Your Spirits Walk Beside Us, by Barbara Dianne Savage

Even before the emergence of the civil rights movement, African American religion and progressive politics were assumed to be inextricably intertwined. Savage counters this assumption with the story of a highly diversified religious community whose debates over engagement in the struggle for racial equality were as vigorous as they were persistent.

From Publishers Weekly
With the recent controversy over the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, former pastor of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, much attention has been recently paid to the topic of the black church in America. Yet historian Savage shows in her book that "there is no such thing as the 'black church.' " Countering the image of a monolithic institution, Savage instead portrays the theological, economic and social diversity within black churches. Through biographical vignettes, Savage spans the 20th-century black religious experience, focusing on the ever-present question African-Americans asked about the role their churches should play in the politics for racial justice. Savage's greatest contribution is her restoration of black women to a central place in black religious experience. Though women formed the vast majority of those in the pews, most historians have focused on the male ministers who led the congregations. Savage argues for the importance of Mary McLeod Bethune, Nannie Helen Burroughs, and Fannie Lou Hamer, among others. A concluding chapter on Barack Obama and Wright smartly observes how Wright himself downplayed black religious diversity to make his defense of the black church. (Nov.)

The debate about the role and relevance of religion in the social and political lives of African Americans has raged since the days of slavery. Historian Savage focuses on the periodfrom the turn of the twentieth century, a time of tension between science and faith as more and more black Americans sought education and as racial inequalities and exploitation left black Americans as much in need of spiritual succor as ever. As black Americans adjusted to life in urban areas, and to the attendant racial discrimination and segregation, the black church became the only indigenous institution with the stability and influence to effect change within and outside the community, giving rise to the notion of “the black church” despite what was actually a great diversity of religious institutions. Savage focuses on diverse figures from the early 1900s through the current day, including Marcus Garvey, sociologist W. E. B. DuBois, and activist Marian Wright Edelman. She exploreschanges in how religion has beenviewed and how it has been used as a political and social engine as much as for spiritual uplift. --Vanessa Bush

Review
Today when black religious leadership and ideas have been thrust into the race for the American presidency, Barbara Savage helps to sift through the myriad and longstanding debates over black religion and politics. In this powerfully written and compelling book, Savage brings profound clarity to the institution that remains at the center of black spiritual and community life. (Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, author of Righteous Discontent: The Women's Movement in the Black Baptist Church)

Savage recounts the circuitous journey along which black religious sentiment and political ideology have conflicted, converged, and sometimes melded throughout the 20th century. She presents this sociohistorical study chiefly through an engaging series of portraits of individuals who combined African American religious and political sensibilities in innovative ways, including W.E.B. DuBois, Carter Woodson, Benjamin Mays, E. Franklin Frazier, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Nannie Helen Burroughs. (Dann Wigner Library Journal 2008-11-01)

Your Spirits Walk Beside Us marks the beginning of a new history of African American religion, not as a sacred narrative, but as the exciting story of a powerful but ambivalent Christian legacy in African American life. Savage has brilliantly rethought a matter of broad and urgent contemporary significance -- the enduring dilemmas and ambiguities of the African American religious experience amid the demands of modern American political life. (Robert A. Orsi, author of Thank You, Saint Jude: Women's Devotion to the Patron Saint of Hopeless Causes)

Savage challenges our thinking about a monolithic 'black church' and encourages us to engage with the full diversity and complexity of black religious institutions. A beautifully written, brilliant, and important book, it is both a profound work of history as well as a timely intervention into contemporary politics. (Farah Jasmine Griffin, author of Who Set You Flowin'? The African-American Migration Narrative)

With this brilliant explication of the relationship between African American religious and political life, Barbara Savage dramatically deepens our understanding of the twentieth-century freedom struggle. Hers is a moving and provocative exploration of faith, doubt, and profound commitment. (Kevin Boyle, author of Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age)

This passionate and incisive analysis of the relationship between twentieth-century black religion and politics reveals the paradoxes as well as the dynamism intrinsic to black church culture. It is a major accomplishment. (Wallace Best, author of Passionately Human, No Less Divine: Religion and Culture in Black Chicago)

Here is a book that couldn't be more topical...[Savage] examines in detail the history and implications of black church development as a political force in America. Her work is readable and thought-provoking, bringing us up to the minute with its brief but telling examination of the relationship between Barack Obama and his own church, and its by-now famous pastor Jeremiah Wright. Overview of important (and overlooked) figures in black religion and religious politics
By Vaughn Booker Jr.
In Your Spirits Walk Beside Us, Professor Savage sets out to discuss the important history of theorizing about the practice of religion in black America while being attentive to critical thinkers and activists in black history whose rhetoric concerned the link between black social progress and the role of religious institutions. Never generalizing about the arguably ambivalent role afforded to black political movements by individual and collective religious institutions within the US, Savage nevertheless makes sure to highlight the neglected roles of intelligent black women in American religious history whose stories are lost when we acknowledge that they were not afforded the usual positions of authority occupied by black men as religious and political leaders. In addition, Savage paints a realistic and refreshing image of diverse thought within African American religion, illuminating not only the reality of diverse religious traditions but also diversity of opinion and theology within black Protestantism--attitudes about (the existence of) God, about non-Christians (namely, the forgotten black Christian fascination with Gandhi), about white religions, and about the efficacy of black pastors and churches in struggles for social equality.

As ultimately revealed in the final chapter, Savage's construction of a black pantheon of sorts for meaningful, critical intellectual thought about black religion in the US serves to provide the reader a better sense of how to locate modern black leaders in a larger historical debate about the relationship between religion, race, and politics with a focus on two such men, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama and Rev. Jeremiah Wright. As the two men might be considered different ideals for the synthesis of a racial consciousness with an effective, meaningful form of black Christianity, the focus of Savage's history relies on those individuals from history who largely represent the most effective presence of black religious liberalism in American history (and rightly so, given that these women and men made and preserved the black institutions responsible for progress). While attention is given to the reality of a conservative, individualistic, affluent tide in black religion evidenced by modern megachurches, I do feel that such conservative positioning and history needs to be given stronger attention in order to highlight for an audience interested in the intersection of religion and politics how race colors differently the simplistic liberal/conservative divide so easily stereotyped in modern political discourse. But the author's best work remains her ability to make sure that any modern discussion about religion, race, and politics is sensitive to the history of gendered divisions within black social history. Perhaps a more robust discussion of the political divides between black women in religious institutions would complicate Savage's important response to the minimization of black women in African American history and religion, but I believe it would have helped to further illuminate reasons for why such progress in black history was made only by a minority within a minority, one composed of a majority of women.

Relentless and Powerful Horror Stories
By cameron-vale
While H. Russell Wakefield is one of the most critically admired masters of the short horror tale, his work has nonetheless been almost completely ignored by publishers since his death in 1964. In the U.S., the only way to sample Wakefield's swiftly paced and terrifying tales is via this now out of print collection of fourteen stories, first published by Academy Chicago in 1978 and reprinted in 1982. (According to the brief but informative introduction by Richard Dalby, the situation in Wakefield's native Britain was even worse...his last book was published there in 1940!) Wakefield's taut and deft style can be reasonably compared to M.R. James, as his stories are often just as richly atmospheric and brooding. However, Wakefield multiplies the terror quotient a fair degree by relentlessly leading up to the kinds of horrific and often cruel endings that James usually avoided. While there are somewhat conventional ghosts in haunted houses ("The Red Lodge" and "Blind Man's Bluff"), Wakefield's supernatural interests ran a little wider than the title of this collection implies. "He Cometh and He Passeth By", arguably Wakefield's most acclaimed tale, is a small masterpiece of black magic terror featuring a particularly fiendish villain. "The Triumph of Death" is an unusually sadistic tale of vengeance. And the Lovecraftian, cosmic horror of "`Look Up There!'" packs a surprisingly potent wallop; this short tale about a man on holiday who becomes obsessed with a vision of something evil in the clouds shows just how frightening and disturbing pure suggestion can be. For the horror connoisseur with an appetite for unusual thrills, this collection is very much worth seeking out.

I love a man who writes a good haunted golf course story
By Jennifer Grey
In the introduction to this collection, editor Richard Dalby quotes M.R. James's reaction to Wakefield's first published anthology of ghost stories, They Return at Evening: "Mr. Wakefield," says the darling, dry Montague, "gives us a mixed bag, from which I would remove one or two that leave a nasty taste. Among the others are some admirable pieces, very inventive." Monty could just have well been referring to this volume, which groups together fourteen of Wakefield's creepy tales ranging chronologically from his first story, "The Red Lodge," to his last, "Death of a Bumblebee."

My introduction to H.R. came courtesy of the H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast, which featured "The Red Lodge" several months ago, and I was intrigued enough by the story to bother to hunt down this collection through interlibrary loan. The effort was certainly not wasted. While there is one confirmed stinker in the bunch (the aforementioned "Bumblebee"), the rest of the tales are at least entertaining, and a couple come close to brilliant ("Blind Man's Bluff"). In all honesty, I will admit that I would feel honor-bound to promote this book sheerly on the basis of it containing the only haunted golf course story it has ever been my pleasure to stumble across. And because Wakefield devotes not one but two stories to taking the piss out of Aleister Crowley, which just kind of makes you want to buy the man a beer.

Wakefield served in the Royal Scots Fusiliers during WWI and lived in London during the Blitz. War pervades his stories, sometimes to great effect, as when it serves to mentally disarrange his narrators just enough to make them susceptible to the supernatural, sometimes to their detriment (Have I mentioned the "Bumblebee"?). Whichever it is, Wakefield tells his tales forthrightly, with none of Lovecraft's adjectival overabundance, and only waxes ever so slightly poetic when discussing mathematics or chess. His tales are far from perfect - there's a tendency to tack awkward explanatory codas onto the end, and the tone toward women will make your eyes roll - but he manages, now and then, to evoke a sincere shiver. Admirable and inventive, indeed.

Powerful stories
By Sarah Sammis
I really enjoyed these ghost stories. The first story, "The Red Cottage" nearly gave me nightmares. Interestingly, some of the descriptions Wakefield uses for his ghosts show up in another ghost story I'm reading, Affinity and I'm enjoying the synchronicity between these two books. The introduction to the story collection says that Wakfield was a contemporary with Lovecraft and it shows in his stories, in the subtle way he turns the oridinary into the extroridinary and ultimately into the horrific. I find that his shorter stories pack more of an emotional punch than his longer ones. His best stories are the ones that stay under twenty pages. The longer ones lose their pacing. He doesn't throw in enough smaller scares in to compell rapid page turning. Nonetheless, stay with the longer stories and enjoy the endings. They all do satisfy at their conclusions.

    Doing Lunch with PowerShell
    By E. Wold
I have only made it about 1/2 the way through this book so far but I have enjoyed spending my lunches learning PowerShell. I find the chapters easy to read an the examples helpful. The labs at the end of the chapters build on what I have learned. I just finished the Review Tasks for Chapters 1-6 in the back of the book these gave me more opportunity to put what I learned in those chapters to work. I do find that it is not uncommon for it to take me more than one lunch to do a chapter. I do like to try out the different commands as I am reading which does slow me down some.

Poetics of Cinema, by David Bordwell

Bringing together twenty-five years of work on what he has called the "historical poetics of cinema," David Bordwell presents an extended analysis of a key question for film studies: how are films made, in particular historical contexts, in order to achieve certain effects? For Bordwell, films are made things, existing within historical contexts, and aim to create determinate effects. Beginning with this central thesis, Bordwell works out a full understanding of how films channel and recast cultural influences for their cinematic purposes. With more than five hundred film stills, Poetics of Cinema is a must-have for any student of cinema.

    Review

"It will come as no surprise to anyone already familiar with Bordwell that these essays exhibit a dazzling command of a wide range of filmmaking styles, fiom Japanese cinema of the Twenties through the Forties (two separate essays) to Hollywood's early usage of Cinemascope to the films of Taiwanese marrial-arts filmmaker King Hu."―Film Comment

"Film Theory, rightly or wrongly, makes most film makers cringe. We rarely see our processes, collaborations, technologies, obsessions, or underlying motivations thoughtfully examined in such writings. David Bordwell's work is radically different. Whether examining Hollywood cinema, Hong Kong, Independent, New Wave, silent or sound, high grossing or unknown, he addresses film with a clear mission -- to understand how a film works, how it's made and why -- and to discuss his findings in a direct style that embraces intellectuals and non-academic readers too. I have learned a great deal from David about film narrative, and in Poetics of Cinema, he carries his mission further, drawing on a lifetime's perspective to lay out some universal truths."

James Mangold, Director of 3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line, and Cop Land

"Is there anyone who writes about the movies with more intelligence, clarity, and style than David Bordwell? With an awesome depth of knowledge, he conveys a deep love of his subject. In Poetics of Cinema Bordwell explains how movies can transcend, inspire, and become sublime. I feel when I read him that he starts where I leave off.."

    Roger Ebert

"A new book by David Bordwell is always an important event and this one is especially welcome. These wide ranging essays are an oasis of grounded analysis in a desert of parched ‘Theory’ and readers will drink deep from wells of insight about form, style and context and, above all, of love and appreciation for film."

Larry Gross, Professor and Director, USC Annenberg School for Communication

"Its title echoing Aristotle and the eponymous 1927 collection of essays by Russian Formalist scholars, Bordwell’s Poetics of Cinema reminds us that cinema is not just a cultural artifact or a market commodity, but is, first and foremost, an art form. If you wish to know what makes cinema different from any other art or wonder what it takes to be an expert on film, Bordwell’s book is the one to read."

    Yuri Tsivian, University of Chicago

"David Bordwell's Poetics of Cinema is a ‘must read’ collection of thirty years of Bordwell's engaging inquiry into, and analysis of, cinema from around the world. Bordwell is thorough, imaginative and, yes, in his own words often ‘mirthful’ in his analysis of every topic he undertakes."

Andrew Horton, University of Oklahoma, author of Writing the Character Centered Screenplay.

"By turns suggestive and conclusive, playful and polemical, wide-ranging and to the point, Poetics of Cinema comingles the keen passion of a cinephile and the precision of a distinguished film scholar. David Bordwell's compellingly choreographed and painstakingly documented essays revisit, extend, and update the rich work of many decades."

    Eric Rentschler, Harvard University

"David Bordwell's work on the poetics of cinema has been foundational for modern cinema studies, dedicated to an intense focus on the processes by which films make meaning and alert our senses. His combination of clarity and insight make him a master of the moving image, a scholar whose knowledge of the range of cinema remains unparalleled and a critic whose polemics are impossible to ignore."

    Tom Gunning, University of Chicago

"This is a wonderfully rich and diverse collection of essays, covering a wide array of topics with David Bordwell’s characteristic rigour and verve. The collection spans just about the whole of Bordwell’s career, making available several important earlier essays; but because he has taken the trouble to substantially revise or update all of the reprinted material, the book conveys a vivid sense of Bordwell’s current thinking. By weaving the past essays into a coherent structure with new work, the book also hints atan intellectual autobiography, showing us the history and development of Bordwell’s concerns. The collection confirms that Bordwell is not only the most significant film scholar of his generation, but one of the most impressive figures in the humanities in general over the past thirty years."

    Murray Smith, University of Kent

"Bordwell’s primary interest, indeed his passion, is the film itself. Throughout his book, he writes with an infectious enthusiasm and demonstrates an encyclopedic knowledge of film, dotting the text with numerous film citations and plot synopses. Film scenes and sequences are analysed shot by shot, with extensive use of frame stills (more than five hundred). He gives close attention to the subtle details of film style, such as camera framings and the choreographed movements of actors. All this exemplifies "rational and empirical enquiry" (3). The truth is out there, he believes, though it is no doubt messy and complicated."

    Daniel Barratt, The Evolutionary Review

    About the Author
David Bordwell, Jacques Ledoux Professor at the University of Wisconsin, is arguably the most influential scholar of film in the United States. The author, with his wife Kristin Thompson, of the standard textbook Film Artand a series of influential studies of directors (Eisenstein, Ozu, Dreyer) as well as periods and styles (Hong Kong cinema, Classical Hollywood cinema, among others), he has also trained a generation of professors of cinema studies, extending his influence throughout the world. His books have been translated into fifteen languages.

A Challenging Work of Film Scholarship
    By Tony Williams
I will begin my review by mentioning the most basic problem with this book, namely it's price that may prevent it obtaining the wider circulation that it deserves. However, as the author has stated on several occasions, writers, especially those of academic texts, usually have no control concerning the prices publishers charge for their works. Hopefully, this collection of new and past essays may be available in a much more accessible form some time in the future but until then many of us must be content by obtaining it via libraries.

Having said this, I will now begin by saying that this collection represents one of the most worthwhile texts of film criticism current today and even those who may disagree with the approach taken will find it challenging and learn much from it - assuming we study it with unbiased perceptions and be ready to debate with its findings. The introductory essay defining historical poetics represents one of the best informed example of a certain type of practical criticism of its type. Among the other excellent essays, those of cinematic construction and vision, cognition and comprehension in MILDRED PIERCE, the three dimensions of film narrative, and the extraordinary investigation of how several classical Hollywood cinematic craft practices informed 1950s cinemascope films are extraourdinary in their lucid presentation of arguments. Vistually all of the essays are informed by frames from scenes within the various films discussed.

Like all of his books, POETICS OF CINEMA is not an easy read. It is demanding but not in the realm of obsurantist film theory of several decades before. Bordwell covers European, Hollywood, Hong Kong and Japanese Cienma in several learned essays in a cogent and disciplined manner based upon the type of logical and reasoned argument very difficult to find in most journals today. Again, I will conclude by saying that despite the different paths we may follow and various disagreements we may have with the methodology, his arguments can not be ignored or avoided. In fact, if we engage with them seriously, we may end up being better makers of meaning than before.

This book is highly recommended to all serious readers whether inside or outside the academy.
