About the Author
William Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873) was a "born" educator. Beginning by teaching his younger brothers and sisters, William McGuffey accepted his first teaching position at 13 in a one-room school with 48 students. After graduating from Washington College and being ordained as a Presbyterian minister, he taught moral philosophy at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for almost ten years. It was during this period that McGuffey wrote and compiled the Readers that made him famous. Later McGuffey rose to the rank of university president, serving Cincinnati College and Ohio University. He spent the final third of his life teaching moral philosophy at the University of Virginia.

Old but Relevant

I'm teaching my girl how to write and read using the McGuffey series. She loves the pictures and she's taken to writing the words in the word lists provided in the books. She started out wondering what we were up to and now she'll open the books on her own and work on her writing. There isn't a better way to teach your child than book, pen and paper.
We're using the primer for the writing work and at night I read her the second and third books in the series.
As these books were written by a Cambridge professor in 1901 you can expect a few references to be a bit outdated but the values and lessons taught are not.
The stories are written very well and speak incredibly well to the intelligence of a young audience challenging their young minds while teaching them valuable lessons about values and even, sometimes, God.
If this were 100 years into the future I would recommend them still.

a few are a little outdated but overall I really like this book

I got this because a neighbor suggested it when he found out I wanted to homeschool my kids. He said this is what was used "back in the day" to teach kids how to recognize words and learn to read and spell. It's a very simple book with lots of repetition. Which I think is really important. There are so pictures next to sight words, a few are a little outdated but overall I really like this book.

About the Author
Michel Gelobter is the founder and chairman of Cooler Inc., a for-profit social venture that helps businesses and consumers reduce greenhouse gas pollution. For over two decades, I worked in startups creating new products. When I retired and had to reflect on how new ventures were built, I realized that there was a more efficient way to use startup money, resources, and time. I developed a process called Customer Development and helped found a movement that embodied its core practices—The Lean Startup. This approach to innovation, along with business model design and agile development, are today transforming business as we have known it.

With this book, Lean Startups for Social Change, Michel Gelobter brings this powerful toolkit to the social sector.

The social sector has to keep up with, and in some cases outpace, changes in private markets to protect the noncommercial values and assets that form the bedrock of all we care about.

This book covers the core practices of the Lean Startup—how experimentation should supplant detailed planning, the critical practice of listening to customers (or “targets” in social-sector speak), and agility—while showing how nonprofit and government organizations can embrace these processes.

Innovation is vital to both the social sector and business, but the two do not operate, and therefore do not innovate, in the 2 Lean Startups for Social Change same way. Solution Selling Fieldbook Could Help Boost Your Sales

The Solution Selling Fieldbook is the perfect compliment to Keith Eades 2004 book, The New Solution Selling. The New Solution Selling is an excellent book destined to become a sales classic. However, in sales, having a great theory doesn't necessarily translate into becoming a great salesperson. The Solution Selling Fieldbook provides tools to effectively implement the sales process and sales strategies discussed in The New Solution Selling. The CD-ROM included in the back of the book makes it easy for the salesperson to personalize all of the worksheets and templates to his or her own territory.

Eades formula for sales success in The New Solution Selling is: Pain x Power x Vision x Value x Control = Sale. The authors of the fieldbook maintain that a successful sales call is a result of effective planning and research. Fortunately, the fieldbook provides all of the tools to effectively plan the sales call.

The fieldbook begins by helping salespeople identify areas of pain in their accounts. As the book points out, "no pain, no change." Discovering the pain is the most important step in the process because it influences everything else that happens in the sales call. The worksheets and examples in the fieldbook help the salesperson identify the "pain" in his or her accounts. An important issue to understand is that pain varies depending upon the key player's job responsibilities. Too often, salespeople focus on one player in the buying center and ignore the others. By providing a systematic format, the fieldbook helps the salesperson make sure that the key players in an account have been identified. While each key player has unique pain areas, the effects of the pain are felt at the company level. The fieldbook helps the salesperson create a pain checklist to illustrate how each key player's pain aggregates at the organizational level.

Of course, planning does no good unless the salesperson is able to talk with the key players in a prospective client's firm. Consequently, the fieldbook moves on to stimulating interest and provides many examples for how to do that in the initial call to a prospect. It also provides letter templates in the event that the initial contact is made by mail. Once contact is established, there is no guarantee that the key player(s) will realize his or her pain. As every good salesperson knows, just because s/he can identify the pain doesn't mean that the prospect willing to do something about it. The fieldbook provides job aids to help the salesperson get the prospect to acknowledge the pain.

Finding and developing the prospect's pain is important so that the salesperson can help create a vision for the solution. Value must be an integral part of this vision. The salesperson needs to lead the sales call with value propositions to stimulate interest. By getting the right kind of information during the sales call, the salesperson can verify and justify the value of the solution. Value justification should be stated in terms of benefits expected (increased profits, increased revenue, or decreased costs). And, as always, The Solution Selling Fieldbook provides templates and exercises to help the salesperson accomplish this difficult task.

In summary, The Solution Selling Fieldbook is an excellent "how to" book for implementing the contents of The New Solution Selling. Salespeople who use this fieldbook diligently should see an increase in overall sales.

Solution Selling is a practical method to increase sales. This little handbook gives a set of tools and templates to apply the method. I couldn't help to think but this is maybe one of too many. No great eureka moments. The style and the language was a bit boring and the whole thing feels like an attempt to sell some consulting work about solution selling.... OK to read but not one of those books I carry with me and go back to over and over again.

Solution Selling is a Key Component

Solution Selling is very effective in defining a model for the tactical part of a sales engagement - meaning, what you discuss with a customer when you call them on the phone and when you meet with them during a sales call. When executed properly, it helps you and your customer develop a shared vision of the tangible benefit your product or service can provide your customer, and it creates clear milestones toward purchase and implementation. The model is rigorous and must be enforced by management and supported by the operations and service portions of your company to be effective. It can help increase the accuracy of forecasting sales revenues. I believe that it is more applicable for developing new markets, for new products and services, than for creating a competitive edge for established commodity offerings. When combined with a good sales strategy model (i.e. Jeff Thull's "Mastering the Complex Sale"), Solution Selling will deliver a lot of value to your sales force. Read the book, but also take the training. There are no shortcuts in achieving effective sales.

About the Author

Professor Richard Baker, PhD, CEng, CSci, is Professor of Clinical Gait analysis, University of Salford.� Richard has spent nearly twenty years delivering or managing clinical gait analysis services. For nine years he was Manager of the Hugh Williamson Gait Analysis Service at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. During this time he served as Founder Director of the NHMRC Centre for Clinical Research Excellence in Gait Analysis. He is the first Professor of Clinical Gait Analysis anywhere in the world and is currently developing a Joint European Masters Degree programme in clinical movement analysis with colleagues in Belgium and the Netherlands.

scholarly masterpiece

This book may not be what the average fan of film musicals is after, but there are plenty of picture books and reference works on the musical for such readers. This is the most significant and wide-ranging study of the musical as a narrative and cinematic form anyone has yet attempted. No other serious work on the musical comes close, and despite another reviewer's complaint about academic writing, Altman's prose is in fact clear and witty -- which is not to say that he doesn't work through some sophisticated ideas: indeed, half of the book is a consideration of the notion of genre itself, with the musical the specific example for the book's deeper investigation. But for all the "serious" thought and research that went into this work, one always senses Altman's enthusiasm about the musical. Academic writing gets a bad rap: this is what academic writing is supposed to do -- explore, expand, and force the reader to grapple with, rather than just accept, ideas.

Brings the study of the musical to another level

Finally, I found in "The American Film Musical" a critic who takes this genre seriously and has worked to understand its intricate and complex layers and patterns. Altman divides his study into three "subgenres" - the fairy tale musical, the show musical, and the folk musical - and demonstrates how most every example of the genre falls into one of these categories to some extent.

As well as being devoted to the musical, Altman also provides a method for genre study in general, which some readers will want to skim or even skip if their only interest is research on the musical. However, to truly understand the workings of the genre it is beneficial to read the whole book, because the musical is surely one of the most complex art forms ever, and Altman does so much to break into the problems that many critics have ignored that it's worth being enlightened as to his process.

The book makes you reconsider all the presuppositions you may have about the film musical and what constitutes a musical. The patterns and workings he reveals, particularly with regard to the dual-focus narrative, are fascinating: instead of just the old "how many songs?" question, Altman uses the criteria of "coupling" to form his theory of what constitues a musical.

A definite YES for anyone searching through the dark for a more modern study of the genre.

I love Altman's categorization of the genre: the show musical, the folk musical, and the fairytale musical. I've cited this text in almost every major research paper I've written in the last two years. Not too verbose, very clear, and a very interesting year. I also love the chart at the back which breaks down all of the Hollywood musicals up until the book's publishing date into these categories.

Great story - Well written - Fantastic character development - Once your hooked you can't let go

If you're looking for teenage sex or a off color book don't waste your time. This series is really two books in one. A story of a young mans adventures as a bicycle racer and a problem with sexual identity. That is not quite correct but I would be letting the cat out of the bag if I said more. The author is prolific and is in the process of writing and releasing book 12 this spring. Maddy also has several other series that are also very entertaining, try them you can't go wrong. She has a web site that's a little clunky but once you figure it out is has a lot a material and information. If you can find it on her site, her personal philosophy is very interesting and very heartening that other people in the world think like you do. And now since she has heat and hot water in her flat maybe we can expect even more from her prolific mind. The address is [...]
