Intro & title story will fascinate esoteric history buffs.

I only read one story, Deadline, because of it's historical significance. It is more of a spy story than science fiction, but well-written in a style that blends the action, exposition, & dialog fluidly, with suspense, making it easy to read straight through quickly, except for the technical part, which you could skim through unless you're interested in it's scientific accuracy. I was interested -- I read the story because of the "urban myth" about the FBI investigating the story and meeting Astounding editor John W. Campbell, which turns out to be completely true, and is elaborated in the introduction to this book.

I highly recommend Deadline & Other Controversial SF Classics to anyone interested in the history of science fiction or interested in more esoteric history of World War II or cold war espionage, as much for the introduction as the story. The other stories are apparently irrelevant to that end, but may be a bonus for SF fans.

The only reason for 1 less than 5 stars: The kindle was published sloppily, with some big spelling & punctuation errors, and no active table of contents to skip to the primary story. But that story and intro are worth 4 stars.

correction

I want to correct the record here -- "lazy reviewer"'s review must refer to a different book, as "Walking Dead" does not have a heroine who is a feminist, but rather a male main character who is a scientist/researcher. It takes place on an imaginery caribbean island and involves moral dilemmas and adventure more than mystery. Well-written, with intriguing circumstances.

Outstanding Mystery and More

Peter Dickinson is my favorite mystery writer, so I'm biased, but this is one of his better mysteries--that's the best I can say because it's tied for first with about 6 others. [The section that follows is revised--an earlier errant version was about The Lively Dead, also a great book, corrected thanks to Pamela Johnson.] Johnson's review is right about the setting and importance of moral dilemmas, but underpresents both the complexity of the novel and the importance of the mystery. The book is almost 'Philip Marlowe meets voodoo Nazism' [but it's much more complex than that]. The main character is a [anomic, essentially soulless] master of scientific rationality--which is also the rationality of detectives, of the mystery form. He enters "another world", most obviously in using voodoo-like magic, but also in dealing with the twisted/demented rationality of his employing Company and especially of the island's dictatorial government and prison system, which feeds his scientific rationality back to him in a form similar to the Nazi concentration camps, so that he rebels against it and reclaims his soul, by making common cause with a group of "magic Marxists" who are also his experimental subjects.
The mystery, of who killed the cleaning woman in his laboratory, is sidelined for most of the book, it's true, but I think the point is that to resolve the situation, he had to escape his initial identity as merely an instrument of his company. Solving the mystery is a rational/scientific task, and he performs it [and might have been able to do so early in the book, especially if he hadn't been carted off to prison.] But he uses the solution to the mystery to bargain for his freedom and better treatment for his group, something he could/would not have done without reclaiming his soul through his experience with the group.
The book is not perfect as a mystery, but the way it develops the science/non-science dilemma is just neat. It does well what Paul Auster tries to do with shaky success. Five stars in my book.

Rebellion and Savagery examines the 1745 rising and its aftermath on an imperial scale.

Charles Edward gained support from the clans of the Scottish Highlands, communities that had long been derided as primitive. In 1745 the Jacobite Highlanders were denigrated both as rebels and as savages, and this double stigma helped provoke and legitimate the violence of the government's anti-Jacobite campaigns. Though the colonies stayed relatively peaceful in 1745, the rising inspired fear of a global conspiracy among Jacobites and other suspect groups, including North America's purported savages.

The defeat of the rising transformed the leader of the army, the Duke of Cumberland, into a popular hero on both sides of the Atlantic. With unprecedented support for the maintenance of peacetime forces, Cumberland deployed new garrisons in the Scottish Highlands and also in the Mediterranean and North America. In all these places his troops were engaged in similar missions: demanding loyalty from all local inhabitants and advancing the cause of British civilization. The recent crisis gave a sense of urgency to their efforts. Confident that "a free people cannot oppress," the leaders of the army became Britain's most powerful and uncompromising imperialists.

Geoffrey Plank argues that the events of 1745 marked a turning point in the fortunes of the British Empire by creating a new political interest in favor of aggressive imperialism, and also by sparking discussion of how the British should promote market-based economic relations in order to integrate indigenous peoples within their empire. The spread of these new political ideas was facilitated by a large-scale migration of people involved in the rising from Britain to the colonies, beginning with hundreds of prisoners seized on the field of battle and continuing in subsequent years to include thousands of men, women and children. Some of the migrants were former Jacobites and others had stood against the insurrection. The event affected all the British domains.

Title and application are somewhat different

I had expected this discussion to assist me in linking those who settled in the colonies with the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Unfortunately this did not occur in the text. The discussion was devoted to the actual uprising with little further discussion of the refugees or the participants. My family members, the Townley's from Lancashire, were extremely active in the rebellion and in the prior challenges to the crown, but this text did not give me the details that I would have enjoyed having. The work is scholarly and expansive. A good reference for those who want to know more about this period in British history.

About the Author
Frank Marra worked at the Staten Island Landfill World Trade Center Recovery Site from September 2001 until February 2002, an experience that served as inspiration for From Landfill to Hallowed Ground: The Largest Crime Scene in America. His law enforcement career included seventeen years with the New York City Police Department and the rank of Detective and then Lieutenant. He was born in Staten Island, New York, and currently resides in Millstone, New Jersey, with his wife Laura and three sons, Anthony, Dominic, and Frank. Maria Bellia Abbate, inspired by Frank's experiences at the Recovery Site, was eager to assist in helping to put all his stories and memories together to create From Landfill to Hallowed Ground. Currently she is a teacher in Staten Island. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Maria lives in Millstone, New Jersey, with her husband Michael and her three children, Alexa, Michael, and Delilah.

A vivid reminder

A well written account of the aftermath and recovery operation following 9/11. Graphic in parts and enlightening on something I was unaware of, it tells the sad personal account of one mans experiences helping search, identify and eventually oversee some of the rubble that remained of the twin towers. I thought this would be a tough emotional read, but it was so factual this for me while very sad was not upsetting. Thank you for sharing your experiences, these memories need to be preserved to remind future generations of the horror of 9/11. I also hope this brought some healing and closure of its own to the authors and will comfort families of the victims.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very informative. I had the opportunity to visit Ground Zero and the Landfill with my brother in law then
Chief Anthony Marra shortly after 9/11. I learned so much more information from the book. My favorite chapter is the Red Cross Nurse. It is an interesting read and I highly recommend it.

just okay

The debris from the collapse of the Twin Towers was barged to the Staten Island Landfill, and Det. Marra was one of those assigned to go through it. In this book he chronicles his experiences sifting through the debris and cataloging the vehicles, some crushed and some intact. The subject is fascinating and humbling but the book fell short of my expectations.

There is a lot of general information but not enough anecdotes. It would have been a much better book if Marra had spoken with more people who also worked the Landfill. The book would benefit from more stories like that of the woman who came to Staten Island with her children to sit in her late husband's car. There aren't enough meaningful passages like that one. The photographs are generic and add nothing.

These seem like paltry quibbles in light of Marra's service to NY and the world, but it's an expensive book for what you get. Thank you, sir, for your service, and for giving us a glimpse of what it was like working the Staten Island Landfill. I would have liked to know a lot more.

Frequent errors mar first print editions

Frequent typographical errors and fundamental gramatical mistakes in the first printing (due to the publisher's failure to edit the manuscript, according to the author) distracted this reader from the book's content at all times. Be sure you receive the second printing. As of February 2004, Amazon was still selling what I assume is the first printing.

The manuscript was not edited prior to publication. I don't know why, but this is Kluwer's policy. The good news is that it is the #1 book in its field, and sold out in 4 months, so the second printing afforded the chance to fix most of the typos. This is my first book, written while in a doctoral program, teaching, and researching/travelling, so your patience is appreciated.
Besides being #1 in English, it is also one of the most widely translated business books ever. It is being published in 12+ overseas editions which are translated and edited for that region. If you speak another language and are interested in logistics elsewhere, you may want to check these out. Douglas Long

Injection moulding is one of the most important methods of manufacturing plastics products. Through the development of sophisticated micro� processor control systems, the modern injection moulding machine is capable of producing precision mouldings with close tolerances in large numbers and with excellent reproducibility. This capability, however, is often limited by the lack of a proper appreciation of mould design. The mould, or tool as it is often called, is at the heart of the injection moulding process. Its basic function is to accept the plastic melt from the injection unit and cool it to the desired shape prior to ejection. It is not, however, simply a matter of the mould having an impression of the shape to be moulded. Many other factors have to be taken into account - for example, the ability to fill the mould impression properly and efficiently without inducing weaknesses in the moulding and the efficient cooling of the moulding in order to maximise production rates without diminishing the quality of the moulding. In addition, the type of mould, gate and runner system, and ejection system which will best meet the needs of a particular job specification have to be determined. In our experience lack of attention to such factors leads to the mould limiting the ability of the injection moulding machine and preventing the process as a whole from achieving its true potential.

Fun & Information-Filled

I found this book a must have for my cruise this spring. It's jam-packed with information, from the depth of water to a complete list of marinas and their amenities. I am surprised that a book that is so packed with critical information could also be so easy to understand and fun. The many photos, maps and stories make this book a pleasure to read. I'm glad I purchased this book a month before my trip. I kept it on my night stand, and by reading a little bit each night, it made for a better vacation. The references throughout the book, like tips for clearing customs, what not to miss, and tourist information listings, alone were worth the price of the book to me. As a novice boater. I also appreciated the chapter on marina etiquette.

Very helpful on my trip up Champlain Canal and Lake

Ths book was very helpful on a several-day trip I made up the Champlain Canal and Lake Champlain. It directed me to a fabulous anchorage I would otherwise likely not have learned about. I'd recommend buying it well in advance of a trip (at least weeks) in order to read and digest the information. This book must be used in conjunction with official navigation charts, and I'd recommend the official New York State Cruising Guide to the Canal System.

Chris Brown truely has a grasp on what a boater in the Northeast is looking for. I found that the information about the ports of call were particularly helpful for those not familiar with these areas. Highly recommended for those traveling in the Northeast.

Cheryl Hamilton, an author well known for her writing style and award-winning teaching, understands the importance of communication as a lifelong skill. Also the author of COMMUNICATING FOR RESULTS, she has conducted a number of research studies, including one published in the COMMUNITY COLLEGE JOURNAL OF RESEARCH AND PRACTICE. Dr. Hamilton has presented more than 32 papers at professional conventions, including those sponsored by the National Communication Association, Southwest Educational Research Association, Western Communication Association, and Texas Speech Communication Association. She has conducted seminars for groups such as the National Property Management Association, Bell Helicopter Textron, U.S. Postal Department, North Central Regional Police Academy, and LTV Aerospace. A native of Illinois, she received her bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University; her master's degree from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana; and her doctoral degree from the University of North Texas in Denton.

is probably the most useless form of academic material on planet Earth

This book, is probably the most useless form of academic material on planet Earth. The fact that a rain forest was chopped down so that the words "small-group communication: involves a small number of people, usually engaged in face-to-face interaction, actively working together toward a common goal" could be written on the pages is the most horrific use of natural resources ever devised (Hamilton, 262). [yeah check out that APA format so you know its real.] When you are forced to purchase this garbage for your college course (because there is no other reason on the face of the planet that you would need to/or should read this blathering that a grade school english teacher could write in one night with 2 bottles of wine in her) let me sum up every single chapter for you in one sentence so that you don't blow $80 in your university bookstore... There are a lot of ways to communicate with someone: your words, the way you dress, your body language - make sure that you have basic understanding of social interactions and have some understanding that there are different cultures, and that sometimes the middle finger to someone means "hello, i love you". The end, Cheryl Hamilton i want my money.

Not a hard book to read. Just common sense.

There is a lot of useful information in this book on how to effectively communicate, but honestly, some of the information seemed like common sense for me. I feel cheated in having to take a course on communication for my accounting major, but the class itself wasn't hard.
Topics covered that i remember are:
1) guides to powerpoint
2) how to do well in an interview
3) different types of communication channels (face to face, email, letter, memo, etc...)
4) cultural differences: western vs eastern, individualistic vs collectivist...
5) conflict management - how to deal with conflicts in the workplace (harassment, bullying...)
6) and others...
