan would enjoy. In looking back, the fact that there were still questions at the end didn’t detract from my over-all enjoyment of the story. The missing pieces add to the story and I hope one day to read (or possibly see) more from this story-line in the future.

The Lost Planet Unmentionable

This was an awesome imagining that really let me feel like the eleventh Doctor and Clara could continue traveling together forever! I know the writer has to be a HUGE fan to be able to wrote the characters so well and come up with a completely new adventure unlike anything ever seen in the actual series :) I really enjoyed it and would love to read more adventures by her with any of the doctor and companions! Really a gem for true Whovians!

A new touch to the old subject

The pages are vivid with the description of the methodologies related to antibody production which will be useful for any new commer in the field. Using the cloning techniques for antibody production will eventually revolutionize the field for it allows tailor making the antibodies to have the best affinity and specificity. This book provides user to help improve old methods and also allows to develop new methods that will lead to fulfilling the requirements to anyone advanced or new to the field.
